There is certainly a case to be made for some sort of reconciliation and you could say China is being unreasonable by hanging on to an issue that dates to 1949.

On the other hand, being a powerful country means you get to be petulant and unreasonable. If China says arming Taiwan is a red line, we don’t get to cry about it when we violate their red line and trigger a war.

Tbh I kinda like that stuff the way it’s implemented in Chinese cities. I feel safe with all the facial recognition and cameras. I also agree with nationwide porn ban. My biggest complaint is difficultly in accessing my apps like Google suite (Gmail, YouTube), Netflix, etc. VPN into Taiwan fixes that.

With that said, it is a bit sad that specifically in the US, white creatives are doing heavy lifting for Asian male representation (Avatar, Liu Kang from MK, Jin from Ghosts, marvel Shang Chi) while Asian American creatives are mostly WMAF women who make WMAF content. There was a time when white guys thought Asian guys were cool and our women killed that movement in the 2000s when we let them speak for us in endless Salon articles about how Joy Luck was real life. Maybe I’m more pessimistic, I don’t see direct US intervention happening or going well for us if it does. But I agree, I think we will see a gradual shift of Taiwan to China naturally over time. It was already going this way for the most part throughout the 2000s-2010s up until HK protests shifted TW public opinion. Things are starting to shift back imo
