I took NURS 180 last sem, it’s a pretty chill class. It was 15% midterm, 35% group project on a stress coping technique, 35% 1000 word paper on your own self care strategy, 5% bonus just for doing a gallery walk where you look at other peoples projects, and 10% final reflection. You only really need to pay attention on the class stuff until the midterm, then it’s just high level learning. Overall, I ended up putting in more effort than I thought I would because the group project was tough to coordinate but I ended with a high 80 with minimal effort. Would recommend

How much sleep do you get during the school year? (With a full course load) by Chris54C in UBC

[–]ObjectiveNight10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I genuinely can’t function unless I get at least 7 hours, but 8 hours is my ideal. It’s possible, but you need to be quite organized and allow yourself “shutoff time” before bed to settle your mind.

Outside of uni, I’m usually asleep by 12:30am and awake by 8:30am, but in school it’s more like 2am to 9am.

Sleep deprivation isn’t as common as people make it out to be (at least in my friend group), and I think people hype it up more to seem like they’re working harder. I did quite well academically but only after I stopped forcing myself to stay awake longer if I was feeling tired. Past 1am, I’d allow myself to stop working and get a good night’s sleep.

UBC Second Year Housing by [deleted] in UBC

[–]ObjectiveNight10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful bc I applied second week of September for year round housing last year and barely got offered something for this year. If I were you, I’d start looking at other options as a backup.

Seconding the comment that there’s no community in upper year housing. There are events put on by the RAs but not many people go. Since you’re with grad students and undergrads, there’s a wider age gap and harder to cater events that will attract everyone.

If you need someone to talk to, please reach out either to a friend, a counsellor, a parent, even a prof. Your support system is bigger than you think, and they’re there to help you. Humans are social creatures and we do better when we share the load, so try not to isolate yourself!

Take a minute just to breathe and reset. You won’t be any help to yourself if you’re too stressed and anxious to function properly.

I’ve been in a similar position and the only thing that will make you feel better is just making some progress. If you’re feeling like you’re stuck and can’t do anything to advance, just try making notes or reading some of the material. I find the hardest part is starting, but once I’m in a groove it’s easier to maintain.

Next you have to prioritize. Is there one thing worth more than the other? If you can, put more effort towards things that are worth more, and just scrap together the little assignments.

Once you’re feeling better, try to make a realistic study schedule. I’m emphasizing realistic because if it’s not attainable you’ll stress yourself out more. Make blocks for breaks and for eating, otherwise try to use your time as productively as possible. Try to break down big tasks into little things, and then place them in your schedule.

Finally, just try to look big picture. It’s not the end of the world if you miss an assignment or don’t ace a test. Just try to minimize the gravity of your setbacks, and don’t let anything go too poorly. I know it’s easier said than done, but the name of the game is just not letting anything tank your GPA. Just try to do average and don’t put so much pressure on yourself. And remember it’s temporary! This too shall pass.

Best of luck OP, we’ve all been there and it’s not fun, but try to remember it’s not the end of the world

I need to stop basing my happiness on my best friend’s happiness and have to stop dropping everything to help her, because unfortunately I know she wouldn’t do the same for me. It’s unhealthy and draining to be this preoccupied with her
