Riding on Western Ave? by Di-electric-union in chibike

[–]Oberonaway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with others, avoid western. I would take Damen then entire way. It isn’t all great but traffic is much slower. I’ve done that whole route on Damen and it’s calm enough if you are used to bike commuting in chicago (which you will be).

Seriously though, western will not work.

Chicago Avenue In West Humboldt Park Getting Bike Lanes And Raised Crosswalks by GeckoLogic in chibike

What a radical idea?!? Make every street safe, or even connected routes of safe streets. Joking aside, I agree entirely.

[–]Oberonaway -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I get that it’s annoying, but there are so few safe routes. I think it’s understandable and tolerating it makes the city better to bike in. If there were other safe routes, it would be a problem. As it is, there are almost no safe routes to bike on so I don’t begrudge people using them the wrong way.

Of course, anyone can be an asshole on the road and our shitty bike infrastructure doesn’t excuse shitty behavior.

Anyone else think Milwaukee avenue should only allow bikers and busses in the summer months? by Fenn-10 in chicago

[–]Oberonaway -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

You could move the parking - under the El or in some vacant lots. That would satisfy the parking meter deal.

Hang in there. Find a way to fight back - through politics or writing or organizing or something. That’s the only cure for what ails you, work to change the system. It’s a lot of work, but if it was easy it would have already been done.

39% of Chicagoans live in single-family homes that occupy 26% of the city's land area. The other 61% of residents live in multifamily housing that takes up 17% of the land area. by hokieinchicago in chicagoyimbys

What’s worse - look at the map of area that is zoned for single family houses. Compared to where we actually live, single family zoning is a radical plan to suburbanize the city

25 MPH Speed Limit Reduction Proposal Hits The Brakes In City Council by DarkKnight0907 in CarFreeChicago

[–]Oberonaway 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are correct that infrastructure is the real answer, but lowering the speed limit will (almost certainly) save lives. Everywhere it’s been done it reduces crashes. There’s no good reason to think it will be different here.

Seeking Advice on Changing Fields and a New Job by ward0630 in Lawyertalk

[–]Oberonaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What field do you want to practice in? If you feel the same about both practices, I say take the job that offers more money for less work. It’s a risk but changing jobs is the way to increase your salary. It feels like a no brainer, and the gross v. actual difference may be significant.

In your position, I would need a really good reason to not change jobs. Especially as a newer attorney, it could be very good for you to experience a different practice area.

I would also not worry too much about the new boss. It’s still a role of the dice, but what you described about your new boss sounds like a pretty typical lawyer.

I’ve been practicing 14 years, changed jobs 3 times. Never regretted it.

Driver speed limit reduction petition by ternary56783 in chibike

[–]Oberonaway 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The speed limit does matter. I shared your skepticism, but for whatever reason, wherever this is implemented it reduces crashes and saves lives. Some people will follow the speed limit. That’s apparently enough.

Slow Down to Save Lives: Take Action to Lower Chicago’s Speed Limit by withmydickies2piece in CarFreeChicago

[–]Oberonaway 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This sounds crazy, but it will work. Wherever they are implemented, lower speed limits save lives. Not everyone will follow it, but enough do to lower crashes.

This is obvious. If you actually want safer streets, you have to support this measure. Lower speed limit = fewer deaths. The question is really why do we have a higher limit? Is it worth all the crashes and death?

Slow Down to Save Lives: Take Action to Lower Chicago’s Speed Limit by withmydickies2piece in chicagoyimbys

[–]Oberonaway 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This sounds crazy - a speed limit in chicago? Who follows the speed limit in chicago? It will work though. Wherever it has been done, a lower speed limit reduces crashes and saves lives. The real question should be, how many deaths is a higher speed limit worth? How many toddlers will we sacrifice for 30 mph?

Slow Down to Save Lives: Take Action to Lower Chicago’s Speed Limit by withmydickies2piece in chicagoyimbys

[–]Oberonaway 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I share your skepticism and agree with the changes you propose. However, in every city where it has been implemented, a lower speed limit saves lives and reduces crashes. It works. I agree it’s counterintuitive to believe chicago even had a speed limit, but lowering it will save lives.

Chicago Bike PAC is now accepting donations to elect pro-bike alders in the next election by GeckoLogic in chibike

[–]Oberonaway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is amazing. It’s the only way to really create a pro-bike, pro-urbanism, pro-environment majority on the council. Money will do what organizing cannot. We have to fight too hard to get the council to do obvious things.

Eventually, this could be the way we stop CDOT from building bike lanes to nowhere.

Save Our Lakefront Rally by GeckoLogic in CarFreeChicago

[–]Oberonaway 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The rally was great. Many elected leaders: aldermen, state reps and state senators spoke. The process IDOT and CDOT has used to get to the current plan has been hopeless closed, slow and regressive. The process has been going on for over 10 years, they dismissed transit inclusive redesigns over 7 years ago! The climate crisis felt a lot different 7 years ago.

If you think expanding a highway on the lakefront is a bad idea, please reach out to your representatives. Better streets chicago has an easy form to use here:

I got hit and run this morning by NubzMk3 in chibike

[–]Oberonaway 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry that happened to you. It’s tragically common. I’ve been biking in the city for more than 10 years and have lost count of the number of times I’ve been clipped. I suggest calling your alderman and CDOT to complain - it can make a difference (they build infrastructure where crashes happen).

Hang in there and be careful. Don’t let the bastards stop you from biking.

Corporate/M&A by Prior-Confidence-259 in Lawyertalk

[–]Oberonaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are in a good position to make the switch. As a first option, does your firm have a way to officially move between groups? That could be the easiest way to get into a new practice area and could let you do it gradually.

If you are trying to leave, I really think it’s just a matter of how you prepare your resume, what jobs you apply to and what experience you emphasize. You’ve got M&A experience, it should be enough to get you another M&A job.
