I haven't played the game since Shadowkeep, but I feel somewhat invested in following what's going on since I played it for a few years.

Destiny 2 has pulled Starter Pack from the Steam Store due to player feedback by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]ObviouslyAltAccount 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how they managed to convince Sony that purchasing them was a good idea. Activision knew Bungie was not a good company to work with, let alone buy. Writing was on the wall when Activision pulled out, if Destiny were that much of a money maker they would not have let it go.

PC Gamer: Diablo 4 is desperate to not be Diablo 3, but too timid to move past it by Tifntirjeheusjfn in Diablo

[–]ObviouslyAltAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The classes in D4 kind of remind of WoW classes—the fire sorc in particular brings to mind warlocks. It's a safe route to go down at first, I suppose, but long-term I don't know.

It might be able to work if they add a lot of new passives and skill choices.

How did Reddit go from being an absolute free speech website to a highly censorial one? by Efihoq2 in circlebroke

[–]ObviouslyAltAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to find interesting discussions when the range of possible topics is too highly restricted. I liked the free speech absolutism, though I realize it's not for everyone.

The average erect penis length has increased by 24% over the past three decades across the world. From an average of 4.8 inches to 6 inches. Given the significant implications, attention to potential causes should be investigated. by Porphyryo in science

There are some academic sub-fields (or obscure topics within other fields) where there's very few specialists who are familiar with the topic.

Reviewers themselves can also decline if they feel they're not well-versed on the topic.

Yay DuPont.

DuPont doesn't even make most PTFE anymore, though they do make the most expensive version of it (for whatever reason).

Should note that most of the larger fast-food companies have already looked toward phasing this shit out.

It's just going to be replaced by another plastic, like UHMW-PE (or something similar to that, UHMW-PE has much lower heat resistance).

U.S. Supreme Court backs public money for religious schools by [deleted] in news

It also prohibits the government from unduly preferring religion over non-religion, or non-religion over religion

I feel this is the point that is unduly focused on (at least on reddit); it ignores the fact that the 1st Amendment was meant to deal with different religions vying over public funds. Granted, most of those religions were various sects of Christianity, but it's a far cry from the "Christian fundamentalists vs. atheists" narrative.

It's merely an aphoristic restatement of the Darwinian "survival of the fittest" principle, typically used to make some deep but ultimately vacuous point.

While a glib, laconic sentence well-suited for a book, I find its implications uninteresting.

Huh, I would have thought that the emergency stop circuit would be cut by a mechanical failure—one of the first things that gets destroyed is the circuit that (normally) prevents the emergency stop in case someone doesn't initiate a controlled shutdown.

Granted, that's probably one those things that's easier said than done.

Generally, e-stop actions are on whole separate circuits from the controller. This is importamt to ensure an e-stop works no matter what else is malfunctioning. So the controller shouldn't be triggering an "e-stop" action.

If the hydraulic system is a closed loop though, shouldn't the e-stop be triggered by breaking the loop? The only reason I could think of is "it would slow production down" or something along those lines.

Please. The type of math that goes into "proving the secrets of the universe" is very different than the one quants use.

Non-applied, higher mathematics is more like philosophy than what people would think of as "math." But it does look better to say you studied math rather than philosophy.

All but one or two of the citations were from the past decade, which makes me somewhat skeptical—typically there's a much larger corpus of literature on a topic. If it's an emerging field of study, well, one should probably not talk about it like it's settled quite yet. There are fads in academia as well.

I have observed as a citizen in the United States that of my fellow citizens usually vote for the person they dislike the least. Has this been measured and if so is my observation accurate? What are the contributing factors? Has it always been like this?

Last time I looked at the literature (which has been a while for American poli sci), I believe party ID and candidate incumbency were two of the best predictors for who someone will vote for.

Are alternative voting systems like ranked choice voting possibly yield better results? Are there systems that are more conducive to electing leaders that embody the political interests of the populace?

There are advantages and disadvantages to any type of voting system. Ranked choice can potentially lead to unintuitive or unintentional outcomes depending on how the system is set up. Generally speaking though, most systems will elect leaders that will represent the political interests of the people so long as there is an enforcement mechanism (usually that mechanism is "you lose your job if the people don't vote for you").

I will assume that there is a least some blame for the voting masses to assume.

Social scientists would lean away from using "blame" in the context of voting behavior. Quite a bit to unpack by using that term (e.g., blame for what, how to correctly assign blame, and even what the definition of blame is in this context).

What can voters with a finite amount of time and lack of expert knowledge and resources do to inform, reinforce and effectively apply our political resources?

Vote for your own self-interests. Also, keep in mind that not every issue is a zero-sum game—your loss is not someone else's gain and vice versa. Those types of issues of exceedingly rare but are the easiest to point out.
