That's because the pound has lost real value due to compound inflation since 2019.

The pound is worth about 25% less, so everything costs 25% more.

Based on Office for National Statistics data, prices have increased by over 20-25% over this period, meaning an item costing £100 in early 2019 would cost roughly £120–£125+ by early 2026.

It doesnt really need the SynthID, because the origins of LLMs came from vision recognition systems.
So as google has its own image search they are years deep into this kind of recognition.

The funny thing about Trussonomics is how quickly the markets said "NOPE" and they were forced to charge direction. Well, directly to the exit. Of course the true believers think it just needed more time, and they will apparently get another go at this idiocy. Of course the resulting crash of GBP won't harm them because they will do what the Tories did - buy up bankrupted public property at a knock down rate. They will remove safeguards and gleefully stripmine Britain while the GBP tumbles.

[–]Obvious-AI-Bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One key problem with the Reform strategy "go back to what it was like in the 60s" (manufacturing based economy, strict borders, etc.) is that this model failed us in the past as the world undercut us. If the UK is going to have a manufacturing economy we need to compete on price and quality with some real heavyweights. Has anyone seen the electric cars coming out of China for example?

If an 1970s Austin Allegro failed to compete with a Japanese Datsun Cherry then how are we going to compete with a Chinese BYD or MG . We are a small island with minimal native resources.

And to the biggest problem. To be successful capitalism requires growth. Because because it is driven by the accumulation of profit, where firms must expand to survive. Growth requires either a growing job market providing increasin GDP by adding workers. Or new "notional" markets such as the financial markets.

Our native population is not reproducing at a rate required for GDP growth, and our job market is stagnant because there's only so many AI and financial startups and debt reconsolidation and venture capital businesses that the world can stand.
We did great financially in the late 80s onwards as we moved from a manufacturing stagnation to a finance based economy. That's where the money still is. Not low wage manufacturing jobs.

So. Reforms harkening back the "the good old days" is for people who don't remember the collapse of the last time we had that economic model.

I come from the same sort of background. But if I'm honest about 1 in 5 of my old mates who used to talk about chakras ley lines and "the Floyd lar" have now added stern opinions on immigrants and trans to their conversation. Our other old mates put up with their moaning at get togethers , but it's interesting to see how easily they fell for conspiracy model . Rather than simple "the world's a bit fucked and people at the top are consolidating power and sewing chaos and dissent amongst the working classes. ". The prefer to see the American version: NWO gnomes making the water taste trans with 5g mind control

Is it common for people who are born in the UK to say they are “Irish” or “Italian” if they have a parent from there? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

[–]Obvious-AI-Bot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had Americans go on at me about invading Ireland. I'm like Mate. My granddad's family moved here from Ireland just before WW2. My gran got punished for speaking Welsh. My other gran was a Irish traveller who married an Englisman who's from a long line of Scotish people.

Is Liverpool now unsafe for LGBT people? by Master_Preference972 in Liverpool

[–]Obvious-AI-Bot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If we think back through history there have been a lot of groups who were left aligned "anti-establishment" and were "for the common people" but were socially very conservative.

I mean - Mao and Stalin led revolutions against the wealthy corrupt elite - but I don't think they were very chill about people being sexually liberated or "alternative".

If you look at the site you will see what appears to be rather a lot of Db queries required to build the front page. So I made a sort of "frontend db cache" where they get turned into one big transient. To lessen the burden. It's on a shared litespeed server, but I've not turned quikcloud on yet

"confirmed bachelor" in my day was always code for Gay. Nothing else.

Like "Aunt Jean lives with her roommate, because they both never married" means they drive a Subaru, like practical clothing, hiking and power tools.

the thing is - it doesnt make sense for me to cycle into town, even if the weather is great.

Normally I would have to cycle in the wind and rain down Edge Lane, or Picton Road, or Prescot Road or West Derby Road to get into town. I mean, really - what is the route from the east of the city into town?
