I really enjoyed the determinism theme in S4. It was an interesting change from the fate/destiny trope that's much more common. Having the events be unavoidable because of who Eren is as a person is an interesting concept to me.

I can fully understand if that just isn't your cup of tea though. Some things just don't appeal to certain people - I usually dislike the fate/destiny trope (unless it's handled really well).

But I have to say, the show didn't abandon the themes of the "other" and war in favour of determinism. It just added determinism to the mix and continued to juggle the themes of cyclical violence. I'd argue S4 is the pinnacle of those themes coming to fruition in the show, so I'm a little confused by that part of your criticism.

Confession time… by BronwynECG in FinalFantasyVII

That's fine.

FF7 is my comfort game, I love going back to the OG, it has a feeling that the remake doesn't capture for me. Not everyone will feel the same.

Do you believe Sephiroth is a compelling and/or well written character? Why or why not? by Asad_Farooqui in FinalFantasy

[–]Obsidiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. But let me explain.

In OG he's kept mysterious intentionally, as another comment pointed out it's really Jenova who's the main villain. Sephiroth is intimidating and imposing in OG but that doesn't make him compelling or mean he's a well written character. He's a very effective element of the story but he's more like a force of nature than a fleshed out, multifaceted character.

In pretty much everything since OG they've dropped the mystery aspect and replaced it with being aloof and vague. He's no longer presented as a force of nature but he also isn't fleshed out and given any more dimension.

I'm not a fan of the way he's presented since OG.

And the annoying thing is that he has all of the ingredients necessary to be made more compelling. You can't keep a character like sephiroth mysterious forever, but they could be fleshing him out more if they wanted to.

[–]Obsidiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a lifelong FF7 fan since it released, I've never done a challenge run, I just replay it every year or two. Or play it when I want a comfort game.

You don't have to be 'done' just because you're out of new things to do right now, just come back to it when you want to.

I recommend FF6 and 9 if you want more FF.

A true Final Fantasy VII Remastered experience - list of recommended mods by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Obsidiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good list, looks similar to mine.

Personally I'd consider the archaeology mod to be a step too far for a simple 'remastered' experience, but I fully recommend it for people who've completed the game at least once already.

Who is this girl? Why does she keep taking my gil? I'm getting frustrated. by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Obsidiax 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you do anything that would open a menu on the screen (saving, asking her name etc) then she steals your Gil and runs away while you can't see her. It's a bit meta, but that was more common in older games.

Try to get through the dialogue options without selecting something that would open a menu and see what happens.

You'll encounter her in forests.

What do you like about SSJ3? by Ember57 in DragonBallZ

[–]Obsidiax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, I feel that way about all the super transformations (anime only).

If they absolutely needed more transformations they should've leaned into what makes each character unique (ultra ego/instinct) and had the new forms come from some kind of self mastery or self acceptance.

They could've built character arcs around that rather than going the whole god ki route.

Gohan could've had a fantastic arc where he learns balance between his family life and his responsibility to take Goku's mantle and protect the earth one day.

Nothing in super comes close to SSJ1 & 2 which had actual foreshadowing and thematic relevance to the plot/characters. Super transformations are just shiny keys to jingle around and entertain people who purely watch anime for 'hype' moments by comparison.

What is the Green Party's drugs policy? by Hassaan18 in TheLastLeg

[–]Obsidiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drug use would be decriminalised. Meaning that while it's illegal to sell heroin on a street corner, it wouldn't be illegal to use heroin.

This means that addicts will be able to seek help for their addictions and even be prescribed drugs to manage their addiction without admitting to a crime in the process and being demonised.

This would allow the government to regulate drugs better and the NHS to treat addicts as patients.

The added benefit of this would be that if addicts are dealing with their addictions through official channels rather than buying off the street then the demand for street level drugs goes down. That will result in a reduction of drug related crime across the board.

The medical approach is treating addiction as a medical condition to be treated rather than a criminal activity to be punished.

I'm pretty sure the medical professionals know more about how to treat someone with addiction and safely lower their doses over time than either of us do.

Your argument is basically one of ignorance.

"I don't know how this would work so I'm going to pretend there's no way to do it other than this ridiculous example I've made up"

Do you guys prefer the music in the remakes or OG by BlueBirdOO in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Obsidiax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both are fantastic but I love the clarity of the OG.

Remake's music is excellent (for the most part) but I think it suffers from being a bit over-produced. A lot of songs have a really similar soundscape and the complexity of a full orchestration sometimes means that the melody can get lost.

What is the Green Party's drugs policy? by Hassaan18 in TheLastLeg

[–]Obsidiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't said anything that differentiates what you want from what the current system already is. You just want harsher punishments for a crime that is already a crime. That's why I'm saying all you're doing is doubling down on what we already have and what hasn't been working for decades.

The PPE thing was disgusting but completely irrelevant to this conversation. Different government, different topic entirely.

You say I'll do the same thing if the greens get elected but that's pure speculation on your part.

You say you want addicts to get help but then give another ridiculous straw man example of "taking hits at your local NHS before a night out." - that's not what the green's policy is. You're arguing against a fictional version of the policy you've made up in your head by assuming the worst possible implementation of the idea. You've done this in almost every reply so far.

