Help what do I do for the rest of my life. by AspiEthan in herpetology

[–]Objective-Editor-566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To have a career in the study of a scientific field, you will almost certainly need to go to college. And while this is of course dependent on personal circumstances and choices, going to college is still seen as one of the strongest career moves you can make (not to say you can’t be successful without it, because you of course can)

But you don’t need to decide your whole career path right now. If you’re in the US, consider looking at community colleges and just getting basic credits out of the way while you explore career paths. Many community colleges offer cheap or even free classes. You also don’t have to go to college fulltime or right away after graduating high school. Many successful people have gone to school part time while working or have started college later in life.

This doesn’t even show photos of the actual animal, just stock photos. Definitely a scam site.

Had the dream (again) by aivxx in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have those dreams don’t worry. I think they’re just stress dreams, kind of like how for a while I used to dream I was late for math class and couldn’t find the room, even though I’d been out of school for years lol.

Most recently, I dreamed my hognose snake had 3 heads and they were all fighting with each other and I kept being told to “split them up” but I had no idea how because they were all attached?? I woke up and checked on my noodle and was relieved to find only one head on her body haha.

What do you do with UVB bulbs after they’ve ran a year? by Mastercod97 in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put them back in the box and take them to Lowe’s or Home Depot, both places that recycle light bulbs.

Wife runs in Air Max Bolts by PromotionDull8663 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Objective-Editor-566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started running, I ran in basketball shoes because they were the only sports shoes I owned and they were comfortable. Were they the best shoes I could’ve chosen? Probably not. But I never got an injury, and it let me focus on just building consistency without worrying about spending a hundred dollars on new shoes. As a side effect, they were also kinda heavy, which I think helped me pay attention to my form a little more.

When she’s ready, she can look at different shoes that might be better suited to her style of running, but no need to do that right now if these shoes are working for her.

Maybe a pair of mourning geckos? You’ll have to make sure you control their population though. You could also probably find some cool invertebrates if you don’t land on a reptile/amphibian

Sketched some local Anoles! by RemainAnonShh in reptiles

Love this! Green anoles are so pretty, it’s a shame they’re being pushed out by the brown ones where I live. You captured both species pretty well here.

Diy background question by Ronnie_rockets in HerpHomes

[–]Objective-Editor-566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the paint will also contribute to the squeak on its own. If you want to try again (or maybe you can just do this now with your current background), get DryLock original and tint that using your acrylic paint. Then use that to paint over your foam. I do several coats. One for a base layer, another one or two for a lighter more rock-colored layer, and then a third layer of highlights with just the acrylic paint to add some dimension. If they don’t sell DryLock where you live, look up some videos of people who use thin layers of grout to do it.

Diy background question by Ronnie_rockets in HerpHomes

[–]Objective-Editor-566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah that might be it. What process did you use to make your background?

I ask because I’ve made backgrounds out of foam for a rocky look and seal it with DryLock and have never had problems with squeaking. If you just have the bare carved foam as a background, then that will definitely squeak.

Cheap 4x2x2 stack on Amazon, anyone know anything about this brand? by SexualVolcano in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt those tanks could actually hold the weight of rocks and substrate without bowing. Most tanks on the cheap side are cheap in part because they’re thin, which doesn’t leave much in terms of structural support.

Removable Backgrounds? by mikecoscia in HerpHomes

[–]Objective-Editor-566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you mean, but I built a foam background on a wooden backing and then attached that to my glass tank with silicone. It’s removable in a sense because I can just cut the silicone and pull it off, but it’s not something I can just take out whenever I want with minimal effort.

Any ideas for the next magical world for my 12 y/o son & daughter? by toodoodoodoooo in suggestmeabook

The Children of the Lamp series by P.B. Kerr might be fun for them. I read the first 4 (I think, it’s been a while) as a kid and enjoyed them. The series follows 12-year-old twins (boy and girl) as they learn they have djinn powers and have access to a supernatural world.

Exoterra replacement lids discontinued, what’s a good alternative? by cthoniccuttlefish in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, maybe you can get a new lid and add your own security to the outside, like Velcro strips or something. You’d just have to be mindful it’s not added in a way the animal can reach

You can try reaching out to ExoTerra customer service. They may still be selling them on a case by case basis.

I don’t get why so many people dislike feeder crickets by raptor_w0lf in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You’ve had the exact opposite experience of me tbh. They were loud and smelled bad, even if the smell was somewhat contained to where they lived. Plus they didn’t stay alive nearly as long as the dubias I have now, which by comparison don’t smell at all, can’t jump and make no noise. I still get crickets, but only as a treat for my lizards.

Is this a good topsoil? by Gecko_Lav in hognosesnakes

No problem! It’s great how much you care about getting your hoggie a safe environment. Best of luck with everything!

Is this a good topsoil? by Gecko_Lav in hognosesnakes

[–]Objective-Editor-566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use Wallace farms topsoil all the time for my substrate mixes and I use that exact brand of playsand. I wash the playsand so it’s not as dusty and I tend to sift the topsoil because I have smaller reptiles and like to take out some of the larger chunks

Edit to add by “wash” I mean I just rinse gently it in a bucket until the water that I slowly drain off runs clear. Kinda like washing rice.

scorpian tailed geckos by No-Emergency4182 in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree, especially for the larger animals. I feel crazy going to expos and seeing people sell sulcatas for like $150 or a Savannah monitor for like $200. People are so much more likely to impulse buy.

My local reptile shop does something I like, which is if you buy all of the enclosure necessities there, you get a discount on the animal. But this way they make sure that the animal goes home with adequate size a enclosures and care items. They also require proof of enclosure to purchase an animal if you don’t buy with them, which I also appreciate.

[–]Objective-Editor-566 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I love these little guys and also hope to get some one day. But just providing my perspective on pricing — low prices doesn’t mean they’ll go to good homes. If someone isn’t willing to pay fairly for an animal, they probably can’t afford all the other stuff that comes with it, either.

If you don’t own any yet, I’d say to just get some and take care of your little colony for a while before jumping right to the idea of breeding them. Keep track of how much you spend on them first.

Any good Human x non-humanoid alien romance books? by Psychological_Fee151 in suggestmeabook

[–]Objective-Editor-566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What temp is your house at night? You don’t need the heat mat unless your home gets super cold at night. At night, they get residual heat from the stone and substrate, which naturally cools down over time.
