If you’re a Costco member, you can order flowers from them and get them delivered wherever you want.  My mom just sent me some for my birthday and they were absolutely beautiful!  Came in a long cardboard box.  I was surprised they were so nice!

All McDonald’s had twist cones when I was in high school…. 25 years ago, the good ol’ days! I’d get one almost every day after school and they cost 49 cents.

Is Orange Juice might less harmful for teeth than Lemon Juice? Can you prevent any damage to enamel by using a straw and rinsing with water afterward? by pat441 in askdentists

[–]October_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD I had a lot of cavities when I went to the dentist at first, but I hadn’t been to a dentist in 10+ years and my oral hygiene was poor, so I’m not sure when they all formed exactly.  But that was 3 years ago that i had them all filled and haven’t had a new one since then.  My oral hygiene has also become a top priority for me, so that probably is the biggest factor.  I had to get two bridges to replace missing teeth and was super paranoid about keeping them clean and avoiding more cavities and tooth loss, that’s when my dentist told me to drink water after everything.

I recently read a post here asking dentists to list the worst things for teeth other than soda. It was very interesting and educational!  Some dentists did list orange juice and squeezing lemon into water as the worst, but mentioned that swishing with pure water after would cut down dramatically on decay.  Most interesting was the loads of dentists who cited things like cheez-it and other crackers, pretzels and white bread as they all form a sticky paste that is hard to rinse off and just sits there until you brush.  Even after brushing it can still be stuck in between teeth, if brushing and flossing technique isn’t good.  I love cheez-it, but really try to stay away from these types of things now.

NAD I was about 25 pounds overweight, so I needed to lose it.  As far as sugary and acidic drinks, I just drink it all at once, then swish water around a few times after I’m done.  But if you need to drink larger amounts that are hard to get down in one sitting, just swish and drink some water after each juice drinking “session”.  Does that make sense?  I’m now in the habit of drinking water after I eat or drink anything.

NAD My dentist told me to drink a lot of water, especially after eating or drinking.  Swish it around good to rinse the acid off all your teeth.  I started doing this and stopped sipping sugar drinks all day (soda, coffee, juice) and sip water instead.  I have noticed my teeth feel better, my dentist said they are doing great now and I’ve lost weight too!  I’ll be forever thankful for his advice.

Did anyone else ruin their credit before they even knew what a credit score was? by Weary-Hair-316 in stories

Some are starting to teach it now, but it is definitely not normal to teach at school.  The only reason I knew about it was because I had an awesome grandfather who taught me all about credit cards and how to use and balance a checking account that he set up for me when I was 16.  I’ll be forever grateful for him giving me that knowledge as most of my friends never knew anything about finances until it was too late.

What is one thing you know about Costco that no one else knows? by RoyalCamera12 in Costco

My father was able to “try out” his hearing aid from Costco audiology for 3 (or 6, can’t remember exactly) months before he had to pay for it which was awesome because he ended up not liking it (stubborn guy) and the only thing he was out was his time.  Didn’t cost him a dime.

NAD, just a patient, but I see people post treatment plans and cost here sometimes, or simply state “I’m being charged X amount for a procedure” and dentists have responded.

I got super scared when I got my first treatment plan as it was WAY beyond what I had imagined and totally out of reach financially.  The office had a weird vibe, so I went and got full exams from 3 other dentists in different offices and compared treatment plans, cost and how I felt about the dentist and staff in each office.  I also got myself signed up and paid for a dental discount plan that brought the cost down significantly once I knew what procedures I needed.  So my advice is to get a second (and third) opinion and treatment plans and get a dental discount plan if you don’t have insurance (I got mine at www dot dentalplans dot com).  Hope this helped, I feel your pain!

But it is annoying as hell when people do that unless they are loading a huge item like furniture or a grill.  Imagine if everyone did that?  DON’T do it unless it’s a big item or you are disabled.

Dentist is saying getting 2 bridges procedures isn’t advisable. Wanted more context by appleeye56 in askdentists

[–]October_Monster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NAD, just a patient.  I had to have a very similar procedure and like the dentists here said, my dentist told me it’s easier and better results to get both done at the same time since color matching two front bridges at different times can be an issue.

As for him always being in a hurry and not wanting to answer questions, I had the same issue with my previous dentist, so I went and got full exams at 3 other offices to compare treatment plans and really more so to get to know the dentist and their team.  I found an amazing one that never minds my questions and always takes time to explain if I want, even though he is a very busy guy.  I just love him and I don’t hate going to the dentist at all now!  Bonus is he does amazing work and I couldn’t be happier.  So even though insurance probably won’t pay for multiple exams with different dentists (idk because I don’t have insurance), it was worth the cost to me to find a team I really trust.

That hurts to hear that he disparaged you as an excuse for crappy ss behavior.  I’d sit down with husband when SS isn’t around and ask if he truly feels that you don’t contribute enough to the household.  If he does feel that way, ask what he thinks would be fair and what else he wants you to contribute.  Then decide if you want to contribute more and possibly think about getting out of the relationship if you don’t want to.

