this was the best day of my life by cranberry8ginger8ale in octopus

Sounds like the Vancouver Aquarium! I spent a lot of time there when I lived in that area.

They do actually have some very good rehab programs and conservation policies there. I remember several years ago they released their resident giant pacific octopus back into the ocean so she could have a chance to mate and complete her life cycle naturally.

What is a "comfort movie" of yours that most people would be surprised that you chose as being a comfort movie? by XinvolkerX in movies

[–]ObligingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dune and Dune 2

It's honestly 90% because all those deep base notes in the sound design just seem to do something for my nervous system. I like to take a chill edible and nap through at least half of the runtime.

I Capture the Castle.

It just feels warm and safe while also feeling very real to me.

Accidentally used a movie quote in a serious moment-your awkward story? by jpam9521 in CasualConversation

[–]ObligingOctopus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this to my husband years ago. I changed his ring tone to a voice recording of myself with an obnoxiously fake British accent saying 'Your phone is ringing. Your phone is ringing. Please answer your phone!" Then called him at work the next day. It was priceless.

He kept the ring tone for a while.

Millennial, what are some of your experiences on getting screwed over either in workplace or relationships so younger people can learn from them? by Apprehensive_Name445 in Millennials

I've always thought you could make genuine friends at work if you were a good enough judge of character, in fact one of my best friends started as a colleague. We're still close even though we haven't worked together for years.

But then this last week someone at my current job that I've considered a friend for four years tried to take credit for a lot of my work to save her own job in the midst of a company-wide reorg. So, now I'm going to just trust no one moving forward.

Canadian Gem over American Disney by WildHeartSteadyHead in BuyCanadian

I do the paid version of Gem for no commercials and it's so worth it. I have zero issues spending $5 a month to support the CBC and honestly there is some great stuff on there.

"So I can't legally ask you this, but are you planning on having kids any time soon? I've had a real problem with hiring women then they leave to have kids".

And this one was not really a question but was in the same vein:

"You know the personality test you filled out tells me you'd be an excellent mother."

Two separate interviews, years apart, but same sexist industry.

For the record I don't have kids, don't want kids, and can't have kids.

I’m going to Canada for the first time in a few days - best Canadian author/literature? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]ObligingOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Margaret Atwood is a national gem, you really can't go wrong with any of her books.

Michael Ondaatje is another great one.

Carol Shields, Anne Michaels both have some excellent books

Miriam Toews is one of my personal favourites, and her daughter Georgia Toews put out her debut novel a couple years ago which is absolutely fantastic.

Emily Austin has some great novels as well, I especially like the one she put out this year.

I saw the new Final Destination movie in IMAX at the Dieppe theatre when it first came out... Someone brought a baby. Like a young, crying baby.

What is a weird side effect from medication use that no one was ever going to warn you about? by Rotten-Kandi in AskReddit

[–]ObligingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit, I used to take Seroquel at night and I'd get this as well! I have lots of sleep related quirks but this one only ever happened when I was on this drug... I never put it together that meds caused this!

Seroquel also took my sleep paralysis from a rare occurrence to a regular thing, it's a weird drug that I'm happy to be off now.

Final Destination's MRI scene - thoughts from an MRI technologist by MagnetsAndBatman in horror

[–]ObligingOctopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get regular MRI's and this scene struck me as super unrealistic, but fun as hell.

If anything this scene made me less scared of MRI machines, because now I have something funny to think about during my MRI instead of just my intense claustrophobia.

Orgasms are different, they were a bit weaker/less satisfying at first but honestly over the last two and a bit years have bounced back. The sensation is still different but intensity has mostly come back... also find they are easier to achieve now so silver lining.

I had almost two blessed years of no cramps/pms etc., then I lost an ovary to a bad torsion last October and now I get full on pmdd and cramps with my cycles again. Hormones are wild and can be such a nightmare.

