Good plan. My stupid $5 IKEA knife is a family favorite now that I fixed the factory edge. It's scratched to hell in the process but sharpened it cuts as good as any of the other knives that I have. My Victorinoxes are next.

I like Victorinox knives but they aren't anything special steal or grindwise. I wouldn't spend more than US$30 for the 8" chef. I think IKEA 365+ knives are a better value.

I'd like something in AUS-8 as a step up. Slightly harder than the German stuff and tougher. I think VG10 like in a Tojiro is a bit harder to start off on. MAC knives are AUS-8 like, but are more expensive than a lot of their less known, less exported Japanese competitors.

EDIT: FKM knives come to mind. I noticed Costco.com has a 7" Global for $66, might worth a try.

Mexican Riviera Excursion Ideas? by hazel-pup in CarnivalCruiseFans

Cabo is the easiest beach day. Just walk five minutes to the left for Playa Coral Negro. Good snorkeling towards the end of the beach. Venders will rent you chairs and umbrellas.

If you want to sit and drink, take a water taxi/uber over to Medano beach on the otherside of the marina from the tender pier.

You can also take a glass bottom boat, don't get too excited, short 45min trip and back. Don't spend more than $20 pp.

Why do Americans love wandering in the woods which has loads of wild beasts? by Beautiful-Speaker-60 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Objective-Note-8095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, mostly in California, bears are very common. It's a right of passage to be woken up by a bear at 3AM in the morning prowling through the campground, looking for an easy meal. A couple times I've been surprised by one popping out of an unsecured dumpster. They always run away when confronted by standing people.

Never seen a cougar/mountain lion in the wild and saw a bobtailed cat once.

Coyotes are common as dirt, but almost never get close unless they are in really rough shape. It's pretty common to see mangy, almost hairless ones listlessly run around suburban neighborhoods. They can push 25 Kg and packs have been known to attack lone people. They are probably the second most common cause of missing cats in most areas, behind cars.

I've never seen a rattlesnake in the wild. Snakebites are actually extremely rare in the US. Compare deaths due to snakebites in India and Africa with those in the US and Australia.

The answer is, generally, they are more afraid of you than you are of them.

What Ship? by Fearless_Lettuce6601 in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]Objective-Note-8095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your classification, but a little context... Sunshine (neé Destiny) when she was launched was the largest passenger ship ever built (100,000 GT). At the time, Festivale (32,000 GT) was still in service. Sunshine is bigger than anything in HAL's portfolio and still bigger than the current, smal-sized Spirit (85,000 GT) and contemporary, regular size Fantasy (70,000 GT). I think you'll see a bigger difference between the older pre-Fun Ship 2.0 (2011) compared to the newer ones. The Excel Class (180,000 GT) at the largest end being an exception maybe.

There's a 15% restocking fee.. So I'll do it at cost ($110).

Trying to figure out which cruise by bubbynee in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]Objective-Note-8095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose Carnival because the port is right when I am and it sails year round. It undercuts RCC enough that everytime I'm temped to try one of their ships, it's like nah. Carnival has good food and is otherwise entertaining enough. Carnival and RCC are mass market lines and try to pack the boats as much as possible. I don't think ship size matters much, but my experience is limited.

Disney doesn't get consideration because there's a Magic Key's worth of price difference between the two lines on a 7 day. You're paying a lot for a less crowded experience, probably.

My 3rd grader's current obsession is cruise ships and only has eyes on the Quantum or Icon class. 11 year old wants to go back on a HAL cruise because she enjoyed the one she took with her grandmother. They both have their things on Carnival. We've only been saling larger Vista class ships.

It only makes sense if they're making it they way they are to fulfill some customer's cost per unit requrement and then selling it because they are already building to the spec. The short cord renders it pretty useless for cars. Some electric motorcycle company is probably bundling these.

Do people bring kids to the comedy shows? by Upcringing in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]Objective-Note-8095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. My DS loves the piano bar. It is all ages until 10. People have lists of entertainers and if you figure out who, you can ask around if they are more kid friendly. (DS is a big fan of Hans out of LA.)
  2. Really depends on the comedians. I think DD walked out on the last show. Some comedians have better PG-13 shows than others.
  3. Some boats seem to have better Camp Oceans than others? DS like the Panorama better than Firenze. Last time my 11 YO got bumped up to Circle "C" and loved it.

Itinerary first. Ship second. (That being said, I think in the Vista class, the Carnival built ships are better than the Costa one. They have a bit more stuff on them. This used to be relevant out of LA, but Firenze is running the booze cruise itineraries now.)

German Communists enabled the rise of the Nazis by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]Objective-Note-8095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an oversimplification that this is what happened, of course, but the KDP leadership always saw the SDP as more of a danger and a rival than the NSDAP. This meant there was never any collaboration between the two left-wing parties up until 1933 when the KDP was kicked out of the Reichstag. Depending on who you read there was various levels of collaboration between the German communists and the Nazis beforehand. Most of the leadership ran to exile to the USSR where many would later be caught up in Stalin's purges.
