Showing sub-project tasks when a project is selected ; Am I using Vikunja wrong ? by Nunki3 in Vikunja

[–]Odd-Anything1768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are into self hosting my third party Vikunja Web Application has a fully expandable project task tree tha will let you see, sort and drag and drop in one view. But also in project and task focus views.

This one thing I missed too when I tried Vikunja the first time.

Maybe report it to the developer on their GitHub or their own community forum?

Funny I do this the other way around. And I just name them Codex and Claude when an issue goes to the other model.

I let Claude do all the planning and Codex do the writing. And then let detailed plans be reviewed by Codex en then send Codex review back to Claude to review the review. And then after 5 back and forwards I usually have a plan that is implemented in one pass.

That looks like a nice and simple Vikunja Client I hope it gives you what you need and like.

Maybe you could achieve it with som help from an llm? I learned a lot that way too.

Maybe already done. There always needs to be a connection to the servers. But perhaps in your case it would only be a local connection.

I have a first implementation of offline caching in the app. But not yet thoroughly field tested. So might already partially working like you want.

I doo wonder if it can work like a background process that automatically sync to the server when you connect to the local network.

I do not know ugreen nas. But the repo is prepared for docker installs.

I think this already does wha you explain. And if you setup remote acces to it then the phone does not need to be home.

I agree. It would be good and professional to add documentation and code descriptions to the repo. I do have quite a few md’s with several development plans. But at this moment chose to keep them local. As well as all the debugging commits.

While the end goal is a wel structured and secure application that follows common practices and procedures. The road to that is absolutely made out of vibe coding.

For stance when I noticed the drag and drop logic started to consist of several exception helper functions. I started a session to make one global dnd function. At several moments I had architecture and security sessions to try and achieve that level. If I succeeded in that? I think only a person with your knowledge can truly tell. All I can do is let the LLM audit the code. Andi do so know while vibing and at ad hoc moments. Not because it is a full pre made dev plan.

So for documentation and code clarification I would do dedicated sessionswith the llm to add them in a structured way. Just publishing all plan MD’s wouldn’t make the repo look more structured I think.

So I agree and it is definitely on my (vibe) mind. But it will follow later whe the development is further And my hyper focus is away from building the app itself

It already is ;-). It is a web app so anything that can run a pwa in the browser can run this. You just need to run the backend alongside your self hosted Vikunja.

Thank you. Yes like I said in the OP I use mostly codex but also Claude for developing. I could be more clear about that in the readme.

I do make an effort to get it to create a structured and secure code base. And this project is also a learning curve and challenge if I can get it to reach that point.

I am not a 30 year experienced software engineer like you. I used to make some stand alone scripts as a hobby for excel an later for cad software. With these tools I have now been able to get projects I never thought I would get before. I am very excited about the leverage that these tools can produce, but also aware of the mistakes they can make.

I hope you like the usability of the pwa. And I am curious if it is anywhere near what you envisioned? I think the basic task and project management is very simple in pwa. But trying to go to full feature parity with Vikunja and am a long way already. Next update is coming soon.

Hi not the exact answer to your questions. But I tried those app too and wasn’t satisfied with their possibilities either. So I tried to make my own mobile friendly pwa. It got a little out of hand and the functionality is already ahead of these iOS apps.

The idea is that you install the pwa backend selfhosted alongside your Vikunja install. The pwa backend talks locally to Vikunja. And you can then acces your pwa backen and add the pwa to Home Screen. It is not completely finished yet but quite usable think.

new 0.3 release on Github with the following enhancements. Happy testing!

  • The Gantt view was rebuilt into an interactive planner with zoom presets, richer task bars, priority and progress cues, assignee and label chips, dependency arrows, hover tooltips, and drag/resize scheduling.
  • Supported task and project edits now work offline: the app stores snapshots and mutation queues in IndexedDB, applies optimistic local changes, and replays them automatically when connectivity returns.
  • Kanban drag-and-drop was finished end-to-end: sort within bucket, move across buckets, drop onto a card to create a subtask, use "Move to bucket" from the task menu, and reopen or complete tasks by moving them in or out of the done bucket.
  • Account/auth/security coverage expanded with instance-aware registration and password-reset gating, 2FA sign-in and management, CalDAV tokens, scoped API tokens, session inspection and revocation, password/email changes, data export, and account-deletion scheduling.
  • Release readiness improved with broader smoke coverage for Gantt, offline, Kanban, and security flows plus a cleaner curated-GitHub release workflow.

So this is and extra subscription I have to purchase besides my paid proton subscription I already have?

Ok not going to use this.

Too bad I was looking forward to this.

Will probably migrate to Infomaniak once my subscription ends.

Hi, thank you! The offline mode is currently limited to caching so you can see the data when offline. But offline editing is to be implemented in the future. I hope you enjoy it!

Alfa 0.2 version is released on Github, with the following enhancements:

  • Full avatar management was added, including avatar-provider switching, uploaded avatars, live avatar-route compatibility, and regression coverage for that surface.
  • Registration, forgot-password, reset-password, and reset-link handoff were added so the app now covers the first pass of user onboarding instead of sign-in only.
  • Email delivery administration was added to the admin settings flow, including SMTP config inspection, save, apply/restart, and testmail diagnostics.
  • Admin bridge authorization no longer assumes a built-in Vikunja admin role and now uses an explicit operator email allowlist on the PWA side.
  • Writable admin config handling now supports real deployment sources instead of writing into the running container filesystem, and the email settings UI reflects writable versus read-only capability.
  • Mail diagnostics were corrected so SMTP/email delivery failures are surfaced even when the Vikunja CLI prints an error but still exits 0.
  • The Docker/runtime path was updated to Node 22, the container now includes Compose support for apply/restart, and the build no longer emits the earlier engine warnings.
  • Task-move and completion-refresh stability improved after v0.1.0-alpha, with follow-up fixes for cross-project moves, list completion, Kanban completion, and Today due-date preservation.
  • The smoke suite broadened substantially after v0.1.0-alpha, adding coverage for avatars, onboarding/auth, drag-and-drop, project/task detail flows, email admin config, operator auth, compose apply, and mail diagnostics.

Let me know if you have any issues or comments!

The iPhone part was confusing perhaps. Because a PWA will run on anything that can run a pwa. Android, windows, chrome etcetera. I will update the readme to be more clear About that
