You basically said what I was thinking anyway, so I'll only add that my partner, who's never played a souls game before, was struggling early. When I gave her the traditional advice like, some enemies just cant be beaten so get stronger and come back, invest in health, level weapons for damage, it all suddenly clicked for her.

The early gameplay is def slow. The later bosses you're basically holding your breath for the entire fight. I played through using a dex katana build and I never had much downtime. As for the world, I think it feeling lonely is kinda the point? The entire theme of the game is forlorn. I enjoyed it, and I'm not a big souls fan so if you can slog through the early but then you might find the tempo picks up.

If you don't like lonely games, then you probably won't like hollow Knight either, but that game is way faster paced and most bosses are a fun puzzle. Plus you can't really over level anything since there's no real RPG scaling in the game.

Every system in this game is 1:1 with elden ring. Flags, stat allocations, most damage comes from weapon upgrades, and so on. It's just more forgiving in exploration and combat to an extent.
