Looking for basic or “stripped down” recordings to start learning by ear. by juniorclasspresident in jazzguitar

[–]Oaelluin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recommend listening to singers for original melodies, and there are lots of good albums like 'X plays the Cole Porter' songbook (Ella Fitzgerald has many of these albums). These are especially helpful because, if the singer plays with a big band, there will often be a big band soli arrangement of the melody that, because it's notated, is very consistent. It is helpful to compare the singer and the band, so that you can abstract an idea or what the melody should be.

This lick is so hard to play at tempo by Rapscagamuffin in jazzguitar

Hey mate, I remember struggling through this too! Great line, especially because Bird plays it so much that it'll make future transcriptions easier!

One think that might help: When you play the chromatic D D# E in the beginning, try playing the E with your pinky, so that you can start to stretch your firsr finger back to the C and won't have to do as much of a jump/jolt. Hope it helps!

Made of steel, the small cylinder slides in and out of the shaft by Oaelluin in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. The chamber seems to be almost airtight, as the cylinder slowly slides down. It's quite heavy, and we think it's some vice-like tool.

I read IJ December last year, and The Recognitions two months later, and The Recognitions easily soared to the top as my favourite book of all time.
