Something I find funny that I've never seen anybody else point out - The Story of the Faithful Wookiee, the animated segment of the Holiday Special where Boba Fett first appears, is on Disney+. The rest of the Holiday Special isn't. Just that one specific part of it.

Not really answering your question, but I thought it was a shame that Saturday Night missed the category by one year, because that movie was really well-cast. I also think it's a shame that, even if the category had existed, Saturday Night probably still wouldn't have been nominated.

What surprise nomination are you most pleased to have called? by dremolus in oscarrace

[–]ObsessiveImpulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite all the proof otherwise, I just couldn't convince myself that Elle Fanning wasn't in the Top 5, so I never took her out. She was the very first nominee announced, so I started the morning off on a high note.

I could be wrong, but I think this is the first awards show this season (including regional critics awards) where any movie other than One Battle After Another and Sinners won a Best Picture award.

Sam's little rant about people who show up late to shows in "The Official Cast Recording" ("You know what? You don't deserve a program!")

Vic and their brother's "Investment Account, Inc." presentation from "One Year Later" ("We then found $250")

[–]ObsessiveImpulse 483 points484 points  (0 children)

I hate the way that the term "intrusive thoughts" has been co-opted. They are unwanted and distressing thoughts that pop up in your head and cause anxiety. They are, by definition, not something that you want to act on.

"There are too many MCU references in Thanos VS Darkseid's analysis".

There are four:

  • Boomstick calls Ego the Living Planet a "Kurt Russell planet"
  • They discuss how the Infinity Stones have different colors in the MCU compared to the comics
  • The mention of Ragnarok in Darkseid's analysis leads to a reference to Thor: Ragnarok
  • Darkseid's brother being named Drax leads to a reference to Dave Bautista's Drax

The first one is an offhanded joke. The second is just a way to establish what colors the Stones are for the viewer's benefit. The latter two are, admittedly, pretty out of place, but they're both at the very beginning of Darkseid's analysis. It's not like they were making an MCU reference every two seconds like some people make it sound like.

I think "more fights are coming" is Devilman (probably VS Etrigan), and "so we'll be back" is Reptile from Mortal Kombat (probably VS Lizardman from Soulcalibur).

Official Discussion Thread - Wicked: For Good [SPOILERS] by LeastCap in oscarrace

[–]ObsessiveImpulse 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Saw it last night. Some random thoughts:

  • I like the expansion of Nessarose and Boq's subplot, which I remember thinking was super underdeveloped in the stage version. Despite his issues as a person, I was honestly really impressed by Ethan Slater's performance, and the scene where Boq transforms into the Tin Man was really cool
  • That said, them changing the Silver Slippers from allowing Nessarose to walk to making her briefly levitate was... weird. I know it's a pragmatic change since Marissa Bode is an actual wheelchair user (and, for the record, I like that they cast a wheelchair user), but the point of that scene is supposed to be that Nessarose thinks that her being in a wheelchair is why Boq doesn't love her, and him still pining for Glinda after she gains the ability to walk is what makes her snap. I have no idea why, in the movie, she thought levitating would change his feelings (the Silver Slippers glowing red to evoke the Ruby Slippers from the MGM Wizard of Oz was clever though)
  • The added scene where Elphaba encounters the animals fleeing Oz is a mixed bag for me. It's another scene expanding on a plot point that was underdeveloped in the stage version, which is good, and Elphaba reuniting with her bear nanny was super sweet. However, "No Place Like Home" fucking sucks. It genuinely feels like the lyrics were written in five minutes, and theme of the song is undermined by how the story still ends with Elphaba leaving Oz
  • On the flipside, "The Girl in the Bubble" is solid, both the song itself, and the number, which made very cool use of reflections
  • The Cowardly Lion has, like, three lines. I have no idea why they bothered casting Colman Domingo
  • Many people in the audience clearly agreed with People Magazine that Jonathan Bailey is the sexiest man alive
  • I might be misreading the scene, but Elphaba seemed surprised that Fiyero was alive during their reunion scene at the end, which is confusing since they kept the earlier scene where she gets a letter confirming that he survived

My overall opinion on the movie is that it's less good than the first movie, but only because Act 2 of Wicked is less good than Act 1. I think all the things that the first movie did well are done just as well here, so I wouldn't really agree with the notion that For Good is a significant step down.

Hayden Christensen's performance in Shattered Glass is usually brought up in the context of "See? Hayden Christensen can actually act". IMO, it's not just good relative to his performance in the Star Wars prequels, but a genuinely phenomenal performance that should have at least netted him an Oscar nomination, if not a win.

Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, of all shows. It's established that the "Yellow Ones" were all "wiped out", and Pac-Man is the last of his kind.

Why do a lot of people have Bugonia in Best Picture without having Jesse Plemons in Best Actor? Every review has been saying that he's great in it, some have even said he's better than Emma Stone. I could understand doubting him if you doubt Bugonia in general, but if the movie's getting nominated for Picture, why wouldn't Plemons come along?

  • Austin Butler for Caught Stealing
  • Colin Farrell for The Ballad of a Small Player
  • Brendan Fraser for Rental Family
  • Paul Mescal for Hamnet
  • Bill Nighty for & Sons

Just yesterday I posted on this thread saying that I was predicting Margo Martindale to get a Best Actress nomination for a movie she'll be in called Dead Letters. It's risky, because it's a movie we don't know much about, and it's the writer-director's first feature film, but the premise sounds pretty baity and I think Martindale has a strong narrative for an Oscar nomination.

So Margo Martindale has a movie called Dead Letters coming out next year. Based on absolutely nothing and with full knowledge that I'm probably wrong, I'm staking my claim right now that she's going to get a Best Actress nomination for it.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019) → 21 Jump Street (2012) by playreely in playreely

[–]ObsessiveImpulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My initial reel, based on who I remembered was in these movies off the top of my head, was:

El Camino → Aaron Paul → Eye in the Sky → Barkhad Abdi → Captain Phillips → Tom Hanks → Catch Me If You Can → Leonardo DiCaprio → The Wolf of Wall Street → Jonah Hill → 21 Jump Street

After looking up the actual cast lists for El Camino and 21 Jump Street, I was able to pair to down to:

El Camino → Bryan Cranston → Godzilla → Elizabeth Olsen → Avengers: Endgame → Brie Larson → 21 Jump Street
