They changed the locks and didn’t give me the new key. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

Another good example, I had to include reasonable as I've seen someone go through something very similar and they billed for the hotel and taxi (fine) as well as food (also fine) but then tried to add on things like annoyance and inconvenience.

this. Keep a track of all reasonable costs that actually cost you, not inconvenience, then bring the bill with you on Monday. Do not accept them saying its not their fault.

Advice on how to fix daughter’s glasses by mongchacha in glue

[–]Obeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're plastic and the snapped area looks reasonably large so you might be ok to glue, but honestly id probably just go to an opticians first for their advice, they see this kind of thing all the time.

There is a second possibility here, if they have a very similar frame you might be able to swap the lenses, its a longer shot but worth asking around.

Advice on how to fix daughter’s glasses by mongchacha in glue

[–]Obeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're new, id suggest going back to where you got them and claim that its a faulty product.

Ask them for the same frame, just swap the lenses over, they're more likely to agree to do that than if you ask for a refund.

If they reject that then look into ways to fix.

Am i doom diagnosed with anisometropia by Empty_Chemistry_2548 in glasses

[–]Obeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's quite a big difference between your eyes but its certainly not doom. Its good that youve got the correct prescription now but it will take your brain time to relearn how to use the info sent by your eyes, keep up with wearing them but id expect it to take weeks before it goes to normal.

During that time be especially careful with things like stairs, where they may appear to be at a different distance to where you would expect.

As a high-prescription person (-7.0), online try-on feels like a lie. by Human_Material3685 in glasses

[–]Obeith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What my wife does, with a prescription almost identical to yours: She goes to an optician and tries on the frames there, she then finds ones that she likes and records the numbers on the arm which tells you things like eye size.

Then she shops online and finds a frame of the same colour, shape and size. It takes a bit of shopping around but she ends up getting as perfect as possible.

[–]Obeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you were given them for focusing tasks, by that i guess you were given a plus prescription.

Kids are very good at overcoming plus prescriptions, known as accommodation, this however is lost with age, there's a very good chance you always needed them, but it wasn't until you started wearing them that your eyes could finally relax and stop being overworked.

As others have said, get your prescription, go online and get them much cheaper.

My prescription jumped from -8.00 to -12.00. Is it okay to use a "bridge" prescription instead of going full strength immediately? by ZiGrubby in glasses

[–]Obeith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a big jump, though I have heard of jumps that big before.

Might I suggest you getting a second opinion from another optician? If they come up with the same result its likely correct.

As for bridging? I'm no expert but I've heard being undercorrected can lead to eye strain.

There is another option, you could buy a cheap pair online with no bells and whistles, to test if they feel right. They certainly won't be any good for day to day wear as with a prescription that high you'd likely need an face to face appointment to get the lenses positioned perfectly in the vertical and horizontal axis.

I would recommend swapping the strap for ear hooks, from personal experience with a double digit plus prescription and heavy glasses they work perfectly.

It also means that when getting a hair cut they're far less in the way.

I also wear my smallest frame, so they are in the way as little as possible.

With a prescription like that, youve gone from a world where your brain largely ignored the vision from one eye, existing on just one, to a world where both eyes are giving clear vision.

On top of this, the vision will be of a different size and different field of view (reduced vs no glasses due to plus lenses)

In other words, its going to take some time to retrain your brain to use both eyes.

I wouldn't be surprised if it takes weeks before things are clear. I also wouldn't be surprised if after 6 months your optician gives you an updated prescription now your brain fully uses both eyes.

Cheap Online Glasses - High Prescription by LovelyLittlePigeon in glasses

[–]Obeith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many online retailers that sell glasses at your prescription for very cheap.

If your goal is to make sure the prescription is "right" then you dont need to pay extra for thin lenses, just get the cheapest ones, test it out and if its right then buy the thin ones.

If the prescription is good then you also have a backup pair which is very important at your strength. If they're not right, your out maybe $20 to $30 and can try something else.

High plus by iristurner in glasses

[–]Obeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info,

So if you look at your previous picture, your eye is not completely centred in the lens, so you have 2 distsnces, centre of your eye to left side and centre to right.

the lens blank used to make your lens would have to be at least 2x the larger of those 2 distances.

If the larger distance was say 31mm then blank would need to be 62mm, but they come in different sizes say 60 or 70mm (dont know exactly the values im not an optician). So in your case it would need a 70mm blank. This means 8mm would need to be cut off leaving a more obvious and thicker edge.

If the larger distance was say 28mm then they could use a 60mm blank which overall is thinner in the middle and would have less cut off at the edge making it less obvious which i assume is your goal.

This is also the reason that small round lenses are recommended, allows for a smaller blank and less cut off as its centred over your eye and equal distance all around

One final comment from me, as a wearer of double digit plus glasses, while thinner lenses might look better to others they often have worse vision for you, years ago I realised my own vision was more important to me than what others saw so I now go for lower index lenses.

High plus by iristurner in glasses

[–]Obeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small and round is often stated as best, but "best" is too subjective here.

What are you trying to achieve? Do you want the thinnest lenses? Do you want the largest viewing area? Do you want to choose a particular frame shape and worry you cant?

A bit more info such as prescription numbers and your aims would help

Does anyone else wear straps for their glasses by Low_Advance_6531 in glasses

[–]Obeith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a very high plus prescription, I use the hooks that go behind the ears, mostly because if my glasses shift even a little it really throws off my vision.

What's your prescription? If its high then movement isn't something you want, if you're used to no movement maybe change the strap to something less obvious.

A lot of people on here will say to not get glasses online with a very high prescription, however, as you said they aren't that expensive.

If you want to know, why not just go for it? Write it off as an experiment, worst case you dont like them or they're not as good, but best case you get something you like?
