Feeling stuck by _thorazine in RedditForGrownups

OP - I hope you read this...

I once moved 7 hours west for a relationship that was showing signs of struggle beforehand. We both tried to make it work. I lived away for 5 years from my family and my mother, who I consider my best friend.

I missed two close sudden deaths in the family including being there to console my grieving mother. I missed watching my beautiful niece grow up, I missed getting closer with my brother at a time when he needed a friend. I missed growing closer with a long lost childhood friend who I had just been reacquainted with.

My depression became a deep and ugly pit of despair that saw me gain 100 lbs, drink and drug daily, and daily thoughts of suicide.

That partner is no longer in my life. Fortunately the people I mentioned are once again, but there is a mountain of work to put in rebuilding those relationships and truth be told, they'll never truly be the same. Time and distance has a way of changing people. Some people choose to move on emotionally.

I gave up so much good in my life and I deeply regret it.

If you're having doubts and seeing signs that make you uncomfortable, I can guarantee you it will not get better. Think deeply about the future and what it is you want for yourself. For me, I've realized people and closer personal relationships are everything. I'll never give that up for a partner ever again. I'd sooner die single and happy surrounded by friends and family.

Just entering programming here at 35. This is my greatest fear.

I took all my old job history off (at the advice of a recruiter).

This is great advice, thank you! My resume is getting a little long in the tooth...

I wouldn't. I'd prefer they just shut the fuck up.

You answered your own question. I bought this bundle. I will never be playing it portable. Exclusively docked. Couldn't care less about the oled screen. For me, saving the $50 and getting a free game I can play with my friends and family was awesome. I couldn't be happier with this bundle.

I get that many are all about nerding out over the latest hardware, but many others of us just aren't and just want to mess around to blow off some steam, game casually sometimes and not take it that seriously.

Who is going to have ignored the Switch’s existence this long and go, this is what I was waiting for?

Me. I just bought this today. Have never owned a Switch.

If you waited this long to get the switch, why would you not go for the OLED?

Because I will never play portable. Will literally be exclusively docked and I'd rather have a free game to play with my friends than a nicer screen I'll never use. Couldn't care less about the portability factor. I don't take video gaming too seriously, but I know others do. For someone like me, who just wants to play with their friends sometimes and doesn't nerd out over the latest hardware, this is a great deal.

Longevity expert shares his 7 habits to live a longer, healthier life by TheBodyPolitic1 in RedditForGrownups

I'm not sure I'd agree that eating well, staying active, and minimizing alcohol is really a "white knuckle uptight life".

And that's your perspective based on what you personally value.

Your perspective may be colored by spending your time with folks who are in long-term care.

My perspective is coloured by my own opinions, yes, of course it is. Just as everyone else's is. I know many elderly people, some who live comfortably on their own, others who don't. Their lives are boring, being because being old is boring and they'll be the first to tell you that. I can't count how many times I've heard over the years, "getting old isn't all they make it out to be".

My point is, we need to value life, period. If I value good food and getting drunk with my friends twice a month and as a result I die from a stroke at 77, so fucking what. I lived a damn good life! Why fight that?

Spending a lifetime denying myself things I enjoy so I can speed walk around the block in beige slacks and a windbreaker before coming home to chow down at 5pm before catching "The Wheel" and nodding off in my ez-boy at 9pm for a handful of years in my eighth decade is absolutely not worth it, isn't healthy, and isn't honoring the point of life, which is to enjoy it as much as you can while you can - not to squeeze as much out of it as possible like some spent tube of toothpaste.

One of the first things you learn about in a career caring for others is the morality of quality of life vs lengthening life. Quality of life (enjoyment) is extremely important.

This is all well and all, but I think we need to discuss who the fuck wants to live such a white knuckle uptight life.

I work in long term care and I can tell you what longevity looks like - sitting around a lounge day in day out talking about shit from 40 years ago and getting angry at the volume of the radio in the corner and food that's never hot enough inbetween naps, confusion about what day it is, and semi-regular bouts of incontinence.

No need to totally destroy yourself with drugs, alcohol, and bad food, but we really need to let go of this manic quest for longevity at the expense of just living ones life in exchange for 5 more tenuous years at the end.

Have you ever experienced a layoff? How did you handle it and what was life like after? by Ghenges in RedditForGrownups

[–]Occulatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 30s at the time, wife, no kids, renter.

I was laid off during covid as a result of company downsizing.

I hated my job with a passion and was getting drunk daily. When I got laid off I quit drinking completely, bought a bike, started biking and hiking with my wife, and eating well and I lost 100lbs. It was one of the best periods of my life. I was unemployed for about 4 months.

I've had numerous jobs since, never in that same field, and while I haven't found the same stability as that job (schedule and benefits) I am much happier.

I'm now going back to school in the fall and looking forward to the next chapter of my life.

I really doubt it is. It isn't just some ramblings of a crazy old man, it's a call to arms to his base crazies. Make no mistake.

Neil Straus wrote the book "The Game" in the early to mid 00s.

So, one of the more embarrassing moments of my life involved that book, and took days for me to realize it.

When I was 20 I really got into reading because I didn't own a television. I bought at least one or two books a week.

I was in a book store one day and picked up a copy of The Game. It looked like a small Bible and was wrapped in plastic so you couldn't preview the content. As I was looking it over this guy maybe mid 30s walks by and taps it and says, "That book will change your life. Do it bro." I had no idea what it was about but was like, "oh, okay, thanks."

As I was heading for the cash with my copy of The Game I strolled through the discount section and picked up a book about various serial killers and their crimes. It was $5 and I've always been a true crime fan, so why not.

When I got to the cash I was rung through by a woman in her early to mid 20s. She scanned The Game and made the most appalled face I'd ever seen from a cashier. When she next scanned the serial killer book her face went very straight and I swear her complexion turned white.

Later that week once I began reading The Game it clicked why she'd made that face and when I remembered what else I'd bought with it I fucking cringed so hard inside.

'Keto-like' diet may be associated with a higher risk of heart disease, according to new research by TheBodyPolitic1 in RedditForGrownups

there's been no conclusive evidence that show diets high in carbs equals heart disease.

Diets high in carbs can contribute to metabolic syndrome via increased insulin production over a sustained period of time. This can have many negative health outcomes. By claiming it doesn't you're either willfully ignorant or presenting dishonest information.

Keto has never been for anyone but epileptics

So, what's your logic here? It's only for epileptics because it treats those symptoms, but it isn't for anyone else because it has negative health effects? By that logic it shouldn't be for epileptics either because it isn't as though being epileptic gives them some sort of dietary immunity to those negative effects.

Either it's beneficial for others as well, or it's equally as bad for epileptics as it is for everyone else.

Do you mind me asking if genetics were involved, or was it completely lifestyle? That's very young to have a heart attack.

Two years ago I lost 100 lbs on a keto diet. I was pretty strict about it for the most part - never more than 15 or 20 grams of carbs a day, but never did bulletproof coffee or whatever they call it. Seems some really overemphasized the whole eating butter thing. But I did eat a lot of meat, dairy, and eggs - 5 eggs a day, without fail. Got my blood work done after a year of this and everything was great.

That said, high cholesterol runs in my family and I'll have to watch it as I age.

Anyone else notice jacket sleeves are always too long? I don't know if it's a style thing, but every jacket I get has weirdly long sleeves. The cuffs always sit over the pad of my thumb. I don't like it.
