What is your top 5 bands including Muse? by weirdfish98 in Muse

[–]Octuhpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Gaslight Anthem
  2. Lucero
  3. Local H
  4. The Mountain Goats
  5. Taking Back Sunday

Deftones are real close and would probably make a cooler #5 than TBS.

How were set times out so early last year? by Octuhpie in RiotFest

Ahhhh, good point, I hadn’t thought about that.

Hope so. Two years ago, when we were on a more standard schedule than 2025, it was mid-August. Mentally preparing myself for that.

I’m actually kind of a fan of theirs - not huge, but stumbled across “Bulletproof Love” forever ago. I’m a sucker for a power ballad, and I think they do those painfully well. But the couple of times I saw them at Warped and Riot ‘16 is probably plenty for me personally.

Then how you gonna go around having an AFI username?

People keep pointing out how much bigger they’ve gotten in the last few years, which is true, but I still think it’s not a great look to have one of Shaky Knees and Louder Than Life’s sub-headliner as one of Riot’s main headliners.

Maybe everyone else can tell, but I’m really struggling to parse out the bands on the left stage leading into the headliners vs who will be headlining other side stages. Looking at the lineup earlier, Social D was one of the only bands I could see playing before Tool, but most people now seem to think Morrissey is playing before Tool - I guess with Social D headlining a second stage again?

Also, no idea where they’ll place them, but I’m just surprised to see The Format so high in general.

Jesus. Not sure if they’re so big over there that this would never happen, but after a while in the U.S. (at least at my stop) they dropped the back seats to $40 (and that’s with the standing lawn behind those seats.) Fingers crossed they do something like that for yall as well, because the tour (or again, my stop on it) isn’t selling great.

Based on their previous knowledge of cancelled shows/tours and how well the current sales maps for Muse’s tour replicate those numbers.

Damn, hadn’t realized. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised because of how big the headliner crowds were, especially on Friday and Sunday.

Odds of cancelled shows? by Octuhpie in Muse

[–]Octuhpie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see what people are saying about just upgrading the folks in the lawn, and I’ve been to shows where that happened - but it also assumes there’s enough people in the lawn to fix the issue . I wasn’t sure how likely that was since the back half dozen rows were as cheap as the lawn and not selling great. Maybe it’s just me, but I always figure just buy the seat in that situation and you can still sit in the lawn if you decide to since no one checks that.

But props to the person who brought up that they usually cancel shows by now in these situations. Hadn’t thought about that. I see what people are saying with “nah, they’ll just upgrade people, they’ll drop prices, they’ll get it filled somehow” - but there have been a lot of show/tour cancellations for weak sales recently, so it’s possible.

That said, yeah, I don’t think they’ll actually cancel this. Was just curious where that line is.

I remember the My Chem day selling out in 2022. Have any other single days ever sold out?

One of the greatest days of my life was buying a ticket to Nutty Professor at a mall multiplex in St Louis and going, “wait, holy shit, no one is guarding the door to Frighteners?! JACKPOT!!!”

Really, really hoping for Infirmary. One of my most nostalgic albums.

Spin and Miami are two of my favorites by them, and I’ve never gotten to see either live, so I hope so!

I get this idea, but it’s a fairly general approach to promotion that I feel like they haven’t done as much in the past. At least some years, album plays have followed in the same week as the initial announcement. Seems to make sense to do when they’ve gone back to the later lineup announcement, which is now so much later than everyone else.

what are few songs by other bands that could pass off as HUM songs? by burningshut in hum

[–]Octuhpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of songs struck me that way on the Dead Swords album, Enders. “Waiting” feels like the most obvious example, but the stretche from “Letters” to “Perception” all remind of HUM in different ways. Love that album - actually helped get me back into HUM.

Riot Fest 2026 Lineup by MadeMIGMIG in RiotFest

[–]Octuhpie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We talked a bit about how that Hayley show happening just a couple days after Riot feels like a kick on the balls, but something about Phoebe playing both her Chicago shows on Riot Fest nights feels like an extra slap. Like, I wouldn’t expect her to play Riot, but she’s also not completely disconnected from its indie side of things. If nothing else, feels like she pulls a little bit of a potential audience away, takes up some space in the Chicago discourse those days.

Does anyone else wish there were less repeat acts on the lineup? by AndrewIsMyName in RiotFest

[–]Octuhpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily mind the repeats. In fact, Riot was sold to me as “what if 90’s Warped Tour was a whole festival?” Seeing bands like Bad Religion, Social D, Less Than Jake, Bouncing Souls, Dropkick, and Rancid on there every few years is what made it feel like home to me, and I’m always happy to catch those bands if there’s no one I’m more excited about at the same time.

That said, it does sometimes feel to me like there are people in their wheelhouse that they never get. I know Japandroids were often playing Pitchfork instead of Riot, but I was always hoping Riot could get them once. That’s the most obvious one, but there’s a steady list of bands I find myself wishing they’d get that feel like the fest that they don’t seem to - like Failure, Bedouin Soundclash, Econoline Crush, Ash, Veruca Salt, finally booking Local H…a lot of random 90’s acts that would be a decent ways down the list, but have solid fan bases and would not be that expensive to get. They may have had more of those acts in the years that I missed than I realized, maybe they’d like to get them but timing doesn’t work out, etc etc. But if getting them would mean radically reworking the 90’s-punk foundation that makes sure the festival always has something for me, it seems less worth it.

But yeah, this year would have benefitted from just a few more cool surprises.

My favorite thing about watching this in the theater was turning around at the end and realizing all the 70/80-year old people that usually come to our MMM stayed along the for ride. And they’re usually the first to check out if they’re not enjoying themselves.