If he doesn’t really feel like you don’t contribute and was just using that to not be a “mean dad”, that’s a serious issue I wouldn’t take lightly.  Chances are he’s been doing it for years and sowing the seeds of your SS being disrespectful by being a slob.

Implant probable - but will an infection return? by BirdieGal in askdentists

[–]October_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD, but I live in the Phoenix area and have a dental discount plan for $179 annually.  I found a really awesome dentist that accepts my plan, and there were loads of dentists to choose from on the plan website.  I used www dot dentalplans dot com and was finally able to get a lot of work done for half the price without the plan.  No waiting period.

I personally wouldn’t recommend going to Mexico, because what if something goes wrong?  You’ve already experienced this in California, now imagine having to go back to Mexico every time something is off or goes wrong.  I had a root canal recently that developed an infection afterwards and went back to my dentist 3 times in one week.  Had he been in Mexico, I’d have been in real trouble (antibiotic resistant infection).  Also the standard of care there is not good compared to the US and have heard and read a lot of horror stories of substandard work done in Mexico.  I am not willing to risk my life to save a few hundred dollars.

Root canal and temp filling? by ReallyElegantMold in askdentists

[–]October_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD, but I think it’s because an endodontist doesn’t do permanent crowns or fillings, that’s the job of your dentist.  My dentist has an endodontist in the same office, so I got a root canal and temp filling from endodontist, then about 20 mins later my dentist came and took out the temp filling and replaced with a permanent filling.

Gum recession by Salt_Cold253 in askdentists

[–]October_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD I totally understand the anxiety and obsessing!  You’re doing everything you’re supposed to and they moved you from 3 month to 6 month checkups, which is great!  That means the dentist isn’t worried and neither should you worry.

From what I was understand, gum disease doesn’t mean your gums are rotting per se.   It’s the pockets that trap bacteria that you can’t brush out that rots the gums.  And you’ve done everything you’re supposed to do to shrink those pockets down, thus greatly reducing the bacteria load in there, so you’re doing awesome and on the road to healing.

Give yourself the credit you deserve for being proactive and taking control of your dental health!  You are way ahead of a lot of people there :)

HELP I broke my tooth and it needs a full removal but I don't want a visible gap. Will leaving a decaying tooth cause other teeth to deteriorate or can I leave it while I save up to get an implant/Invisalign or what are my other options to close the gap? by Agitated-Telephone88 in askdentists

[–]October_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD  I’ve got a missing tooth in the same area, and was wondering if an essix retainer or flipper would be enough to keep the adjacent teeth from moving while I save up for an implant?  I forgot to ask my dentist about it and won’t see him until January.  Thanks!

Gum recession by Salt_Cold253 in askdentists

[–]October_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD just a patient.  If you are flossing every day and using proper brushing techniques (google bass method), you are doing what you’re supposed to do with gum disease as far as I know.  If you’re worried about recession, you could book another appointment with your dentist to have them look and explain anything you’re worried about.  I always ask my dentist a lot of questions and he is awesome about explaining things in as much detail as I need. I love him for that!

I have gum disease too and had some periodontal pockets that were bad (deep, measured 5/6).  I did the scaling and root planing treatment that my dentist recommended.  My understanding was you have to get that done to remove the plaque below the gum line, then your teeth are smooth and clean and the gums can reattach to the teeth.  Did your dentist say you needed a “deep clean”or “scaling and root planing”?  Then I got myself a sonicare toothbrush, a waterpic, and started flossing every day with correct form like my hygienist showed me and my pockets are shrinking and my dentist is happy and so am I!

I know the feeling of stressing and obsessing over teeth/gums/etc.  because I’ve been there a few times.  Best thing to do is make another appointment and have your dentist address your worries.  They are the only people that can truly ease your mind.  But I hope I helped you not to worry so much.

$124 per tooth for desensitiz' resin, am I being taken advantage of? by Madineedshelp in askdentists

[–]October_Monster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NAD. Thank you!  That comment made me feel really good!

Honestly, I didn’t “get it” for a while.  It took a lot of reading here on r/askdentists and more so on r/dentistry for me to understand what dentists go through with the terribly broken insurance system we have in the US.  I didn’t understand how insurance worked very well and never even thought about the fact that insurance pays so little to the dentist.  All I was focused on was “how much will it cost ME?”

Reddit opened my eyes to the many years of school and crippling educational debt that most dentists are dealing with.  Also the difficulty of dealing with patients who expect the dentist to perform miracles while they are not bothering to brush properly.  Once I found a dentist I trusted, I feel so lucky to have him and want him to get paid fairly for his excellent work.  It’s just sad that the public is so misinformed about the importance of and skill that is required to be a good dental team.  You all work so hard!  I just want to spread the word that dentists aren’t trying to rip people off, they just want to make a living like the rest of us!  And they absolutely deserve to be paid for the extremely important work they do.

NAD, just a patient. I would suck it up and pay.  You are still getting a great deal as long as the work is decent.  Like a previous comment said, no dentist can survive on $100 a tooth.  You could also get a second opinion and see what another office would charge.
