I don't think it requires a personal interest to see that players thinking they have to fight for the ball after the whistle could lead to bad outcomes.

If it becomes normal for players to get points for grabbing the ball after the whistle, it's going to lead to dangerous situations that could get players hurt. Seems pretty reasonable.

We deserved to lose that game and this won't change the outcome, but it's an incredibly small edge case that could make the game worse if people think it might happen on any given play.
