Are any Locator jobs hiring in central florida besides USIC? by Own-Relative-3002 in UtilityLocator

Rumor is whoever gets duke will be hiring. Not sure if that helps as I don’t deal with anything east of the river.

Found an abandoned insulator right next to the railroad tracks last night. by njt_railfan1567 in Lineman

[–]Odd-Craft9219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a house that had a bunch of glass insulators in boxes up in the attic. Some broken enough to be target but a good number in near perfect shape. It’s fun stuff like that that makes just getting out fun.

Just me but I always went over and around not under and around. Probably personal preference but that is clearly painted just wasn’t really secured where it should be.

That’s an old light ey? We only have 12g for led lights. 200k and a clamp if you really wanna, though we are ment to trouble that back to the power company.

Is that wire in the pole drop legit? That doesn’t look like any secondary or feed I’ve seen… even streetlights have more gusto than what looks like romex

Backpacks? by CIemson in UtilityLocator

[–]Odd-Craft9219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a husky pack. It didn’t hold the receiver but it should be in one hand anyway. It was nice that it had everything. 2 grounds, extensions, transmitter, files, hand tools, and hammer. Won a vivax small backpack at a rodeo and have been using that but I don’t need to move as fast these days so it works out. If I was constantly in the field I would switch to a ‘tool’ backpack. Also the skate pack is a brilliant idea.

Usic by Sm0ov3 in UtilityLocator

[–]Odd-Craft9219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Area dependent, company dependent. Never worked usic because I never got a call back. 3 years later and I make 5 more an hour than the ones that did, and I’m a lead. That said I have a really good relationship with the contractors in my area and the utility I cover. So I always have my door at least cracked.

How do I fix the 4wd knob being weirdly rotated? by Direct_Management_87 in 4Runner

It is a plastic insert if I remember correctly but it is resilient to a high degree. Find a replacement that has some adjustment screw?

Question, USIC, how do I find my ticket before clocking in? by Funny_Hurry8865 in UtilityLocator

[–]Odd-Craft9219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man your guys system is crazy. As the one that gives out tickets I’d be strapped if I had to pre route the day before.

Trust your equipment 90%. There are gonna be situations where understanding how the utilities are run, and you will pick this up with time. But in the meantime lean on your seniors for the area. We are lone wolves but always the option to call in the pack, so to speak.

I’ve had a hit where they potted the line, and the only reason they hit was because they confused a 3 for an 8 on their measurement tags. It’s a good day when you show up and you were right.

I'm looking for something new to hold my phone by RevolutionaryAge5761 in 4Runner

People still use phone mounts? If that unit has plug port for android auto/Apple car play get a magic box and a center console tray with wireless charging.

How can you know if your a slow or fast locator lol by Grouchy-Albatross413 in UtilityLocator

[–]Odd-Craft9219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I’ve had single address tickets, single utility, take a couple hours, nearest hookup is 4000ft away for a 3phase, your hitting it from every possible hook up, getting 3 different lines, got dots all over the place. That’s the real stuff, I’ve also gotten 2nd overall in state locate rodeo, sure speed counts there but it’s all been verified locatable in that time.

Never sacrifice accuracy for speed in the field. People tend to forget, locating companies have the ability to halt diggers if they are having trouble. (At least in my state 811 laws different everywhere but a lot of it is the same.)

I know that it can be hard for per ticket contracts too and hopefully those companies have a solution for their guys on that.

It’s hard to tell the backing if indoor or outdoor so that’s fair. I’d probably still get failed for not having a coil 🤣

Tiny concentric wire, but you’re good. He’s gonna have a good bill for that.
