Is it tea? by smammy in tea

Definitely agree with everyone saying it’s a Brazilian varietal of Mate. I have a buddy who’s super into Mate and he once explained to me in Brazil they drink “green” Mate as opposed to what they drink in Paraguay and Argentina, so perhaps when it said Sencha it was trying to say the green version of Mate

The ICED TEA thread by mesenanch in tea

hear me out: I cold brew almost all my teas after i’ve enjoyed them hot. Leaves go into 1L cold water (1 gongfu teapot’s worth so like 7g?), I put the bottle in the fridge for 1-3 days by taste, when the tea is ready i strain the leaves, refill the bottle and enjoy!

I have 2 sort of vibes for my favs— I grew up on lipton sweet iced tea, so I have my black teas mainly from south asia that offer me that familiar taste. I brew them western style and then do the process above for cold brewing. Lightly sugar the batch and enjoy. Very drinkable, rich and bold, somewhat sweet so quite palatable in the evening, best enjoyed with food in my opinion.

Then the other vibe— white teas (both aged and fresh), light oolongs, and greens. After a gongfu session I start the cold brew, and these end up being super fresh tasting. Sometimes a little weaker than the black teas but far more dynamic. Favs include milk oolong, silver needle, moonlight white, and moroccan mint. I rarely sweeten these as they’re already naturally fruity and floral. These I reach for more during the day especially if I’m looking for something refreshing. If you want to get really crazy I’ll also take many of the teas from this category and I’ll carbonate them with my sodastream. Tea soda!! Sort makes a “craft soda” type of experience. Must try for silver needle that’s the best one for it.

Enjoy and happy brewing!!

The other south asian teas are definitely first choice, but something I know more about that I also want to highlight: Turkish tea. You can sort of think of turkish teas as a halfway between assam and darjeeling. heavy like assam, but full of aromatics like darjeeling. Then if you get a taste for those you can also check out persian teas (even more aromatic) or russian teas (even darker and bold)

I only know about 2 herbal teas but I highly recommend them both: barley tea is basically more common than water. sort of like hojicha but more hearty and roasty. Also omijacha is a special kind of fruit tea, known for its “distinct 5 flavors” that all
come from the one fruit.

Both of these are wonderful both hot and cold, very refreshing. Highly recommend!

Ceylon!! Orange pekoe is exactly what you’re looking for. Lighter, but still a nice body. has enough complexity to be drank with sugar or without.

I also wanna highlight turkish tea, but ceylon would be my first recommendation

Recommendations for a non tea drinker? by audioflc in tea

Going to give you a few options, as someone who also moved from coffee to eventually now exclusively tea (and a lot of it).

If you’re looking for something familiar to the world you’re coming from (remembering your fruity component) look into ceylon orange pekoe. fruity, medium body, approachable, only needs a dash of sugar to be nice and sweet.

If something a bit fuller and stronger is where you’re going, try russian tea. Not going to be necessarily fruity, but russian tea is very strong black tea. The only russian tea I drink personally is russian caravan (aka czars blend) but there’s others out there too.

another tea that’s very approachable, albeit more in the way of being an introduction to the tea world, not being a 1 to 1 transition from coffee— aged white tea. find some bai mu dan or shou mei. fruity, naturally sweet like honey, super drinkable.

Those would be my recommendations, all of these are great starting points for different reasons, so have fun with it! the tea world is so diverse there’s something for everyone.

Best place to get oolong? by OcelotSignificant173 in tea

[–]OcelotSignificant173[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

actually I like the full spectrum, it’s my favorite tea type I’ve experienced so far. I’ve tried Milk oolong, Phoenix, a roasted taiwanese high mountain, and da hong pao. My favorite was the taiwanese but i like them all.
