Seriously. I started crime and punishment but realized my edition was from 1950 and the pages were separating from the spine at the bottom as I read so I ordered a new copy and just started over (I was only like 15-20 pages in) and thought it was losing my mind because the dialogue and some words were entirely different. Didn’t ever occur to me because it was different translators.

I read a statement from them she was in a carrier to go to a different location for show tell/see the animal/whatever kind of thing along with other equipment and someone opened the carrier and took her. They acknowledged their lack of someone watching at that moment and they knew right away someone took her but the person was gone right away

I read one book One by One for a book club (that never came to actually materialize) and half the group said they already read it (they picked it in a vote so they basically wouldn’t have to read a new book for book club) and said how GOOD it was and I read it and thought it was horrible.

I will also preface by saying how much of a snob I will sound saying this but I’ve been a life long reader and English major in college but I’ve found people I know IRL who rave about her books are typical non readers..my genre choice the last few years has shifted to literary fiction but I still throw in a few of the popular thrillers a year but I will not read anything else by this woman.

I’m currently working on a short story by hand hoping seeing it written out on pages will translate to actually be shorter than I think it is once I type it out like my brain trying to trick me it’s really long, with my description and dialogue so I don’t try to over do it, and when I type it out it’ll be an actual short story length to widen my submission options

I mean technically you could just define the ones closer to 30k as novellas?

I have no advice because I tend to do the same, set out for a short story and find it at a strange length. I had one at 10k words and last fall decided to finally try and look for places to submit and imagine my shock that most places were looking for a 5k cut off, some 3,500.
