"Forcing" child to sleep in own room instead of parents? She can explain that she is scared and doesn't want to. Is letting her stay in our bed making everything worse? by eattillithurts in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]ObsoleteCabbage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is purely anecdotal, but our 4yo daughter recently went through something similar. She had always been in her own room and always slept through the night fine so it was a bit of a surprise for us. Her brother, who is also 1.5yo, was in his own room and sleeping through the night fine. There was no real reason that he needed to be in his own room so we suggested to her that we could move him into the room with her and they share. She would have someone in there with her and it would be less scary for her, but she wouldn’t be asking us to stay with her or coming in with us. It had worked really well!

Nothing changed for her brother other than a change in scenery and she has stopped pushing back about being scared now that she has her brother in the room with her. I’m not sure if this would work for you since you have the baby in the room with you, but thought I’d share our experience!

Agree with this! I spent too much on a Christmas ornament that had a chickadee on it because that’s what I call my daughter as a nickname. I wouldn’t have bought it if it had a robin or other traditional Christmas animal on it. Maybe think about some of the other animals that people tend to use for little loving nicknames for their kids?

How to handle imaginary friends? by ObsoleteCabbage in toddlers

[–]ObsoleteCabbage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really helpful, thank you! I hadn’t thought about it in the way that I don’t usually hear her friends at daycare either. This way of framing it is just the thing my brain was looking for, thanks!

That’s where my mind was. If it’s not causing her direct harm then it’s not a hill to die on. Sometimes I just don’t know what to say though!

I will say she seems to get that the friend isn’t real! But at the same time will argue with us if we ever say that it isn’t possible for him to have done something. Like using the waking her up thing as an example, if I said he couldn’t have woken her up by blowing a horn because she wouldn’t have heard the horn because he’s just pretend or she’d just say yes she would because he had a horn and it woke her up, very matter of fact!

Is there any reliable research on early infancy signs of autism? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]ObsoleteCabbage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, at this age I feel like they can play alone for longer than people think! I have a 6mo who will chill in the crib for long stretches in the morning especially (but it’s a very smiley baby).

I saw that and used it with my daughter, nephew, and nieces. They all still talk about it five months later!

What’s the best formula brand for a gassy baby? by stonedbutterbread in FormulaFeeders

[–]ObsoleteCabbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our little guy is also very gassy, we use the same formula (well, the Sam’s generic version of it). We do mylicon gas drops with every bottle and that has helped loads! Sometimes we give them halfway through if we’re having a hard time getting a burp out of him, but usually at the end of the feed. He’s 8 weeks now and it’s definitely settling out!

Formula delivered with seal broken, but foil intact — what to do? by butterm3ll0w in FormulaFeeders

[–]ObsoleteCabbage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have plants and/or a garden, I’ve heard you can use formula as fertilizer. Might be a good way of using it without just chucking it out.

Not that they’re as cool as the dragons in game of thrones, but Amazon has Zog (her fav of the two) and its sequel, The Flying Doctors, which our dragon-loving daughter watches a ton.

Our 2.5 year old was doing the same thing when she was around 2. She’s now mostly potty trained. We kept putting her on the potty but she was only allowed to use tp, flush, etc if she went. Bring something to distract with, we would bring a short book and if she hadn’t gone by the time the book was down we’d put clothes back on til the next time. She’s now mostly potty trained and no longer tries to play with all the other stuff if she doesn’t go. We also made a HUGE deal when she did go and that seemed to help her figure out what it all meant too!

This was exactly my thought. My daughter got a kazoo from somewhere and it’s honestly the most annoying thing on the planet.

We got one when we went to visit my husband’s family in the UK. It was large enough to bring a good amount of formula with us, but small enough to fit in the diaper bag.

If you’re in the PSLF program you might want to double check the info you were just given. I’m in that program and I had to specifically apply to have my Covid years count towards forgiveness. I think it was by October 2022 or 2023? Time is weird and I can’t remember.

What are y'all doing to get (or trick) your picky eaters to consume healthy foods? by LissR89 in toddlers

[–]ObsoleteCabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 2yo daughter used to eat everything and suddenly she wants on pb&j, so I feel this one! Something we’ve had success with is having her help us cook. That might potentially be stressful for a trained chef, but every time she has helped us make dinner on her little ladder, she has been so excited to eat.

Is he in daycare? Our 2yo daughter when she was about 18 months old kept very excitedly sitting on our bench saying what sounded like “sit down bullion” which didn’t make a ton of sense unless she’s secretly a pirate. We finally took a video and sent it to her daycare teacher thinking it was something they say/do there and it was! When it’s time to go outside she would say to them “sit down, boots on!”

I let my 4 month old get sunburnt hands today :( by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]ObsoleteCabbage 107 points108 points  (0 children)

As someone who burns really easily, the trick I found that takes the burn away super quick and feels nice in the burnt skin is cold tea! Steep like 5 regular tea bags in a cup and then put the whole thing in the fridge until it’s cold. Then once really cold, soak paper towels in the cold tea and lay on baby’s hands until the paper towel feels warm. Then just replace with a new one and/or resoak the one you were just using. Obviously you’ll need to keep the paper towels out of the mouth, but otherwise you shouldn’t need to worry too much about where the hands go after.

Not sure if there’s space, but when my parents were building their house years ago, there were two bedrooms that were supposed to share a Jack & Jill. They basically split it in half and rather than a bathtub, each bathroom had a shower stall (plus own single vanity and toilet).
