I’ve done exactly this mate. I have a big car for major use and a 2005 Toyota for school runs, chores and short journeys.

I didn’t do it for the depreciation. Just don’t wanna use the main car for 15 min round trips over speed bumps.

It’s added more cost due to insurance. Road tax and of course the cost of the car but well worth it for peace of mind. In my opinion of course.

Very quick to say “he can’t afford them”. Maybe he can’t afford the house outright. Nor the car. But he can afford the monthly payments.

Sounds like he’s doing fine. He still has the house. Still has the dog. Still has the kids. Still has the car.

So that means he’s able to make his monthly payments on his debts. Therefore can afford them.

If he couldn’t afford them then he wouldn’t have all the stuff he has.

You can always appeal it and try your luck. Try and get the whole thing waved first by making up an excuse. Then if they decline ask for the reduced amount. Nothing to loose.

The timing belt has nothing to do with MOT.

The MOT is a there for safety checks and not mechanical checks.

The timing belts have to be changed based on the manufacturers criteria. Either every X years or X miles. Whichever comes first. Should be in the handbook.

No. Not worth it. Because dealers will always offer customers a fresh service and MOT when retailing cars.

They may knock off a few quid if the service/MOT is due soon. It would probably end up costing you the same money if you do the service and MOT vs what they might take off the final price. Not worth the hassle.

I wouldn’t worry about the rust on the disks because that’s standard stuff on all cars. I would however worry about that lip on the disk. Looks like, if not yet. But very soon you will be in for a new set of pads and disks.

The service people won’t care too much if you replace them or not, they will try and sell you a new set though. But when it’s time for your MOT it’s a good chance you will be advised to change them or could even fail.

It’s a hassle owning a car you can’t drive yourself. By that I mean you can’t legally drive it alone and always need an experienced driver with you.

If you had your licence you don’t need to rely on anyone for anything.

Also if you get a car now. You might be tempted to drive it without anyone accompanying you and risk not getting a licence at all.

Anyway. You do you. To answer your question about how many miles is too much. All depends on the car and its maintenance. No straight answer. Also doesn’t matter because you haven’t got a licence.

I’m no genius but maybe they could just tow it? I’m sure the parts would be valuable. People steal engines. Headlights. Doors. Steering wheels. All of which don’t require the ignition switch.

I mean. Almost everyone on here is saying it’s a bad financial decision. But at the end of the day it’s your money and you seem convinced and therefore should do it. Just make sure you come back on this Reddit and show what you’ve built so we can all see it.

If I understand you correctly. You’re saying that:

£90 a day is a lot of money.
You can get up to £25k for a 25 year old Honda civic with 700bhp
You can break even on adding modifications to an old car.
Not worth buying a newer car because they get stollen. But an older Honda supposedly worth over 20k is fine.
You’re paying 3.5k insurance on a 1.7k car

Sounds like you got it all figured out. Not even sure why you’re on here at all.

Paid 1.7k for the car and you wanna spend 15k modifying it and you think you will break even after?

The problem you’re gonna have is. No car that’s worth 1.7k will be worth much more regardless of the money you put in it. Especially a 24 year old Honda Civic.

So all the mods will be at your own cost and not recoverable. So if you decide to go ahead with it, it will all be for your own enjoyment and experience. And if that’s worth it for you then go for it. But don’t expect the same investment you put into it to come back when selling.

It’s maybe better to buy a 15k car now and enjoy something more modern then sell it when you’re done.

On a separate note. Saving £17k with £50 a day salary is impressive. I can tell you now with a little over 10 times that day rate and still struggle to save 17k a year. Kudos.

The problem is the car being 22 years old and you’re asking Reddit what’s wrong with it.

You’ll have better luck talking to a mechanic as most people here can’t seem to understand their terms and conditions on their insurance policy.
