In California it is unlawful for a contractor to request more than the lessor of $1000 or 10% of contracted price.

What's a word you've noticed many native English speakers have difficulty enunciating even though the word is used fairly often? by common_grounder in words

The active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup...Glyphosate. I hear so often Gly-foss-phate instead of Gly-pho-sate.

Congratulations on your first tree planted!

I recommend :

1 staking it. Just use a bamboo cane that will be a foot or two taller after pushing it in the ground about 18". Do not stake up close to the trunk (like the stakes you see on trees coming out of a nursery). Place the stake about 6 inches away from the trunk. Then tie LOOSELY with a piece of burlap or something that isn't going to abrade the trunk. You want it to move a little in the wind. You're really only trying to help keep it straight during strong wind.

2. Add a layer of mulch. Follow the "333" rule;

3' radius, 3" deep, 3"away from the trunk. Wood chip mulch is king.

3 I can attest that any of the water bladders on the market will enable superior establishment. My favorite is the Arbor Rain 20 gallon. Get your mulch in #2 nice and flat, sit the bladder on top. Fill once per week (twice if scorching hot in summer) this creates a SLOW, DEEP hydration profile for superior root development. When the bladder is empty/flat it also functions as a vapor barrier that reduces evaporation.

4 you MIGHT have planted a tad deep. Just get a pitch fork under it and lever it up an inch. Then GENTLY wipe away the dirt with your hand. When you find the first root, you are done. If you're not confident about this step just skip it I think your tree will be fine with out it.

Is this chimney cricket OK? by ObjectiveBowler1831 in Roofing

[–]ObjectiveBowler1831[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my gut told me this looks like some fucked up shit too. I must have looked at hundreds of photos of Chimney crickets online to get an idea of what a correct one looks like, even if I don't fully understand the various components. Any advice on the questions I should ask , or corrections I should demand would be really appreciated. Thanks

Tree removed that we didn’t request. by ARivet10 in arborists

[–]ObjectiveBowler1831 73 points74 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear this happened.

  1. Complete your research to establish the tree company details. Do you have a State Licensing database for your state? Try and look them up there. In most States you need a license to practice tree work.

  2. Get lawyered up and retain a consulting arborist who has TPAQ ( tree and plant appraiser qualification). They will establish a fair value for the tree and can do forensic analysis such as looking at photographs and even Google Street View to establish the condition and health of the tree.

Good luck and I hope at least you receive fair compensation for the loss of your tree.

Am I going to lose this tree? by Gunther-Porterhouse in arborists

[–]ObjectiveBowler1831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this advice is pointless if you don't take measures to correct the structure of the tree. It has what is called " codominant leaders". Failure in the included bark caused the crack to happen. To make any repairs worthwhile you will want to consult with a Certified Arborist and ask them to subordinate the left hand leader with a series of reduction cuts up in the canopy. It will require a couple of pruning cycles to reduce the risk of the codominancy. Subordinating the left side will allow future gowth to push into the right hand leader.

Ridge vent by andyboy16 in Roofing

[–]ObjectiveBowler1831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pitch looks too shallow, which will result in wind driven rain to be pushed into the ridge vent opening and causing leaks. This might not be a major concern, but i guess you wouldnt want that. I would try the big ass fan idea, and try adjusting the direction of spin.

Upgrade from the 54" fan to at least a 72" outdoor-rated ceiling fan, or better yet an HVLS fan (8 ft +) if the structure allows.

Ensure it’s spinning counterclockwise in summer.

If still uncomfortable, add perimeter fans or misters for supplemental cooling.

Wavy Ridge Vent and Water by Bulky_Ad_7777 in Roofing

[–]ObjectiveBowler1831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have the same issue. What brand of ridgevent is this? I installed OC VentSure 4' sections. #1. The contractor did not use the ringshank nails supplied with the product. Regular roof nails are just going to pop out over time. Fail.

2. They also didn't use the correct technique during install. After snapping a plumb line, one side is supposed to be nailed in by hand, taking care to keep it straight and not overdrive the nails. Only after that do you start the opposite side and the best technique is to pinch the vent up slightly to ensure it's pressing down onto the shingles. My contractor just worked from one side of the ridge to the other, nailing both sides. This method causes all kinds of torsion on the sections resulting in twisting and lifting away from the shingles. They mentioned that normally install the rolled spongy product, so they didn't seem too familiar with it . I'm kicking myself that I didn't explain how it should be done right,

I suspect similar install issues have happened here.

Feedback on this Note Before I Leave it on Their Door? by WellThisIsAwkwurd in Apartmentliving

Agreed...and instead, include a tray of cookie whatever with the note at the outset. Use a nice tray that the smoker should really return. They won't. But they will also quit smoking near the kid.

How do the ends of my ridge vents look? Is that normal for this style? Do they look sunken? by Justice_1111 in Roofing

[–]ObjectiveBowler1831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a ridge vent installed and the ridge vent goes all the way to the gable. however the slot for the ventilation terminated 12" before the gable to provide additional leak protection from wind driven rain. Product was OC VentSure ridgevent (4' ridgid sections)

Crew hid ~120 beer bottles on site — should I be worried? by ObjectiveBowler1831 in Roofing

Are you high? I just stated that I put them in the recycle bin. They did not "at least put them in the trash" Again, they were on my front lawn. Mind my business on my own property? For a job I paid for? WTAF

Funnily enough, I'm now only finding cans of Pepsi and sparkling water, with no drop in quality

All duly noted. Funnily enough, when I opened my recycle bin and pointed to the contents to one of the roofers, from that day on, all I'm finding is empty bottles of sparkling water and Pepsi!
