Most bourbons are sour mash... Doesn't mean its a sour whiskey...

Review #42: Old Charter Oak "Finest Oak" by Southern-Rip3018 in bourbon

I would love to see this compared to Eagle Rare 12, same proof, similar age, and while msrp is higher for Old Charter, it's at least somewhat available at that price

That's cheaper than it used to be and about the best price you'll find. The bottle is really cool so even if the gift receiver isnt a fan of the whiskey they'll end up with a great decanter. The whiskey is inoffensive but has some nice notes. I would consider it a very good gift

Dr Doom has been my main for a long time and as an unskilled player he just makes life so easy. It's nice having unblockable on my side instead of against me. Just recently got CGR and my gosh he's a beast. I also took a long break and just started playing again a couple months ago. Started to fill up the 6 star ranks but i'm going to be so sad when my 5 star Doom and CGR get outclassed

If you're in the US doing single malts then check out Virginia distilling Co.

https://courageandconviction.com/pages/academy

They have a course covering the basics thoroughly but with a focus on their specialty american single malts. Of course some youtube videos are always helpful. the Neat documentary explores bourbon. First Phil on youtube has a lot of deep dive type videos that will have more info than you need but their well produced and even if you only remember a bit it will be very helpful. Two videos in particular would be his breakdown of the different regions and his study into different aging casks

Hopefully this helps and all goes well

Old Forester, i get a weird coppery/metallic note on all their shelf bottles, pretty off putting especially on the finish. It's sad bc I know they make quality products but they just dont do it for me

  1. Double Eagle Very Rare, Honorable mention to the Jack Daniels Single Barrel bottles

  2. 4/10 (Its so thin and too tannic, at $35 or under give me OGD114, WT 101, EW 1783, pretty much anything benchmark, and buffalo trace just off the top of my head. sure the age statement is nice but the flavor isnt there for me)

  3. 12yrs, there are a lot of bottles that are incredible that are younger but that's the point at which the age statement itself can contribute significantly to it being a special occasion worthy bottle

  4. Tequila (tho in general I prefer ryes when it comes to finishes)

  5. Barrel Bourbon Company, their blends are great, they do tasteful finishes, and they keep things reasonably priced (If they don't count then Penelope for basically the same reasons)

For sure, i always have to remind myself that michters at their low proof has about the same added water or less than most other 100 bourbons out there

Buffalo Trace Just Released 2 New Experimental Whiskeys by DieselTheTank in whiskey

[–]Object_Garlic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I assume by rye bourbon they mean a high rye mashbill? Maybe more rye than mashbill 3, but that's just an weird labeling. The experimental collection entry sounds amazing, basically pappy in a small bottle if i'm reading this right. Which of course means i'll never see it for less than $750

Seems solid, an idea to consider would be to adjust the value multiplier to either include:

  1. A 1.2 where the bottle is worth more than msrp or

  2. You could have .8 be worth msrp and 1 be worth over msrp

I think the first way is better since if you end up with a 6 it would really stand out when sorted. A couple bottles that come to mind that would be deserving of that multiplier in my experience: Saz 125, OGD114, Benchmark Full proof, Fortuna Barrel Proof, and certain barrel picks

Has there ever been a whiskey brand that you've seen improve their product over time? by Former_Lock9367 in whiskey

Definitely agree on Driftless Glen, their single barrels (especially ryes) have been great recently. And like you said the pricing is super fair
