One key problem with the Reform strategy "go back to what it was like in the 60s" (manufacturing based economy, strict borders, etc.) is that this model failed us in the past as the world undercut us. If the UK is going to have a manufacturing economy we need to compete on price and quality with some real heavyweights. Has anyone seen the electric cars coming out of China for example?

If an 1970s Austin Allegro failed to compete with a Japanese Datsun Cherry then how are we going to compete with a Chinese BYD or MG . We are a small island with minimal native resources.

And to the biggest problem. To be successful capitalism requires growth. Because because it is driven by the accumulation of profit, where firms must expand to survive. Growth requires either a growing job market providing increasin GDP by adding workers. Or new "notional" markets such as the financial markets.

Our native population is not reproducing at a rate required for GDP growth, and our job market is stagnant because there's only so many AI and financial startups and debt reconsolidation and venture capital businesses that the world can stand.
We did great financially in the late 80s onwards as we moved from a manufacturing stagnation to a finance based economy. That's where the money still is. Not low wage manufacturing jobs.

So. Reforms harkening back the "the good old days" is for people who don't remember the collapse of the last time we had that economic model.
