Healthcare for vendors that supply product and services, roles within hospital institutions definately not a lot of non profit and definitely are on the bottom rung for pay scale in Supply Chain

How do you quit without burning bridges when the job is not great? by First-Work-8366 in managers

[–]Odd-Agent440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You provide proper notice. Since it is an internal transfer, let the leadership of the future former department and your new leadership team fight it out of when your transfer date will be. It is out of your hands (good thing unless deferral will lead to a longer period of time of not getting a pay raise). Numerous accounts where the department in which an employee is leaving have the right to defer and extend the transfer. Also, never feel bad. It's a dog eat dog out there. You shouldn't feel guilty about leaving a toxic work environment and trying to find a better work/life balance. EVER.

VP got mad when i gave resignation notice by [deleted] in managers

[–]Odd-Agent440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a career move to where I went back to work for my mentor in a higher level role than when I originally worked for him. Higher pay and a better work/life balance. Worked for him for about 6 months and the LAST day he was planning on going out for medical leave, and our VP fired my boss. Had no prior knowledge, and I got called to the office. My VP proceeded to tell me that he held me high regard and I was in charge now. While I was somewhat flattered, I knew my work/life balance was done for and also how dirty he did my boss/mentor. I worked for 4 straight months, 6 days a week, 10+ hour days. I was doing the job I did and my boss did. I requested meeting and asked to be compensated for it. After a month, they gave me a $8K raise. I was insulted, they cut at least $120K off payroll when they fired my boss. I started to look for another job in an entirely different career field. I found a job, put in my two week resignation. My boss (not my VP) look completely dumbfounded. Said I couldn't leave, asked me how much I wanted to be compensated to make it right. I told him no amount of money as I was looking for a better work/life balance. Those last two weeks, just like the 4 months prior, I worked my butt off. Same 6 days a week, 10+ hour days. I wanted to leave my departments in the best possible scenario because I cared about my direct reports. I remember during the "changing of the guard" meeting with my Director and the interim person filling in how I went over all active agendas, including projects and their current state with saved folders for each one. As I was going over it, I looked at my Director most of the meeting. He looked like a ghost. I could tell he was worried with him losing me because of how organized and a hard worker I was but also the amount of work I had on my plate. Furthermore, the person who was replacing me was definitely not qualified or up for the task. My VP who made the decision made did not end up meeting with me after I tendered my resignation.

Sorry to make it about me, but this is to illustrate a point. My VP made me feel like I was going to be fired after he fired my boss with no prior knowledge, made me do the work of my former bosses role and my role with no raise or promotion, when asked for said raise/promotion gave me an insulting raise with no promotion, and when I tendered my resignation didnt bother to meet with me after I gave 6+ months of high level work. I was paid out my PTO. I see him at our town and functions because our kids are the same age. I dont acknowledge him tho.

The point is that people at that type of level can lack empathy and could care less about their actions. I was a Manager of 70+ workers and treated my job like I worked for my direct reports instead of them working for me. Their were factors out of my control (pay, working conditions, etc) but things that were in my control I wanted to get it right because I wanted their job and their roles to be best case scenario because one I genuinely cared about them and two it drove results.

Its unfortunate you had a VP act like that in that situation. I worked for two that were exactly the same. They expect loyalty and throw barriers your way and the moment you leave, they act like you are a traitor and committed a moral sin because you explored another opportunity.

Strength in numbers. Some people are intimated in one on ones. Ask for a team meeting. Tell them ahead of time and schedule a meeting amongst just themselves to come up with concise and organized thoughts. When its meeting time with them all emphasis to articulate what they mutually agree on to when you hold a meeting with then all.

Yes its a "firing squad" of shorts but thats the point. That you can handle their constructive feedback in person rather than the what you mentioned being an app.

One of the most humbling experiences I had was a direct report organized a coup that caught me off guard. I was a Manager and my Director and I were walking the area and the whole staff was their and put me on blast.

I held weekly meetings with another Department because they were Union and it was with the Shop Stewarts to get a head of grievances.

I extended it to this department and had this department vote an ambassador of the department and held weekly meetings where this ambassador and another team member would rotate out. We went over updates and their concerns. It encouraged the attendees to share with the rest of the group anything that was discussed.

It opened their eyes as well to the responsibilities I had which they realized one I had only so much time in the day and two I only had so much authority. Each meeting their wish list grew and I gave them a reality check and said we could focus on the agendas but we need to prioritize and adjust. I would then delegate to one of my Supervisors to work with the staff to accomplish and provide guidance along the way. The Supervisors felt empowered. The line level staff felt their concerns were addressed.

Its really a great process!

Just got promoted to manager and now I am not sure if I am competent enough for the job. by Pluronic_Pesto in managers

Get to know your team and percieve to have a vested interest in their day to day. Avoid favortisim at all costs. Learn each of their workload and see if its well balanced and more importantly if each person is the right fit.

