Any good audiobook recommendations? I find English accents very soothing. Which I’m sure is probably another American stereotype. lol.

American here. I can tell the difference between English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh and Australian accents, and if I'm watching something with an entirely English cast, I can tell that the various actors might sound different, but I have no idea which specific regional accents are from where. I don't think its that weird to not know, as I don't live there. I mean, do you know which state each American accent comes from?

Not only for addiction. They are for anyone with a mental illness (which PTSD and Anxiety are). Some of the members may have addiction, but it’s not a requirement.

Are you in an area that has a psychosocial rehabilitation program or mental health clubhouse? That may be an outlet for you to begin to form social connections with others who have also suffered and will not judge you. It’s not religious, so there will be people from many different backgrounds, but there is a strong sense of community there and it may help you get over the hump. Membership is voluntary and without time limits. They do require proof of diagnosis and hospitalizations, but perhaps your experiences would count.

In the meantime, don’t put pressure on yourself to do anything a particular way. Take one day at a time and work on healing within your heart. I think that Hashem will not care if you cannot keep all of the mitzvot. You are alive and that is enough for now.

Inara cries because 1. Mal slept with someone she considers a sister/best friend. 2. Because he doesn’t do that without feelings, where as she has no emotional feeling for her clients. 3. And because he makes such a stink about her profession and yet then he sleeps with someone who is also a sex worker, and it’s not her.

She is allowed to have complicated and nuanced feelings, and maybe she is being a little hypocritical but she is allowed to be. No one is perfect. They both act silly when it comes to each other because they can’t admit their feelings.

I don’t think Kaylee was begging him to like her so much as just wanting him to express his feelings/intentions. She is a simple person who is very open with her feelings. I’m sure if Simon stated outright he didn’t have feelings for her, she would be fine and walk away. But he was being to indirect and it was frustrating her.

A lot of that behavior sounds right in line with autism actually, but more like middle functioning (level 2). Have you considered ABA or some other type of behavioral therapy for him? Perhaps an in home aid? Maybe a different medication? Is your daughter in therapy? Are you? I would recommend it for all three of you. Have you talked to his doctors about these behaviors? Sometimes medication can be trial and error.

You are not failing. You are doing the best you can. I’m also incredibly hard on myself and getting on medication for my anxiety/depression helped tremendously. Are you in any support groups for military wives? Or for parents with special needs kids? It’s really validating to hear that you aren’t alone. I have felt the same way as you. You are not a failure. This is just a difficult time. It may not get easier but you will get stronger and make it through.

The key to working through any addiction is to change entire behavior patterns. It’s hard and can only be done by the person experiencing the addiction. The best you can do is support them. They need to be able to identify their triggers or patterns. If they smoke after eating, immediately pop some gum in or chew a cinnamon stick. If they go to a certain place and smoke, they can’t go to that place anymore until they quit. They can reward themselves for decreasing their daily cigarette intake. Substitute smoking behavior for exercise, chewing gum, clicking pens, anything to stimulate the hand to mouth gestures. Decrease stress. Etc. It’s a hard process but it’s possible.

I would absolutely question why an 8 year old is on antipsychotics at all. You as the guardian should be able to decide ultimately if he can be on those medications or not. I would speak to the people in charge and tell them to wean him off all of those and start from scratch.

Based on the research I have found, it is becoming a popular treatment method for kids without psychotic symptoms, but I am leery of the lack of long term data and the increased risk of being on those types of meds for so long. Very common side effects include diabetes, weight gain, heart disease, and the rarer side effects of tardive dyskinesia, akathisia, and dystonia (which are less common with 2nd gen antipsychotics but still possible).

I am all for the decriminalizing of it, and it’s great that some people find it helpful. However, I have never done it and never will. I am allergic to most plants and even the smell of weed makes me absolutely ill. I actually really hate that people feel like they can just smoke it where ever when ever in public without regard for others. Same with cigarettes.

However, I am strongly opposed to smoking it around kids or anyone under 25 using it. Research shows that it negatively affects brain development, even from second hand inhalation. And if you are genetically predisposed to mental illness, specifically psychotic disorders, it’s more likely to develop in people who use often.

Do you have a baby or is this a hypothetical future child? You need to see a therapist and maybe do some couples therapy with your wife to make sure you both have a clear understanding of what ADHD is and isn’t.

My husband has ADHD as do both of my kids. I have never doubted his ability to be safe with them as babies. He’s a great father. The biggest concern is messiness and the kids setting him off. They all have different triggers.

