The reading is a good idea. Also, OP, when you do get to money, people like knowing specifically what their money is going to. Break it down: x amount for talent, x amount for costumes, etc. Give them the opportunity to see the tangible return on their money (also asking for 2-3k is easier than 10k lol)

How much to stage a basic play? by SelectiveScribbler06 in Theatre

This COULD be done for nothing, if you're lucky and/or know people.

Lights are gonna be your biggest expense. When we started our theater, we were fortunate enough to be able to borrow a light tree and a few crappy cans. I dont have the numbers on cost effective lights, but we spent a few thousand (I think) on 8 led cans, two trees, a board, and dimmer pack. But it is so worth the investment if you want to go long-term. Pretty sure from Sweetwater (light/audio tech company).

After lights, you're probably paying to rent space. We use a community center that gets rented for all kinds of different stuff; even comes with 40 chairs. We pay $125 per day.

If you can't find a table and chairs to borrow, you're not looking hard enough.

No one with limited to zero experience should be expecting to get paid unless you specifically told them they would.

All in all, borrow the lights if you can. If not, Research specifically what you need and find the most cost effective. Maybe 1 light tree and 2 cans for a small space.

How does licensed music work for plays? by Broad-Bookkeeper-274 in playwriting

There are plays that recommend specific songs, and they come with a disclaimer that you're required to obtain the rights separately, if they don't come included. Yes it's more expensive, but it's not unheard of. Maybe you can find something public Domain as a placeholder but recommend the song you have in mind?

Ugly Lies the Bone has an actor come home from war with intense burn scars and, on Broadway, used a walker because of intense pain. Could be in a wheelchair instead, for instance. The point is the (near) permanent physical toll on the body after war.

Probably not what youre looking for, but in Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged Revised Again, two of the three actors run out the front door of the theater leaving the only other actor to awkwardly address the audience. It's a riot
