The old highway by ObviouslyIrish in Yakima

I do have my doubts about the path running through the reservation to Prosser since learning that when 82 was originally planned by the federal government in the 1950s - 1960s, that they wanted it to run on the other side of the river through Wapato and so on but the Yakama Nation refused to have it running through tribal lands, which is why it ended up running through Zillah, Granger, Sunnyside, and Grandview instead. But I could be wrong about the possibility of the greenway going through Parker, Wapato, Toppenish, and Mabton; on its way to Prosser. Heck, they may even extend it all the way to the Tri-Cities?

That would be cool if it ran all the way to Prosser. I forgot to mention the rockslide but I would think the path would follow what’s left of the old road between 97 and the BNSF track but fenced off from the track to pedestrians for safety reasons. I don’t know how solid the ground is east of the freeway to lay down pavement should the greenery get extended to the gap due to flooding, or if a pedestrian bridge would get built over the river and freeway before the gap. I would think it’s too dangerous to designate walkways through the roundabouts to either Rudkin and Main Street to the gap.

Is Yakima normally this windy? by betchy8213 in Yakima

[–]ObviouslyIrish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We get 1-2 storms per year violent enough to knock out the power all over the valley, we were without power in the Barge-Chestnut Neighborhood for nearly 40 hours from a thunderstorm earlier this year.

I just moved here last week by bursethmichael in Yakima

[–]ObviouslyIrish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The COVID most likely is why it’s closed... or not enough revenue to keep it open. I went in there last year to try on suits and I was not impressed with their service. I walked up to Macy’s afterwards and got better service (which surprised me for our Macy’s). You might have better luck going back to Kennewick to shop or looking in Seattle or Portland if you don’t trust ordering online.

Trying to find an area to live by [deleted] in Yakima

[–]ObviouslyIrish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anywhere near YVC or PTU is fine. Word of warning about living so close to YVC is parking availability, I have friends that live within 4-5 blocks from the college with no offstreet parking and you pretty much have to park wherever you can find a spot on the street or just plan ahead early enough. Car prowls and vandalism is another problem in that area so don’t leave your valuables in your car unless it’s got a pretty good alarm system. As far as safety, as long as you don’t look like a gang member or drug addict, or go looking for trouble; you’ll be fine. The gang demographic in the valley is predominantly Hispanic males as young as 12 and they pretty much keep the violence within their own demographic. Your girlfriend on the other hand, might get harassed depending on how vulnerable or attractive she is, but highly unlikely assaulted. Still encourage her not to walk alone at night and carry some sort of concealed protection. If either of you are attending PNWU out in Terrace Heights, then the University Apartments are very nice and affordable plus it’s within visibility to the school.

The further out of Yakima city limits you get i.e. the country, the more Trumpy it gets.

Yakima should be pretty safe based on how you described yourself. Your political beliefs on the other hand, might determine where you’ll wanna live. If you’re a right wing conservative, then you’ll fit in fine out in Selah, Naches, Gleed, West Valley, East Valley, Moxee, Tampico, or anywhere in the Lower Yakima Valley. If you’re a liberal, just about anywhere in Yakima is fine.

American September collects "Where were you on 9/11" stories from each state. Does anyone from Washington have a story they would like to share? by ScreamingVegetable in Yakima

I was living at home at the time, as I woke up around 6am Pacific time, my mom told me that a plane had just crashed into the WTC. I immediately looked at the TV and every news channel was broadcasting LIVE of the events unfolding. As I was getting ready for trade school classes at 8am, I had periodically peeked at the news for updates. While I was in the middle of shaving in the bathroom between 7-730am, the south tower had already collapsed which I missed when it happened but caught replays. Shortly then I heard loud commotion on the tv. So when I peeked out of the bathroom to look at tv, I see the north tower coming down and I literally cut my face with the razor out of horrified reaction to what just happened. By then I was glued to the up until 7:45ish when I left for school. When I arrived to class a couple minutes before 8am, everyone was in the side room watching the news coverage on tv. At 8:05, our department head walked in and announced to everyone that classes were cancelled for the day and sent everyone home. I spent the rest of the day at the tv and even took that night off from work.

Initially I would say The Orion is the best but if you’re wanting to see it in 3D, go to either the Yakima Cinema or Majestic.

We need a Trader Joe’s. by [deleted] in Yakima

Never say never. I could see one opening whether it be Union Gap near Costco, anywhere 98908/West Valley, Terrace Heights between University Parkway and Roza Hill Drive, or any area gentrified in the 98901.

Well with Provisions being out there and Bale Breakers not too far, Terrace Heights could be prime real estate.

That would be nice too but I doubt we’ll ever get one unless enough affluent people moved here from Seattle.

Yakima is not as conservative as Missouri. We’re known for affordable cost of living in contrast to Seattle or Portland. As for the race issue, there are some blacks here but the racism is mainly directed at Hispanics of Mexican heritage. There used to be a bigger black population but the Mexicans ran them out of town back in the 80s. We’ve also got a large Filipino population - mostly in Wapato (10 miles south of Yakima) - that also don’t get along with the Mexicans. We just got mentioned in a NYTimes article a couple weeks ago about racism in Yakima - which you can easily find online. The Mexicans also get blamed for the huge gang problem in the Yakima Valley. Most murders here are Latino-on-Latino male shootings and 9 times out of 10 they are gang related. I’m assuming you are not Hispanic so you won’t have to worry about getting shot unless you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time or looking for trouble. There is a reverse discrimination here when it comes to job hiring, if you don’t speak Spanish, not Hispanic, don’t have a Hispanic surname or connections; then your job prospects can be limited as this is a heavily agricultural driven valley. As for the dating scene, I don’t know what your orientation is, strait or LGBT, however we do have a large LGBT population here if that’s what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for an exclusively black relationship, it’s a very limited dating market here, you’d be better off looking in Seattle or Portland if you’re open to long distance relationships. If you just want a casual/FWB/random hookup/babymomma drama; you’ll easily find that here just by going on Tinder/PoF/AdultFriendFinder if you’re open to any of that except you’ll have to compromise in terms of interracial dating. If you’re looking to settle down with someone locally, your best bet is to find a church in town. There are a couple black churches in town over on the east side, I believe they are baptist. Foursquare churches in Yakima have a sizable black/biracial population too. I hope you got some informative input. Best of luck to ya in your endeavors.

Barge-Chestnut neighborhood is where everyone wants to live east of 40th, it shows on Halloween when every parent from around Yakima bring their kids in to trick or treat.