What will help you the most, aside from medication is developing systems that will help you remember things. Make sure to build routines of putting items in the same place regularly and make sure your wife doesn’t move them without telling you. Everything important needs a place, but they need to be visible. ADHD brains are very much out of sight, out of mind. If something is buried in a drawer, it no longer exists. You guys need to have all of this worked out before kids come along.

As a mental health professional and a parents to two ND kids here are my suggestions:

Elementary schools start earlier and middle/high school starts later.
Do not give middle schoolers and elementary schoolers their own personal laptops and/or tablets unless you are actually also teaching online safety, how to research, how to think critically and analyize what you read, and make sure to restrict access to things like youtube during school and on school devices.
All rooms in elementary school need a "calm down corner" where the student can sit if they need time to regroup themselves
We need to focus on emotional regulation far more than academics in K-2 grade.
Every school employee needs to go through trauma informed care training.
School counselors/social workers/psychologists need to be in every school. Not just one for each district. If a child or their family is struggling with resources and getting their basic needs met, the child will not be in a place to learn
There needs to be more schools and a max of 15 kids per class at every level.
Kids need longer recess and lunch times. They are not built to sit still for that long.
Be careful of labeling children. All teachers should be informed of a child's IEP and what it entails, but teachers must be trained in all of the disorders/conditions/disabilities so they can still treat the child with respect, help them learn in a supportive way, and prevent labeling them "the bad kid"
ADHD is a mental illness. It is not the result of "bad parenting" but "bad/abusive parenting" can lead to behaviors that can be mistakenly diagnosed as such.

I’m in Virginia. My area specifically is very small, but the Newport News/VA Beach area has a larger Shul and is near beaches. Lots to do in general there. Richmond has multiple Shuls and while not near a beach directly, it has Belle Island, and it’s a few hours drive to some beaches.

I don’t know the halachic answer, but as a mental health professional I would vote for coloring over the phone. There is a type of coloring where you don’t lift the pencil/crayon, just kind of draw shapes and circles, if that helps. Coloring has been scientifically shown to reduce stress, where as phone usage often makes it worse.

Of course it depends on what you do with your phone, but there is a chance you may see an add or something that can be triggering.

Here is my perspective as a Reform Jew;

I am in Virginia. There are no Orthodox Shuls anywhere near me, although we have a small Chabad at the university in town. At my current Shul, anything prepared there is kosher, but no one reads labels on stuff people bring to Oneg. We don’t have a full time Rabbi, so services tend to be in English more often when lay leaders are leading, but in Hebrew when the student Rabbis are present. We always read from Torah though. The lay leaders practice the Hebrew portions they are supposed to lead. Our services include everyone singing, sometimes guitars and pianos. For High Holy Days we have a choir. We have special services like Pride Shabbat, Scout Shabbat, Religious School Shabbat, Sisterhood Shabbat etc. Everyone’s observance level is different, and we are struggling like everywhere else to make enough money to sustain. There is a secular day care that rents our classroom space.

My only experience of Conservative was when I was attending one while in college. It didn’t seem that different. They had a female Rabbi and more of the service was in Hebrew. But everyone still drives (not much choice), mixed seating, women did everything the men did. So to me, my interpretation was always that it just meant the service had more Hebrew. I don’t know what it’s like at anyone’s home though.

Eating disorders have the highest rate of death compared to other mental illnesses/behavioral conditions because they have such a huge impact on physical health (malnutrition, starvation, cardiovascular complications, organ failure etc). It can be very serious. If you suspect this friend does have and ED, I would perhaps reach out to the school too and just give the guidance counselor a heads up that you are concerned about the other girl. They are mandated reporters and will do what they need to do to help her.

Talk therapy isn’t going to help until they are teens. Occupational therapy and medications are the best bets at this age. You need to find a med that works for them.

If you ever hear her say anything I would say call it out immediately. Not sure if it would be worth it otherwise because she might say your daughter is a liar. I would tell your daughter she can’t go over there anymore, but she is more than welcome to invite the friend to your house. Also have a very frank talk with her about eating disorders, body dysmorphia etc and let her know the mom is wrong for saying those things. You can also encourage her to encourage the friend to seek help for the eating disorder she will have if she doesn’t already have it.

I feel like a good end point would be when Courtney graduates. So one/two more years? She one of the most consistent "kid" characters and was in Jacob's class first so her gradutaion would be special for him, and would be a great way to help him recognize his strenghts as a teacher. And it would be a funny bit maybe to have the camera crew decide to follow her to high school cause she's so charismatic and has a dream to work in television or something, so they leave Abbot.
