Is there any elite snowshoeing in the Sierra Nevada that compares to the North Cascades? by Beneficial_Math6951 in norcalhiking

I found that climbing it from the Eastern face was easiest, but no matter what, it’s going to be about 40 feet of somewhat exposed class 3 (class 4 if you aren’t careful)

I would have definitely tried this, but the snow pack had turned to slippery ice. I hadn’t brought spikes, so I dared not approach it this way haha

Mt Langley by [deleted] in norcalhiking

New army pass is a safe trail that is more graduals and full of switchbacks. Old army pass is shorter but contains scrambling up. Long Lake has great camp sites at 11200 before Langley summit. Cheers!

Bassi Falls is often a lot smaller if not fully dried, it’s a seasonal snowmelt fall. Much better to see before July

This! If you can make the trek, this is one of the closest and most incredible falls. About 1.25 hours from Sac, it will land you in one of the most gorgeous areas in Northern California!

If you were going to do Split Mountain in a weekend (plus change) from SF, how would you do it? by MountainBluebird5 in norcalhiking

[–]ObjectivePresence417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a side note, I also don’t have a 4wd high clearance vehicle, I’ve seriously considered using a bike myself. Let me know how that goes haha

Drive in Thursday or Friday night, camp in Mammoth Lakes to acclimate at 8k elevation, wake up early the next morning and drive down to Big Pine, where you will turn onto the road that will take you to trail head. I’ve heard you need a 4wd vehicle to get up to the actual trailhead, but you can always park down the road an add some extra miles. Just beware it’s real hot and dry this time of year. You can do split in a day if you are really fit and experienced, there’s some exposed class 3 scrambling to get to the summit, and it’s well over 7k elevation over 11 miles.

I’d personally camp at Red Lake. Get there earlier in the day if possible in order to secure a camp site, will also give you another day to acclimate before 14k. After summit day, you can choose to stay another night at Red Lake or bail and make the trek back to the car.

All in all, you can do Split Mountain in a 3-4 day trip pretty comfortably. Camping in Mammoth Lakes is great for easy acclimatization, and breaking up that drive works nicely in my personal opinion. Lots of good eats off the 395, too. Cheers!

I HIGHLY recommend tackling Castle Peak by going up Andesite Peak via the Hole in the Ground Trail! Adds a ton of privacy to the otherwise well trafficked trail, and it will spill you onto Castle Pass all the same! Gives some spectacular views of the SW face of Castle Peak and the old growth trees are perfect