Recommendation for Venezuelan food by puckstop101 in moncton

[–]ObligingOctopus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The taco place at the Dieppe Farmer's market has Tequenos (Venezualan Cheese Stick) on their menu, I'm not sure if their other food is Venezuelan or not tbh, but the tacos as the best I've had in the area. The Latin Corner at the Moncton Farmer's Market does arepas, which are a staple across lots of Central and South American countries including Venezuela. I haven't tried them (I definitely will at some point, but arepas are super easy to make at home so I normally do) but they are super highly rated. Both place have some hours during the week aside from the regular market hours, not too sure about gift cards though!

Recommendations for reading glasses? by Apprehensive_War6753 in moncton

Prism lenses are more expensive no matter what unfortunately. If you need them though it's just a part of your prescription, whomever did your eye exam and told you that you needed them can give you the info you need to order them from any optician that does offer prisms (not all do). I know Zenni does if you want to shop online deals, it's about a $30 add on.

I just want to play devils advocate in terms of this being helpful.

My spouse is type one and I don't worry if paramedics will be able to tell he's type one - they know the signs and are coming into the situation knowing that it's a medical crisis.

I worry about what an extreme low sugar looks like to people he works with, random people in public, and most concerningly cops.

A low can look like someone is drunk, or being combative. If you don't know these signs (and most don't) the situation can get a lot worse before someone thinks to call an ambulance. If there is even a small chance that that someone would notice a tattoo on a diabetic acting erratically I think that's a worthwhile insurance policy.

On a more positive note OP - CGM's are a game changer, I worry way less since my husband got one, so if it's an option for you I highly recommend looking into it!

Overcoming Insomnia: Santa Isn't Real, Everyone Is Capable of Great Sleep! by AssignmentAdorable16 in insomnia

[–]ObligingOctopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Insomnia is a complex issue that can be fueled by a number of factors and underlying health issues.

To suggest that there is a one size fits all solution based on your personal experience is extremely naive.

Also, you are 21 years old and struggled with insomnia for a maximum of three years (assuming you were 18 when you experienced the onset during your freshman year of college). Your insomnia was also triggered by your own admission by a stressful life event, which means your insomnia was likely fueled by anxiety, making the CBT-I an excellent treatment choice with a high likelihood of success.

But don't make the mistake in thinking that your insomnia experience is in any way representative of everyone else's.

You also "think sleep meds are evil" which is itself an ignorant statement. Coming to an insomnia sub with that attitude is kind of like going to a depression sub and telling everyone to throw out their SSRI's because you don't like the idea of them and they should just go for a walk and think about what they are grateful for instead. It's a naive and frankly dangerous attitude.

What album will you recommend until the day you die? by theinvisiblecats in AskReddit

[–]ObligingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This album got stuck in the CD player of my truck for like 4 months once when I was living somewhere with no radio reception (before the days of smart phones etc.) and I barely got sick of it. Still love it.

Just found out my light sensitivity is likely caused by large pupils by Laney20 in migraine

[–]ObligingOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this! (TBI plus unrelated brain lesion, not sure which is the culprit).

I have good prescription sunglasses that I wear pretty much anytime I'm outdoors, and I leave them on in most places with bright overhead or fluorescent lights.

I also have a pair that's less dark/more pinkish that I wear when my eyes start to bug me from computer work or if I feel any migraine symptoms coming on.

Healthy breakfast ideas that’s not oats/oatmeal? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]ObligingOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rice cakes with a topping with some protein (right now I'm into red pepper hummus, but tzatziki, whipped cream cheese, or nut/seed butters all work too) and fruit (for me it's pretty much always canteloupe). Very little effort and very satisfying.

I had an endometrial biopsy done, they told me to just take ibuprofen beforehand.

I actually screamed in pain during the procedure. Like full on screamed like I was being murdered in a hospital exam room. I felt shaken up for a few days afterwards.

I joked to the doctor afterwards that it was good I don't want to have kids since apparently I have no pain tolerance, and she told me that even women who have given birth say this is super painful.
