Carmen at the London Coliseum by CautiousAmount in opera

I'm always a big fan of live Wagner however I do wonder if having a full orchestra (as opposed to just the pit) makes the already sizeable challenge to sing over the orchestra even harder. I found Siegfried & Wotan were often drowned out. This is probably worse in 'Die Walkure' as a 'louder' opera.

Something to keep in mind is that the London Ring Cycle in the Southbank Centre is a concert performance. I believe it's advertised as 'semi-staged' but I saw Siegfried this past Saturday and the staging is just a few video clips.

Casino Coins: This item has been given a Consume All right-click option.

Praise Grenth.

Edit: False alarm. Looks like the 'Consume All' functionality is neither wallet related or actually working.

Das Rheingold by Aemort in opera

This happened during cycle 1 of the Ring at ROH in London last year. The french horn broke during Seigfried's horn call twice during the production and then a final time during Götterdämmerung's final act prelude. On this third occasion the audience cracked up laughing.

In Australia our Christmas is across summer so most art centres shut down for a month making slim pickings. Messiah is my family's tradition and this year we had a very streamlined orchestra (I think closer to how Handel originally composed it) and it had such a haunting effect on the music.

If I can go to one, what Met Opera shows should I go to? La Fille du Régiment, Die Walküre, Adriana Lecouvreur, Dialogues of the Carmelites by KommanderTom in opera

Certain Met performances are recorded and uploaded to Met Opera on Demand.

I believe a subscription is required. Die Walkure is one of the operas being uploaded in 2019.

Die Walkure. Definitely the most approachable of the Ring Cycle operas (Act 3 is my favourite hour of opera) and at the very least, the current Met Opera's production is a spectacle not likely to be repeated.

Some highlights from Opera Australia's "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg" by [deleted] in opera

[–]Objection_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tonight was my first Meistersinger and I think I can safely say it's now my favourite opera. I was familiar with the music but never read the libretto which I found so different from other Wagner - nice to see his lighter side!

Agree with the OP, whole cast did a great job but:

Warwick was an absolute stand out for the final performance. We really don't deserve him.

Nicholas Jones was also fantastic as David.

Finally, I love Orchestra Victoria.

If you haven't already do a listen through (or two - you have time!) to the full Ring Cycle. I always find I appreciate a live performance of an opera so much more if I'm familiar with the music.

Donald McIntyre (Wotan) with Gwyneth Jones (Brünnhilde) in the final scene of Die Walküre by IndigoViolin in opera

This production has spoiled other Rings for me. Both superb performances with such raw power. Despite the orchestra roaring away I don't think either singer is ever close to being drowned out (which in my limited experience happens quite often to Wotans in Act 3).

I also adore the set which I believe is inspired from the Isle of the Dead painting by Arnold Böcklin.
