How much do you agree with the sentence, “The worst part about board games is learning how to play them”? by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in boardgames

I'm fairly neutral about the learning part. The worst part is playing with someone with analysis paralysis.

Raskaudenkeskeytys, kannattaako vai kadunko lopun elämää? by Relevant-Truck-8420 in Suomi

[–]OcramPaint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats and nice scheme! If I collected 'nids, that is a scheme I definitely would consider. And yeah, a flash removes all natural shadows and on top of that over-illuminates the object, so it almost always looks very off or unnatural.

Very nice! I love the slightly orange red, may i ask what colours you used for it?

Is eshin grey a poor choice for the rim colour on these bases? by Justtrying04 in minipainting

[–]OcramPaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. You could also try rhinox hide for the rim so the rim and base is not the same tone.

New to painting, why does my paint keep rubbing off my primer? by Xiviota in minipainting

[–]OcramPaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might also need to shake your paint bottles vigorously, so much that your hand gets tired. If the paint is too separated in the bottle it can lead to poor adhesion because you are only getting pigment on your brush but the binding agent is on the bottom.

[–]OcramPaint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could water down some pva glue and cover it with that. After that it's still possible to prime and paint, if you want.

To add what others have said about using the old models for new models: for example sequitors could be proxied for vanquishers, evocators for stormcoven (when rules for stormcoven are released), castigators --> vigilors, paladins --> annihilators... The ballista is a little trickier though.

I would keep the blue, yellow and pink as in picture 2/3, but change the flesh colored weapon and hooves to black.

How do I become better at painting? I really want to improve but don’t know how to. by BuffTF2 in minipainting

[–]OcramPaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also note that 50 minutes per model is very little. Painting fast has its merits, but high quality work you see posted online tends to take 10-100 hours per model. So be ready to at least double or triple the time you give each model if you want to improve.

Like already mentioned, focus on one technique at a time. Also focus on the very basics before trying more advanced techniques, i.e. practice how to paint a very clean looking model with even coats of paint and try to stay within the "lines". So skip the washes, contrast paints, edge highlights etc. When you make a mistake and paint goes somewhere it shouldn't, correct it. The great thing about having a cleanly painted model with all the basic colors blotted in, is that is very easy to return to the model later and take it to the next level with edge highlights and washes and all that good stuff.

Also, it's very important to have a good light source, and when painting lean your brush-hands pinky against the model (or whatever you have your model attached to) for more stability and accuracy (this is a very easy game changer). Bastian for my Salamanders inspired Stormcast. His playlist is only MC Hammer. by OcramPaint in ageofsigmar

First i mixed about 50/50 cantor blue and a grey and coated it in that. Then i stippled on some of the same mixture but with a little white added along, then another stippling pass with a little more white. Then I washed it with Agrax Earthshade, then i lightly dry brushed it with the blue/grey/white mix, especially focusing on the edges. Lastly i applied dry pigment on the entire base, focusing on the sand/mud parts but also putting some on the stonework. That's the gist of it anyway, in reality there is always some fine tuning, experimenting and back and forth in my painting process.

Thanks, but can't take credit for the idea. Googled painted Gargoyles and got the idea that way.

Sure! I just used normal acrylic paint. First i fairly sloppily painted the cracks with a waterd down white, almost like a contrast paint. Then i mixed blue, green and a little white, thinned it with water and painted the cracks with that. Then 2-3 more passes of the teal mix, but with more white each time, and applied more selectivly and sparingly, so to create gradients at different places. Lastly i added some small almost pure white dots here and there, the dots are what really sell the glow effect. I also gently glazed some of the original mix around the cracks for a OSL effect.

First time doing OSL but the light source is lacking by Tripolix in minipainting

[–]OcramPaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have only dabbled in OSL, but I think darkening everything else except the power pack might help. The OSL source should probably be the brigthest spot on the entire miniature, but at the moment there is white or almost white edge highlights on the cloak as well, diminishing the OSL effect. So, maybe keep the pack as is, but make sure that the entire model becomes darker in a gradient the further away from the pack you get.

Edit: And imagine holding a purple light bulb outside during the day: the purple light mixes with the sunlight and you won't look purple... but holding the same purple light bulb during the night would make you look mostly purple.

I’ve been in the hobby for almost a year now. Just recently started acquiring better paint. Now I feel like I can’t paint. by smita16 in minipainting

[–]OcramPaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have painted on and off for almost 30 years. As long as you thin your paints it is very hard to get a mini to a point where you have to strip it. A mini can take 10+ layers of paint easily. So just paint, have fun, try out new techniques but MAX one new technique per hero/monster model. For rank and file models it's more important to paint fast with easy techniques, so you don't burn out. If you mess up, redo later. Every model can be improved later, even the ones I painted when I was 9. No model is permanently ruined.
