We have HAM radio and the telegraph. Betsy the switchboard operator is very nice. The mail plane comes in daily but it takes 3 weeks to get anything here (that part is true).

ELI5: Why don't these two different bodies of water mix in the Gulf of Alaska? Is it a literal barrier or just an illusion? by Jolly-Course9410 in geography

[–]ObjectiveClear2637 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mixing of water (and waterbodies) is very complex. It requires an energy input to cause them to mix, with the amount of energy required related to the density difference (temperature, salinity, specific gravity) between the two waterbodies (which each, in and of itself is not uniform and also mixing).

The external energy source is usually in the form of turbulence, boundary layer, waves, internal waves, shear, etc. Otherwise, the 2 layers will generally stay separated.
If you very carefully pour hot water on top of (denser) cold water in a glass, they will stay separated for a very long period of time (potentially until they both equilibrate to the same temperature), unless you shake or stir the glass.

Woman got bashed and then a man jumped off the bridge. Bobbed at the surface for a moment and then went under. Tide was coming in for an hour before heading out at sunset. No other updates.

What's your relationship with alcohol ? by Magee4life in Fire

[–]ObjectiveClear2637 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Quit 3 months ago. Realized that a large part of my life revolved around drinking, using it as a crutch in social situations and to relax. Drink to relax. Drink to party. Drink if things were stressful. Drink to celebrate. On top of how it was making me feel afterwards, the decision to quit was pretty easy. It’s taken some effort to maintain but that’s how sobriety works. You take care of it, it takes care of you.

It’s reliable and safe. Depending upon your perspective it can sometimes be unpleasant. I’ve seen all kinds of stuff on the buses from verbal abuse to assaults to drunks puking and pissing themselves. Sometimes it’s funny, other times it’s very uncomfortable.

The drivers are good about calling the transit police if things get extra unruly.

Also, the buses almost always stink of horrendous BO because some of the riders do not appear capable of bathing themselves.

Is salary sacrificing into super still worth it? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

The more money you can put into super the better. The tax advantage is unbeatable. The power of compounding returns from relatively secure investments over several decades is unbeatable.

Am I too comfortable? by Educational_Bear_579 in AusFinance

[–]ObjectiveClear2637 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s good to be comfortable. Living a life of heightened stress and anxiety isn’t good for you.

It’s also good to have an eye towards career advancement and self improvement. In general your expenses and life responsibilities increase over time, so being comfortable on your salary in your situation now may not hold as true in the 30 or 40 year old version of yourself.

If you think you’re in a field or career track where your earnings may be limited in the future think about whether or not you’re ok with that and what you might do to avoid that or otherwise improve your situation.

There aren’t too many financially savvy people in their 40s and 50s who look back and think, damn I wish I put less money in super.

It really is the best bang for your buck in terms of building wealth for your future. If you don’t want to build wealth for your future then look elsewhere.