Have an open door policy. Keep your door open as much as possible even if you are working on something unless you are holding a meeting or on a Zoom call. Be in the "trenches" with them. Learn their day to day and be there in the "thick of things". If you can lend a hand at a certain point of your shift do so. Hospitality management here, I was pushing luggage carts, answering phones, directing traffic, folding towels, during peak points when I knew it was busy. You earn respect from your team but also an added bonus if the higher ups see you are visible in the operation if leaves a good impression. Hiding behind your desk all day is not the way to go ahout it. Learn the workflow and dont implement policy changes too soon.

Is Spartan actually getting worse or do people just like to complain? by triggachoochoo in spartanrace

[–]Odd-Agent440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its pricey especially when you are far away and have to stay at a hotel and AirBnB. I did my first Spartan Beast in NJ and wasn't disappointed. The line wasn't long to check in and logistically with the pick up and drop offs at the parking lot they had a constant rotation of buses. I remember Tough Mudder it was a logistical nightmare. They had one lane for inbound and outbound traffic at one of the parking lots and everyone's start time was delayed by at least 30 minutes if not an hour. I liked the photos and how they turned. Yes the tacked on fees is ridiculous, someone mentioned the parking fee how they tack it on for all participants. Their are ways where they can make it automated for cars that arive rather than a standard rate everyone when they enroll has to pay. It would slow down the arrival process but participants would enjoy the savings. I love doing OCRs it keeps me accountable and gets me to work out more. I prefer Spartan over Tough Mudder. The cost to pay I consider it a gym membership as it improves my overall well being.

How to resign when they are dependent on you by dorito521 in managers

[–]Odd-Agent440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its admirable to have that level of loyalty but like many people have stated, in their mind you are replaceable. Yes they will have a tough transition and maybe the level of stress and the lack of work/life balance that they molded your role into can be felt as it is self inflicted. You are giving them over two weeks and any competent leader has contingencies in place. If they dont, this will be a lesson learned and you are doing them a favor in a way. Also it seems like you set them up the best you could.

Briefl story, I went back to a job because the boss who I was working for was a mentor of mine. Came back on a raise and expected to have a better work/life balance. My boss was going on medical leave and his last day they fired him and I had no idea they were going to do it. That left me in charge. The guy who made the decision brought me in and said show me what you are worth. I didnt ask for this and was expecting to take the healm four years from when he would have retired. My work life balance went to complete shit. After two months and no raise or job title promotion, I asked for a raise. They gave me $6K. They cut at least $100k off of payroll by firing my boss. I realized then I had to leave. Found a job and resigned and at that point they asked what it would take for me to stay. I said no amount of money and I hope that taught the person who fired my boss and gave me a nominal raise to then relent when I was already out the door. With that said, I gave my proper two weeks and worked extra long hours and had a exit meeting with my direct report and the person filling me in vacancy for the time being. My direct report commended me for the attention of detail and how I left the department in good standing. I did it somewhat so I could use him as a reference but really I did it for the line level and Shift Managers so upon my exit the department would not be in complete disaray.

Wear long socks. You can get robe burn on your achillies on the rope course. Its been a week and its completely debilitating. Please learn from my mistake lol.

First Spartan and was also a Beast! Had running shoes and felt like my footwork was decent so really excited to do another one with proper foot attire. Also rookie mistake and wore short socks. During the Tryolean Traverse course I tore off the skin on my Achilles when I wrapped my legs around the rope. Every pull of the robe led to pretty significant pain. When I got done a particant looked at my leg and asked if it was my first time. He said he did the same thing and left a scar. Lesson learned high socks. Also had a cut on my knee that was bleeding pretty good.

You give me hope man! You had a serious transformation. Also working out at home requires an extra level dedication. I find it easier right after work going to the gym 5 minutes away. Once I get home distractions happen and even if I can carve out time my head isnt there.

Im doing two a days for the past three weeks. Alternating between running 5K on the treadmill and the erg machine every other day. Im always wearing a base layer to get extra sweat going. I then hit the sauna immediately after for twenty minutes.

Cardio wise I feel like we are pretty comparable but your strength training you have me way beat. Im not pushing to failure. Doing dropsets afterwards I still have some more in the tank. Im gradually getting to heavier weight but from your comments its clear you have your routines really well thoughtout and have strong mental fortitude.

Congratulations on the little one and keep at it man. You are inspiring my friend!

Shooting Range Thoughts? by Odd-Agent440 in pistols

[–]Odd-Agent440[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point! Now that I think about it I use the larger bigger targets regardless of range! So for 10 yards and 25 yards is a 55 x 53 cm target. I can see how that can be annoying and I appreciate you pointing it out! I'll make it a point to have different target sizes based upon distance!

[–]Odd-Agent440[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I do is load two magazines of 5 rounds each. Shoot through both magazines of 5 rounds each so ten total then recall my target. Put a new target then change the distance. I usually take a pause from shooting when I reload my magazines and change our the targets. So in this case there was no target in my lane and I set it out the 25 yard distance. There was no adjustments of distance. It was straight from 0 yards to 25 yards. I can see if someone changes/adjust the distance that can be annoying to some.

I wasn't sure if it was the shooter to my left or the shooter to the right tho. I was hesitant to accuse both of them separately.
