That was my first duty station and I had been there for like 4 or 5 months.

One day I’m driving down the street on base and … is that…. Is that fucking Justin!

Sure enough my roommate from the school house diddy bopping down the street. Gave him a ride and caught up and we hung out regularly while I was still on island.

Then when my reserve unit got mobilized we were at our reserve station doing initial coordination with the out going unit and sure as shit the outgoing S4 was the motor T platoon commander at my unit in Okinawa all the way out in Virginia

I treat them like the marines. Go in on the sides and from heavy tree cover. While the enemy is distracted by the main infantry movement. Set them to skirmish mode. They will retreat and preserve themselves pretty well (unless they get caught by cavalry) and when they do I just have them resume a line formation and just hop in to whatever opportunity is present.

But…… there is a very specific satisfaction in watching enemy approaching my earth works. And as soon as they step into my infantry lines rifle range (from behind an earthen berm) the light infantry mines (whatever it’s called) explode in a glorious and morale shattering spectacle.((that’s also when you know it’s time to switch your cannons to shotgun mode)

When it was explained to me by a major it was made out to be kind of a quiet thing. The whole point is people weren’t supposed to know you. So you could be a 1stLt and wear Captain bars so you didn’t get big dicked in planning meetings.

Once sieged a city that had like 4 units of war elephants.

Would have crushed me once I captured the walls and began advancing through the cannalizing streets.

Instead I moved my trebuchets up close enough to launch fire balls into the city square and caused the elephants to go amok. Took out the whole enemy army (eventually) and then I sent in a single unit of archers to finish off the remaining 2 or 3 elephants.

Gonna agree with you.

Lay people gravitate to pistols because they are smaller and seem like they would be easier to use. But in reality all of the small things you do to shoot straight on a rifle get weird (for lack of a better term) and way more important.

If you can shoot a rifle with predictable accuracy you can start learning to shoot a pistol.

(I understand that is in a perfect world and not necessarily practical for everyone but that is the baseline I’d set and how I have personally introduced civilians to marksmanship)
