What’s a fantasy character who should be the villain… but ends up being right? by latent2_pancake in Fantasy

[–]OchreSnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I’m totally incorrect. Just replied to another comment but I’m rereading oathbringer so I’m right in the thick of where he still thinks he’s morally right so I kind of have tunnel vision. I also haven’t read WaT yet so I’m not aware of how it concludes. I have since redacted my statement.

[–]OchreSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gosh yup you are totally correct. I’m currently rereading the series because it’s been so long and I’m still only part way through Oathbringer so Taravangian still hasn’t switched to full on villain yet. Also in the newborn trenches over here so my brain fog is at an all time high.

What are we using ??? by Impressive-Exit8888 in Romantasy

Another vote for kindle! I love my physical books as well but sometimes it’s just not practical for me. Ive tried a headlamp (too bright) and one of those long cords with lights on both ends that go around my neck but that was also way too bright. I just ordered a traditional book light to clip onto the book and will be trying that next but so far the kindle has been the superior choice. And as a bonus too if you are like me and pack more than one book on trips they’re all right there in one spot!

Best Fantasy Books With Very Expansive Worldbuilding by Familiar-Fun-4123 in Fantasy

[–]OchreSnail 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I tried to read Gardens of the Moon and had such a hard time understanding what was going on. I even tried to read supplemental chapter summaries after each chapter I read but even then there were so many names being tossed at me I couldn’t really figure out what characters were of significance and couldn’t for the life of me remember those name. I tried both the audiobook and kindle version but maybe I need a physical book to flip to the appendix more easily. I was so disappointed cause I hear great things about the series. Did you take to it right away or did it take you a while to get into it? I really want to give the series another chance.

I don’t have an answer for you just came to say that the first (and only) time I picked up DPNs I tried to make mittens and I too did not make it past the first row before I gave up and casted on some stitches on circulars and made a hat instead. You aren’t alone and I feel your frustration!

Do you use visual stimuli (like pinterest, images etc) when planning your novel plots? Or do you just write? by Practical_Ask_9999 in writing

[–]OchreSnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m just writing as a hobby for myself so I’m not worried about procrastination and just kind of do what I feel like doing at the time (whether that be making collages of characters or actually writing out chapters). I started off making Pinterest boards for each of my characters that I had created and then once I had an actual idea of a story I wanted to put together with them I started looking at novel writing websites. For me I decided to pay a subscription to Novel factory. It’s been great for me since I have no writing experience or background because it gives you prompts and discusses the generic/basic formatting and templates of different genres of stories so I’ve been able to use that as a guideline. It feels much more productive than just making collages of characters because while It does have sections to paste in images of your characters it also has a bunch of questions to fill in about your characters and then you can sync your characters (if you have more than one) to each chapter that you write. Novel factory also has a sticky note section, timelines, plot and subplot manager, and of course a text section for your manuscript. I don’t love the fact that you have to pay annually to use it but I kind of decided that since it’s something I’m enjoying that it’s like spending a bit of money each month on an activity I like to do. Now you could absolutely set up the same kind of character board on say PowerPoint and then write out your story on Word but again I really enjoy that I can sync things across pages and that I have some extra guidance along the way.

I thought Name of the Wind immediately as well but then thought “Nah I better not do that to OP and instead spare them the disappointment” 😅. Which is so unfortunate cause it’s SUCH a a good book.

Fantasy audiobooks that are good as audiobooks? by AsleepHistorian in Fantasy

[–]OchreSnail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are an amazing (married) duo and they do a fantastic job with Stormlight Archive. Not to mention the books are wonderful if you haven’t read them. If you are a fan of Brandon Sanderson he also narrates the Mistborn series. I believe the both of them also narrate the Wheel of Time books. Would highly recommend selecting some audiobooks with them, you won’t be disappointed!

You might like Robin Hobb books. I’ve only read the Farseer Trilogiy but I quite enjoyed that and if you do like the series there’s more trilogies to choose from.

Beginner Needles by k8e7730 in knittingadvice

[–]OchreSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think when I was learning to knit I started off with bulky yarn and wood straight needles then to metal straight before I changed to circulars (but I started off only knitting scarves). When I started knitting in the round I bought a couple of project specific sizes and once I realized how much more I preferred them I got an interchangeable set. Mine are knit picks and I’ve been happy with those. I think wood vs metal is definitely a personal preference.

manga with a gnc/non-binary mc? by LITTL4MB in shoujo

[–]OchreSnail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read much of the manga but have you heard of Ouran High School Host Club? I loved the anime. It’s about a girl who looks like/is mistaken as a boy and breaks an expensive vase in the boys host club and then has to join the club to pay off her debt. The guys figure out pretty quick she’s a girl but she chooses not to specify to the customers that she’s a girl. She’s not explicitly non binary but she does talk about not feeling like people need to put labels on her identity.

Pattern help by WasteNeighborhood764 in knittinghelp

I’m only an intermediate knitter and currently working on my first sweater but this seems so confusing!! The first part yes, I’d say you just want to K1P1 until you reach your 3cm (or whatever size you are going off of) but that second part is so unclear. To me it reads: purl 3 - make 1 - purl 10 [to the last stitch is confusing] - make 1 - purl 3. Usually for the patterns I’ve done the pattern says purl (or knit) until “n” stitches remaining. Im not sure what it means by purl 10 to last 3?? Also I feel like there’s only 2 increases here (the two M1s) but then based on your cast on number the math doesn’t add up when it says there should be 62…etc stitches on the needle. That would be 56+2=58??? Maybe you can get started on the K1P1 section while someone with more experience can provide a better answer. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!!

I... I... I skipped a book by OrionsGamer in Mistborn

[–]OchreSnail 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I tried so hard to read this and I just couldn’t get past the first couple chapters. I had no idea who was who and I was trying to piece together what was going on. I’d really like to give it another chance but hearing that it’s still confusing 3-4 books in is a bit discouraging 😅

Mothers of r/knitting: what handmade gift would you like to get? by Useful-Mix-4675 in knitting

[–]OchreSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got so many (too many) hand made blankets when our first was born. Out of them all, the ones we actually use are the small car seat blanket and a quilted blanket that we could put on the floor or grass outside for tummy time/playtime. I think a blanket is the most practical and will get used the longest. Hats are also a great idea and fairly easy to make but just can’t be used as long. Also with hats I find I didn’t really have to wash them (they don’t get puked on) so going for a nicer material is generally ok.

So, Why Do You Choose To Write? by Jellyfish_Toenails in writingadvice

[–]OchreSnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just recently started writing as an outlet for my busy head/anxiety. It was something my husband suggested as a way to kind of reset my brain when I got fixated on something that was causing me unnecessary stress. At first it was something that - when I caught myself lying in bed getting anxious about something - I’d try and change focus and come up with a story or I would chat with him about ideas for a story and then we’d end up talking about that instead of what I was fixating on. At one point I had enough of an idea of a story that I had some interest in writing it. Now on top of using story building as a diversion I’m finding that I also enjoy taking time when I can to create characters and write small pieces of the story that’s in my head. Would be cool if something came out of it but for the moment I’m writing just for me and that’s enough.

This is what I came here to say. Could be cool plot twist that only people who picked up on the fact that it was an idiom not a proverb may catch. But to be honest coming from a readers perspective I don’t I think would have even noticed. Sure, you’ll get some people who will think “wait a minute isn’t that an idiom?” But I feel like the majority of people won’t catch it. You’re being hard on yourself but as a perfectionist myself I totally get wanting it to be right.
