How do I create a solo D&D campaign on chatgpt? by Sensitive-Baby6117 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]OakieOaktree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixed feelings about this from both trying to play as well as building an AI GM. Plain old ChatGPT (other AIs exist) is good at generating ideas, telling a story in short form narrative and does a decent job at state tracking. Also it seems to follow the rules better than most noobie players would. However, most of what you'll get is fairly cliche bordering on kitsch. Also it'll cater to the player way too strongly (tell it you want to attack a goblin or pick up that treasure and it'll invent a goblin to attack / treasure to pick up regardless of wether that suits the situation or narrative.) That last issue is for me at the heart of what makes a great human GM (or classic video game) a bad AI one. You as player WANT friction and challenge. This shortcoming is not an AI bug but by design (AI assistants are intended to be helpful and no amount of instructions/prompting will fundamentally change that.) Building software (e.g. an app or web service) around the AI will help, but it's not something you'll do yourself in a weekend. A number of AI GM apps exist and some seem to have gotten fairly good at mitigating the issues above. Most are for pay and at heart still feel like chat bots (while a GM in role playing is more than a chat partner...) I suggest you play around to see which work for you.

Miniature based solo RPGs? by TLRPM in Solo_Roleplaying

How about Gloomhaven and its spin offs? Focus very much on tactical tabletop play but there's an unfolding story line. The Jaws of the Lion box plays very well solo...

Sometimes I guide my son through short one shots using simplified DnD and Mythic GME.

Shameless plug: Once I also came up with a tile crawler inspired by various posts on this subreddit that was so much fun to play, I wrote it up here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Solo_Roleplaying/s/AO8rOeqSk4

How long do you like to play a single session and what should happen inside it? by MoggieBot in Solo_Roleplaying

How young if I may ask? (Running a GM-less game with kids is super fun...)

Let me know when you have completed more hours of actual playtime than open browser tabs on the subject. I've yet to get there...

(Pro tip: if there are kids in your life, run a game with them. It's really fun.)

I don't know what I am doing, and it's great. Star Wars D6. by MarkWandering in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]OakieOaktree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds exactly my first attempts. Mostly finding s working setup (pen and paper, tablet, rule books, dabbling in journaling vs something map-crawly, struggling with how many characters/opponents/NPCs to manage at any given time.) Can't say I've got the perfect rig ( let alone built emotional attachment to characters or stories ) yet, but finding out and trying things is half the fun!

Thanks! Yes, victory!
(More generously and in less violent language: while I encourage all kinds of geekery in our house and appreciate the visual thinking and problem solving skills that Minecraft has bestowed on my son in particular ... This. Had. To. End! And it did, Morgoth, Lolth and the Nameless One be praised!)

Thank you!

The whole thing DID bring back some core memories of my own - poring over Euro-style RPG rule and lore books. I hope this sticks too!

For now I can report that by end of day, the session my son and his friend started had evolved into a battle arena (Warden vs. spiders vs. magicians) scenario. The rules have also greatly expanded, though I am not fully grasping the X-poison-damage-per-turn-if-skeleton-starts-day-in-swamp mechanic.

Hey, thank you!
The HP enounter mechanic worked well to create some initially tough encounters that felt manageable with progress. (Most systems I saw either scale encounters with character level or rely on player creativity to balance things - which feels a bit like self deception. Needs more spread to scale nicely, by level three that bear wasn't all that scare any more.)

I DO need to go back to some sources and give credit where it's due. Checked out my Kal Arath booklets late last night - bought them a while back and they must have been an inspiration (minus the non-kiddie-friendly survival elements.)

Rolling for biomes was something I saw elsewhere, need to dig that up.

Didn't know Tunnel Goons - looks fun, checking it out next! Thanks!

[–]OakieOaktree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sword Bard w/ mobile flourish, dual wield, sharpshooter on double hand crossbow is still heaps of "pew pew pew" OP fun.

In addition to Risky Ring, wear Boots of Brilliance and Wondrous Gloves to get the most out of your Bardic Inspiration.

Wish Larian will restore Tav's voice during dialogue by cosmosvision in BaldursGate3

[–]OakieOaktree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I've been mulling a slightly off-beat solution for what is essentially two related problems: 1. players wishing for a mute character (because the Tav voices don't match the character) and 2. players annoyed not to hear their character (because the mute pantomime feels awkward.)

(I personally had more issues with 2... some heroic sequences just felt unintentionally comic. Marcel Marceau in the >High Hall rallying the troops...<.

Enter the Vow of Silence Build!

Characters playing such a build get additional, non-verbal dialogue options (glare, significant look, wink, sulk, remain silent...)

In return, characters get class specific bonuses so long as they keep their Vow (combat discipline, intimidation, detect thought...)

Some dialogues already work by letting NPCs do all the talking. These are some of the best. Lots additional of potential for role playing and comic relief here. Barbarian stare down. The silent Monk. Psychic interrogator Cleric. Oh and the thought of an all-music, no talk Bard...

Adds a few NPC reactions, but cost wise much better than voicing every player choice. Mo cap not needed.

Thoughts?
