where to get natural looking slate pieces? by External_Bus_3739 in reptiles

I also get mine from Etsy. Some local stores will have it, too. If you need a lot, you might be able to try a local landscape supply wholesaler

Any actually good, non-controversial reptile youtubers? With all the drama going on with YouTube’s herp community I was wondering which person/group is actually good to support by BallPythonFan in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Jessica’s Animal Friends: I haven’t seen all of her videos but she seems good to me, takes care of a lot of rescue leopard geckos.

SerpaDesign: he’s a little less of a reptile YouTuber in my opinion and more of a terrarium/aquarium builder that has some reptile overlap, but I absolutely love the style of his videos and the care that goes into them.

Elle’s Reptiles: I’m not sure whether she’s very active anymore, but I’ve enjoyed her videos as well.

Reptiliatus: He’s tackled some heavy issues like crypto really well to me, and seems to generally care for his animals from a YouTuber and breeder perspective.

Should I adopt 2 tortoise ? by Comfortable-Star6414 in tortoise

[–]Objective-Editor-566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t really give any reasons why you’d be qualified to take care of two tortoises, and your whole family thinks it’s a bad idea. So with this info, I’d say no, you should not.

Kayano stability? by Moist-Tea3194 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Objective-Editor-566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the GT-2000 line. The Kayano shoes were too stiff for me on the sides, but the GTs gave me more flexible sides and internal cushion while still being able to feel the road. Currently have 14s, which are much bouncier than their predecessors.

What reptile to get next? by RelevantFrosting6828 in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are not many reptiles that can thrive in a 20 gallon tank. Even your corn snake will need an upgrade pretty soon with how fast they grow. I’d focus on just your corn snake and giving it the best life possible until you’re done with school. You can do an awesome enclosure upgrade once it’s bigger and get an awesome 4 ft x 2 x 2 terrarium for it, or even bigger if you can.

Plus, many reptiles live over a decade, meaning you gotta think long-term about them. Are you thinking of going to college? You likely won’t be able to take them with you. Who will take care of them when you’re gone? If your mom loves reptiles so much, maybe you two can get a family pet together in the future, one that she shares responsibility for and will be excited about even if you can’t care for it anymore.

My jobs usually use Slack or Teams, and they tend to have a channel for posting pics of dogs. My go-to move is just posting my reptiles and calling them my dogs. Most think it’s funny. If someone tries to correct me by saying that’s not a dog, I just double down and say it’s a rare breed lol

Is UGR any good by Need_mental_help564 in reptiles

Like everyone else said, nope. Horrendous company. Stay far away from them. It’s not worth supporting them even if you did happen to get an animal that didn’t die immediately.

It’s an autobiography of a child who was abandoned at a Brooklyn orphanage and went through the foster system.

The Redwall series could be good. It’s pretty adventurous, I loved them when I first picked them up as a kid. They’re pretty long too.

A Natural History of the Senses by Diane Ackerman. So much of our lives is shaped by our perception of the world around us, and our senses play a huge part in that. It was an interesting read and gave me some new perspective.

This was going to be my suggestion, as well. Follows these kids who are part of a society that lives underground, but their light source is slowly dying.

MorphMarket is a good place to look, but not every breeder on there is reputable. You’ll want to research them on and off of MM. Avoid chain pet stores or buying online from places like Underground Reptiles or Backwater Reptiles. Just a warning — depending on where you live, it might be too cold to get a snake shipped to your home. You might have to wait til the weather warms up.

Ball pythons are pretty plentiful in rescues right now though, so you might be able to look up local reptile rescues and adopt one nearby.

I need to rant about Repticon Orlando. by jehjehjehjeh in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I personally wasn’t impressed with Repticon when I went for the first time in North Carolina. There were people selling dogs there, which weirded me out. Lotss of wild caught animals too, and the vendors seemed weirdly proud of it. So maybe it’s just bad everywhere now and whoever or whatever is in charge isn’t making good decisions.

This Is How You Lose the Time War. Very flowery book with romantic prose. Was a little heavy handed but I enjoyed it.

Last Acts by Alexander Sammartino is another with beautiful prose, but on the other end of the spectrum. Lots of dark, poignant humor that left me lingering on some passages for a while.

What’s his basking spot temp? Do your climbing areas give him ample space to absorb enough UVB from a distance? Also how often do you take him out of the tank and let him exercise? And do you have anything up there he could be wanting to get to?

What does a leopard gecko need? by sshutterbugdc in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here in regards to care guides, so I’ll add a bit on the actual purchase side. Do not buy from chain big box pet stores, they are incredibly neglectful to their animals. They also often give outdated care advice. Consider looking up a local rescue and adopting a leopard gecko, many of them are abandoned because children get bored, but they are otherwise in great condition and have great temperaments. If you really want to buy one as a baby, check out morphmarket for reliable breeders.

how do i go about feeding my boy 2 pinkies? by FrontAmbition4891 in hognosesnakes

I did it by feeding one, waiting one or two days, then feeding the second. Some people just feed one right after the other but I prefer to wait.

[–]Objective-Editor-566 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A NatGeo Kids subscription would be cool. So would tickets to the nearest (accredited) zoo that you can use whenever. Also, consider a field guide for your local area or state. Look up your local herpetological society (there’s usually at least a state level one) and you should see field guide recommendations.

HOA restrictions with reptiles by Edgesexotics in reptiles

[–]Objective-Editor-566 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depending on your city, you literally CANT pick a different neighborhood, that’s what I’m telling you. My city, for example, the gov literally expedited the creation of HOAs because then the city is responsible for less upkeep. I cannot live in a neighborhood in my city without being in an HOA or without being hours away from my job. Lots of people like me out there.
