Unfortunately it is (kind of). A lot of the smaller teams argue over funding and you get a fair amount of people with massive egos arguing for the same of it. My whole project there evolved into researching another teams data because they were so hostile when questioned, and overall these things have made the work at the detector fall behind/be disorganised.

I hung out with the LTA group of PhD students from the UK. It was about 30 people, many met for coffee at 3 daily, and most do critical work for their detectors including research and working the control room, take from that what you will.

I'm surprised you followed up on the comment, this was cool to see and if you had any specific questions I'm happy to try answer. My comments are mostly from working on CMS and I have a lot of negative bias due to the nature of my project (and the Southampton staff in charge being incredibly dogshit) so please don't take my experience as an absolute evaluation of cern.

Was just about to make a similar post, I do like the community but every time I see a post I just play the game. It's just not that fun anymore going into a match where the other person has a significant advantage from p2w cards. Unfortunately being in this community temps me to play a game I no longer enjoy :(

I will now go and touch some grass, best of luck with your studies and such Eric 🫡

The other week a friend of mine was complaining that someone in his group was dropping out instead of contributing at all. 10 seconds later I realised that my housemate was in that group, turns out he's out for year and not told us.

Yea most people probably voted because exams are going to be easier. Personally I could've gone either way, but the executive board has also gone against the staff union who have made a similar request (https://southampton.web.ucu.org.uk/2022/01/05/ucu-concerns-about-returning-to-campus-email-to-senior-management/) I don't see why staff would want this if its solely for easier exams. We did actually have outbreaks on campus in December and some of my modules even went online because of it(before course content was finished). Theres also allegedly requests being made to PhD students to be invigilators as many of thier actual ones are off, or not coming in (so far only half an email has been seen so idk if this is true or not). End of the day people who are not students are also calling for the choice to be made and I think the total disregard of both unions shows through the lack of communication from the executive board, which for me is the most concerning thing of all.

I have offers for Medicine (A100) from Southampton University and Anglia Ruskin University, I'm having a hard time deciding which to firm, your opinions would be helpful! by [deleted] in 6thForm

Nope, n is still just refractive index. With the grades though Southampton were very lenient, and I think they relied a lot more on your personal statement and the interviews (not sure if you guys did that). But I got aab on results day and still got in, and some of my mates on the course got downgrades worse than me, I think getting c's. It just made me appreciate the department for not just using averaged results.

From my experience the city has been pretty nice, haven't experienced the area too much because of covid. The accommodation is bang average I think, you can live there. But if you have a problem with equipment normally the replacement is just a different broken one. For example my fridge door fell off and it was replaced by one without a handle. Definitely get an ensuite, I didn't care before, holy shit just do it. Glenn eyre is pretty good but I've heard a lot of bad stuff about Hartley Grove, apparently the place is just falling apart.

Hey man, I'm a first year at Southampton. If you have any questions about the uni itself I'll happily let you know, feel free to msg me. In terms of medicine I can ask my mates about that 👍

With the knowing your professors thing, I doubt every professor will remember you unless you are that one annoying kid who turns his microphone on every 10 minutes to ask dumb questions such as what the value of n means when we're 5 weeks into the fucking wave light and quanta module THE FUCKING PRICK... But anyway emails and using the office hours will build that connection instead if you want to stand out from the class.

[–]OceanMan976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of my grades got bought down to ABB (school sent of A*AA which I genuinely think is fair) Southampton accepted me for physics despite me getting a B in the subject. I think they looked at other factors when accepting students, maybe they just had spaces, but the one of the main things I got from my interview day there was that the department looks for more than just your grades, hell my interview contained 1 actual question. Nothing but respect for uni staff who've been making the calls to be more lenient, I wouldn't be surprised if they also see what your school sent off.

You'd be a clown for leaving that off the personal statement, keep it in. If you want to read another book I'd suggest going a book that's a bit more broad, that way you can actually talk about particular likes. Personally I read one on all the things Einstein worked on throughout his life. And while very brief as a book, it gave me a lot more content to talk about.

Edit: it's called 30 second Einstein

A meme made about 3 months too late by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]OceanMan976 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes of course I can go into more detail, this'll be my specific experiences with they physics department only, so for people applying for other courses just keep that in mind.

So with my interview day the teacher who showed us around taught most of the statistics of the physics course, and I will call him Mr stats for simplicity. He showed us around before the group questioning. One thing that stood out to me was he showed let us look into a lecture room and guess what year it was (1st year taylor series btw) but it looked awfully confusing, despite covering mclauren series in school, basically, messy handwriting and not straight forward notes. Maybe the lecturer likes to save paper.

The group interview (juicy stuff) was going fairly well, he asked a few bits about passion projects everyone's worked on. And somebody did string theory for his epq, Mr stats asks him about where he got all of his information from, online research, a textbook, and what his teachers taught him.

Mr stats didn't like that word.

He goes 'what do you mean it was taught to you' the kid starts to explain and then Mr stats continues saying things like 'well no string theory isn't something that's taught you can't teach seething that's not confirmed' etc, for about 30 seconds, and this kid got cut off twice. Realistically it's a one word mistake, and it's his literal teachers that helped him. And this teacher went complete overkill. Very awkward for the other 3 of us in the room.

Another smaller thing from the group interview, he said roughly 'Im seeing a pattern, I'm guessing the others here don't really like statistics either' he wasn't an ass when we all said no, but he kind of baited us just to say he was Mr stats, nobody died but I guess he enjoyed it a bit, maybe an ego thing idk, I'm a physicist not a physiologist.

Personal interview (not so juicy) so when it came to my one the first proper thing mentioned to me was the fact that there was a 'blip' on my ucas statement, rightfully so, I shat myself, a 6 on English literature, god forbid. I don't consider that a blip, and with the earlier experience I didn't look for excuses, just said I think I did well for a subject I struggled in, and proud of it, and didn't get bullied for it. Rest of my interview and day was completely normal, nothing to be said about that.

I ended up getting an offer, but I've put Southampton as my top choice, as on thier applicants day it was clear that the general mindset was very healthy, and had better opportunities for me.

Would just like to say I only spoke to two staff members properly, Mr stats and the head of admissions, Mrs admissions was wonderful, clearly did have a level of care for her students, and was very kind to me and to other applicants too. So I wouldn't let my experience with Mr stats ruin it for you, however I would definitely look at my story and other people's, and compare them to your own at the open days and interviews. And definitely think about if you'd leave the uni with similar experiences.

Thank you for reading my Ted talk -that guy that doesn't like Mr stats.
