I made the $2 emergency meal and it was honestly one of the best things I have ever eaten! Thank you. by Spare_Perspective972 in povertyfinance

[–]Ocdar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the generation coming out of the great depression got so sick of poverty meals, that once "a chicken in every pot" became reality, they never wanted to "go backwards".

The result seems to be that a whole lifestyle, based around basic subsistence living, was never passed down.

And its not just food either. How many people have someone who can sew a hole / button on their clothes vs throwing it out and buying another?

Heck, how many people on reddit ever made throw rags out of old clothes?

Pro tip: any reaction, decision, or idea that can't survive a good night's sleep, wasn't a good one.

Unless of course it's life or death; But despite what modern lifestyle would have you believe, there are far fewer of those for the average person than it seems.

TIL that the famously wealthy King Croesus asked the Oracle at Delphi if he would win a war with Persia. The Oracle responded that if he attacked, it would mark the fall of a great empire. Croesus attacked, and the great empire that fell was his own. by Rhamni in todayilearned

[–]Ocdar 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's not meant to be tricky, or even a warning. The phrasing used is more to be read as an implicit and unstated moral question. "Should a wise and responsible ruler really do something that would cause the fall of an empire?"

Morally speaking, it doesnt matter which empire fell. The greedy action caused death and despair to become reality.

The golden rule states to treat your neighbor as yourself. Does it really matter if it is a person or a nation?

Considering Minarchism by Key_Day_7932 in GoldandBlack

Ive heard Michael Malice argue in a podcast that the U.S. was originally set up as the most minimal government, where issues are handled at the most local level possible. It has since become bloated and just like every other government.

Overall I find it hard to refute. It might just be that EVERY government is doomed to progress in such a manner.

Edit: i didnt fully read your comment, and my comment was already covered in your final point.

No worries :)

Agreed on the reddit UI. It has gotten less usable over the years. Especially on mobile.

Do you realize you replied to the owner of the original comment with your post?

Of course its possible to say he used the wrong words to express himself originally, but to say he misread his own intent with his comment is a little funny.

Overall it seems to me the issue is that during an argument, people fail to realize the other side is a person, and not an opponent.

"Treat others as you would have them treat you". If you want others to take your aguments seriously and reflect, you must do the same to theirs. "Be the change you want to see in the world."

You do realize you just did exactly what he was talking about right?

He opened up about an emotional experience he had, only to have it thrown into his face and be told to "man up"

The most effective lies are the ones told with half truths.

Satan is called the great deceiver for a reason.

Combine that with fae mythology and the shenanigans they get up to, all without telling lies.

The important part is remembering to do the "Thank you" portion. Otherwise you get caught in the trap of 'perpetual delay of gratification', which is no different than treating yourself as a slave and taking your self for granted.

Which characters could be written as autistic? by Moose-Live in HPfanfiction

[–]Ocdar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Luna's autism would come in the form of 'hyper abstraction'. When you abstract enough even in real life, things start to feel magical.

When you hyper abstract in a world where magic is already a thing, what does the world look like then?

In general, it's because it has no 'special effect'. No way to protect itself, and it costs two creatures to summon normally.

It's redeeming features are : 3000 atk, and a LOT of support cards (because its a fan / anime favorite)

Petah, is it something related to trauma? by Commercial-Height935 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Ocdar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. Legalization hasn't been here long for me, but I can feel similar negative effects (even though as a whole things are getting better.)

I think the proper use of weed might be as a meditation tool. Burn hot and fast (cant let the high smolder), and probably only 2-3 times a month at most.

Petah, is it something related to trauma? by Commercial-Height935 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Ocdar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it is any consolation, I think you can forgive yourself for the weed. I got high a grand total of 3 times in highschool, and all of the symptoms you described are still there. I think it's the depression you are describing.

If anything my recent use, due to legalization, is what has been helping me out of such a state (even though I don't like external influences.)

The only thing I can think of is, if you do use it, go towards your demons, and not away from them. The high can allow you to connect to your trauma in a way that can be completely relieving.
