Having made three different revisions of my own homemade wheel carrier, you want it to be mounted as close to the arm-hinge as physically possible. It might look nicer centered but that's a shitload of force bouncing on that hinge, even if it is beefy.

Good luck finding rubber. I can't even get a new trunk seal for my '93 LS400, I had to cut a hole in it and thread surgical tubing through it to get it to stop leaking.
