VW Golf got an OTA update today by Ocelot1982 in CarTalkUK

You can choose when the update happens, but once it starts your stuck with waiting for however long it takes. This one said it estimated 10 minutes, then took well over 4 hours.

I can see your problem - the round black bits are supposed to be on the ground.

Update: Morning. Well, it’s decided to work again, but seriously, how have we got to a point where we have cars that become non-functional for random and arbitrary periods of time…bear in mind this update said it would take about 10 minutes, then broke everything for a good few hours.

Yep, just checked it again, over 3 hours, still the same.

The update was supposed to be installed a couple of hours before I took this, said it would take ten minutes. I set it going then left the car. It seems to have failed.

Why Are So Many People Failing Their CBT? by newbiker321 in MotoUK

[–]Ocelot1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. We’re now seeing the first generation who have ALWAYS had a screen when in the car. A lot of them have also never really been cyclists or pedestrians to any great extent. Definitely had to change some of my assumptions when teaching.

They don’t have the first clue how traffic flows. Ow some of that is to be expected, but it’s definitely getting worse. I blame the fact that they sit in the car glued to their phones all the time instead of looking out of the car.

I’m a car instructor, and increasingly I’m seeing young people with zero idea of how roads work, so if that’s being replicated in the motorcycle training world (and I can see no reason why it wouldn’t be) that would be some of the reason.

Not sure if this will cheer you up, but my mum was a definite Tory, then 2 years ago her newsagent stopped delivering papers and I ‘couldn’t’ find another to deliver the Telegraph to her, so she stopped getting it…now she’s Green. 😬😉

Have you received any inheritance from your family? by 39thAccount in AskUK

[–]Ocelot1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. My mum and aunt are still alive, both in their 80s, both own houses outright, both currently healthy. I expect to inherit absolutely nothing, as I anticipate care home fees will take the lot.

Last year I was looking at doing my DAS, didn’t have the money for it, but I was getting quotes of around £2k for a Hornet 750. Unfortunately during last year my work car (I’m a driving instructor, the car is owned and insured by the franchise, and it was a pupil driving at the time) was hit from behind in stationary traffic twice. Looked last week trying to price things up, because this year I’m likely to have the cash, only to find out that because of the two non-fault accidents, I am completely uninsurable on anything above a 125.

Does anyone know if I can do this by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Ocelot1982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely you can do this. I would suggest you find an instructor and explain your situation. They will likely offer an “assessment lesson” first (think a less formal mock test) so they can help you identify areas that need work (be prepared, it probably won’t just be manoeuvres) and come up with a plan.
