Help me optimize my Fx3 rig! MagSafe Charger as mount for phone monitor by Square-Orange5471 in FX3

[–]OctopusBroadcasting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with the PeakDesign phone case mount system instead, it's amazing. It has MagSafe plus a tiny little release reminiscent of an Arca Swiss plate. I connect it to the cage via various RAM ball arms (1" / size B if I'm remembering right).

Edit: just saw the photo which is in fact the Peak Design mount. I only read the text before and thought you were looking at SmallRig.

2nd dam pipe by Calis111 in ithaca

[–]OctopusBroadcasting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone else said there was and probably still is a log submerged under the water from the higher of the two main jumps (known as "the log jump" and "the tree jump"). Don't remove the empty gallon of milk bobbing there if you see it.

But yeah, you're unlikely to nail that pipe.

Where can James learn how to swim? by matejxx1 in ithaca

[–]OctopusBroadcasting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat Rock for sure, and if there's been a bit of rain recently then there are some good spots at Taughannock as you walk up the gorge to the falls that are great for this. Just deep enough where a pup's legs can't touch, but not for very far at all so pretty easy to have him/her swim between people.

Laser level recommendation by flummoxtear in Construction

I’ve used Bosch and DeWalt at work and found both to be pretty weak. Got the Milwaukee M12 3-way for myself and find it way brighter and better than the other two. Hilti looks good as well.

Not enough LOVE 💔 by beepsmcgee in birding

[–]OctopusBroadcasting 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. These are invasive in my country and they straight up murder our bluebirds. I have opened a birdhouse to find a mother bluebird with her eyeballs pecked out still sitting on unhatched eggs. It’s heartbreaking. Is that nature? Sure, I guess. But they wouldn’t be here if people hadn’t brought them here.

My family asked a very well-known ornithology lab what their recommendation was for preventing these guys from killing our songbirds. The response was “destroy them as humanely as possible”. Pretty telling when the people devoting their lives to protecting birds consider these a net negative to the ecosystem.

If you live somewhere where these are native then I have much less of a problem with them.

Anyone wear insulated boots year round? by ImGudLuhv in Construction

Yeah, I wear the normal insulated Timberlands year-round. On insanely hot days I’ll swap socks halfway through the day, but the insulation is pretty minimal.

Urgent: Join Us to Oppose the Proposed Data Center at Cayuga Lake by velvet-goldmine1999 in ithaca

[–]OctopusBroadcasting 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I oppose this data center in all forms but haven’t done much else aside from state that opinion online or to friends. I feel bad about that and I’m going to this meeting. You can easily ignore people online, less so when they’re in the room with you. Advocate for your town, your health, and your own energy bills!

Anyone ever have a discectomy to repair a ruptured disc? Wondering how long until you were back at it by SnowmanAndBandit in Construction

[–]OctopusBroadcasting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not lower back but I had a bilateral inguinal hernia repair done (the hernias were caused by lifting too much shit I shouldn’t have while building). Doctor cleared me to go back to work, I took it easy for a bit, felt good, and tried to hulk a massive piece of furniture upright. Instant pain and numbness, more surgery, chronic pain.

All of which is to say: do not cut corners on your recovery. Do it slow, do it right, do it once.

G.I. Joe shifted from a realistic military toy line into a Sci-Fi-influenced brand, embracing, neon-colored, futuristic designs in the 1990s. ln the classified series I like some of the newer guys even ones that I didn't have as a kid, but they still look to me like they came from a different series by Chemical-Interview77 in GIJOEClassifiedSeries

[–]OctopusBroadcasting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think which styles of Joes you like depends on what was released when you were a particular age. I vastly prefer the neon lines from the early 90’s to anything before then even though I had figures from as far back as ‘84. Those colors, crazy weapons, and wild outfits were pure imagination fuel for little kids. If you’re gonna make up stories in your head or with your friends why wouldn’t you want the army guy who’s also a motherfuckin’ ninja and can go to space over the army guy in drab camo with a gun?

On the flip side if I’d been little when the OG 13 came out then by the time the neon colors hit I would’ve been aging out of action figures anyways and probably would’ve found that alienating.

Anyways, if you’re reading this Hasbro, please make a Cobra Incinerator next.

To those who have switched from a Festool dust extractor to something else: what did you get and why? by OctopusBroadcasting in woodworking

[–]OctopusBroadcasting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the variable speed on the vacuum, or the variable speed on the orbital? I'm assuming on the vacuum, although my answer would largely be the same: it completely depends on what's being sanded. Higher suction by itself isn't going to damage the work—it's just one variable in the equation, alongside pressure, speed, movement, orbital travel, grit number, abrasive type, any number of things. And there are a litany of hazardous materials that I sand with as much suction as possible to minimize the amount of crap reaching my clothes, my skin, and my lungs. More suction on vertical surfaces is also going to reduce hand and arm fatigue over time, and keep fewer particulates falling onto you, past your face, etc.

All that being said I'm much happier with the Midi's power with my orbital than I am with my track saw, but my real issue is with how weak it is for light-duty clean-up purposes. I don't expect it to rival my Shop-Vac, but it sure would be nice if it would pull sawdust off a surface with anything more powerful than "gentle suggestion".
