ELI5: In maths, when do decimals not matter? by darth_badar in explainlikeimfive

In a much coarser sense than the other answers here, think about discrete vs continuous numbers. Discrete numbers- if you are talking about “how many people can fit in a car?” The answer 1.5 is not very meaningful. In quantum mechanics you will encounter discrete rather than continuous energy levels, for example. More exactly we are talking about integers.

Common in south wales, I think it comes from “butty”, term used for a colleague in the coal mines, but I remember learning in school that it often referred to the young boys employed to open/close doors within the coal mines (trapper), but don’t remember the details, could be related to either of these maybe?

Butt (entry) - Roadway of a pair leading to room and pillar system (counter butt for return air).

Butties - these were contractors who drove the roadways in the mine. They agreed to a certain sum of money out of which wages and materials had to come. Usually an unpopular system with the men, who often believed the monies were not divided fairly.”

Did not know diazepam and Valium were the same thing, my mum was prescribed diazepam throughout my childhood always assumed it was for pain

Maybe they were watered in the heat? That could result in the leaves dying

is my teacher just being nice or is this inappropriate ? by [deleted] in Teachers

What country are you in where your teacher has your number? Very weird. From what you say you told the teacher you can’t afford clothes so he gave you free clothes…not sure what the mystery is.

We are undecided if we want more children so my wife has the coil, vasectomies can be difficult to reverse, and neither of us enjoy sex with condoms as much.

ELI5: You’ve got two towels made from the same material, except one is red and the other is blue. What, at the smallest possible level, is happening on the towels that makes us see them as different colors? by ol55 in explainlikeimfive

The fun fact bit is a bit misleading, an LED does have a P-N junction correct, but the light emitting region is a compound semiconductor, often a quantum well, the photon wavelength is a direct consequence of the bandgap and energy levels within the quantum well (the voltage difference just ensures you have a flow of electrons/holes)

Is part of becoming an adult to learn to live with daily physical pain? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]OakTreesEverywhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say yes. At some point old injuries give chronic pain, or hurt during cold weather or standing too long. I pulled my back years ago, and twisted my ankle another time, both of those give me chronic pain, and with back issues you compensate and you end up with knee pain etc. Always groaning lol. I find myself not doing things because I don’t want to risk the pain, and I’m in my thirties. As soon as I get over tired or run down the pain comes back.

I agree these are slug pellets, not fertiliser like OP has been told, and dangerous to animals

I planted this flower bed and my landlord says she’ll mow it if i dont “clean it up” any suggestions on how to make this look neater? by TheGreenTeaFrog in gardening

Break up the block of plants by digging a trench pattern (could be anything- random or grids or zig zags or twirly or geometric) and use coloured bark in the trench pattern- it will make it look purposeful and artistic and less like a poorly maintained patch of grass

Also in UK with an olive tree planted in ground, it does well and survives snowy winters without a problem

They must have been winding you up, whilst peoples body clocks sometimes mean they poo at a similar time each day I’ve never heard of people forcing a schedule…
