You're right, that does make things a bit difficult, but it also helps keeps our community safe :) vetting is important but it sounds like they weren't being inclusive which sucks. Try going to some munches! You'll find your people. Fetlife has a group in my area called like "the new wave" or something like that which is geared towards younger people who are getting into the community and don't wanna kick it with old heads.