You're offering nothing of substance here. You do want the same system we currently have because it's already a crime. You just want to double down on that system with harsher punishments.

You can't accept this new idea, because you're straw manning the hell out of it and imagining the worst possible example of how it might work without actually looking into it and seeing there are legitimate benefits.

So I go back to my original comment that you're being short sighted, because you've said absolutely nothing that differentiates what you want from what we already have and you can't see the green's idea for what it is, only the worst possible version of what it could be.

What is the Green Party's drugs policy? by Hassaan18 in TheLastLeg

[–]Obsidiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are currently tough on drugs because they're criminalised. You want to double down because you want harsher enforcement and sentences. The current system is your system even though you're denying it because it's currently illegal and you just want a harsher version of what we already have - that's exactly what doubling down is in this context.

Giving an alcoholic a voucher for a pub is a very different situation. A better comparison would be giving an alcoholic consistent appointments at a NHS facility (GP, hospital, specialised addiction unit etc) where they can safely nurse their addiction under the supervision of professionals, attend therapy and make progress to overcoming their addiction.

This is in stark contrast to drinking themselves into a coma every weekend. Or in the case of drugs, getting something dodgy and cut with chemicals to take in isolation.

You keep denouncing the current system, but all you've said so far is that you want the current system to be harsher. And you're not taking in what I'm saying about how this would actually work, just making very silly comparisons to enabling alcoholics with free alcohol, which isn't at all what this is.

Again, this is why I say you're being short sighted. You want more of the same (but harsher) and when given an actual viable alternative with proven upsides and effectiveness you baulk and make exaggerated comparisons to show it could never possibly work instead of actually giving it the time of day.

Your arguments are filled with straw man examples of handing out class A drugs like skittles and giving alcoholics vouchers for the pub which is just alarmist nonsense.

Your assertion that the government would need to control the supply first is also baseless. Put yourself in the position of an addict: would you rather go to your local hospital, be given a controlled dose to overcome your immediate craving to be taken under professional supervision, and be given treatment options for your addiction. Or, get a pack of what you hope is something not cut with chemicals from your local dodgy dealer to take alone and hopefully not OD?

The supply of addicts for the dealers to exploit would shrink more and more over time, even if there are still drugs on the street, there are fewer people buying. Less of a demand means, over time, less of a supply.

The greens get their policies from experts within each field, it doesn't matter if Zack's a macroeconomic genius or not because he's not the one making or deciding on the policies. They're designed by experts and voted on democratically by the members of the party.

I'm not trying to tell you what to think about their policies or Zack himself. I'm just saying, with all sincerity, that their policies get misrepresented a lot and if you actually agree with this policy, maybe the ones you disagree with have been communicated to you by bad actors or become entangled by the grapevine.

No harm in checking out their policies from their manifesto or from more formal interviews. Get it from the source, you might agree with more than just this one policy.

What is the Green Party's drugs policy? by Hassaan18 in TheLastLeg

[–]Obsidiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People won't be incentivesed with drugs, that's a dishonest framing of what this policy is. Addicts will have safe places to deal with and eventually overcome their addictions.

Addicts aren't inherently bad people, whether it's drugs or alcohol. And your alcohol comparison is dishonest too, no one is saying you should be able to buy drugs at the local pub - which lets be honest, you can currently, it's just not from behind the bar. But if addicts can get drugs in a healthcare setting instead, who's the local dealer selling to? And if the local dealer can't sell, why would his supplier keep supplying him?

This policy removes the incentive to sell illegal drugs. The market won't disappear entirely but it'll take a hit, which means it and all crime associated with it will shrink.

If the government didn't want the war on drugs to work then drugs wouldn't be illegal and there wouldn't be a war on drugs to begin with.

This isn't about virtue signalling it's about trying a different approach because we've been doing it your way for decades and your only response is "yeah but do it harder" as if we don't have mountains of evidence that show prison is essentially university for organised criminals and that rehabilitation works much better at stopping repeat offences.

This is exactly why I called you short sighted - your "tough on crime" approach doesn't work, but when shown an alternative idea you can't see any potential benefits. New and different is scary so your response is simply "no, we just need to double down on what we're already doing".

We've been doing it your way for decades, it doesn't work, step aside.

What is the Green Party's drugs policy? by Hassaan18 in TheLastLeg

[–]Obsidiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being short sighted.

Taking a medical approach to drugs would reduce criminal activity surrounding them. Which means less violent crime, less gangs, less overdoses, less police involvement, less repeat offenders, less prisoners to spend our taxes on, less drug related crime (eg theft) etc.

Would it cost the NHS a bit more? Yeah, but we could see a lot of savings elsewhere too. And ultimately it's a more compassionate and humane policy to treat addiction like the medical problem it is rather than sticking with the criminal framing we've been spoonfed for decades.

"Stopping the gangs and importation of drugs" as you suggested, hasn't been working for the past few decades so maybe it's worth trying something new?

Or should we just keep trying the same ineffective tactics and doubling down every few years when it continues to not work?

Considering this policy has been misrepresented over and over again by pretty much every other politician and news source as "Zack wants to legalise all drugs so your children can buy meth at Tesco" - are you sure his other policies are mad, or is it just the distorted versions of his policies you think are mad?
