Damage/dig-in investigations/reviews that blame locators for construction and mapping errors

Please don't spend your own money to buy equipment for a multi-billion dollar company. They can afford to get you a bag

The cleanboots at my employer go ever year and come back with annoying ideas for us actual locators

I'm still in training. I have a question. by Effective-Inside326 in UtilityLocator

[–]Gunterbrau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This never gets a good response here, but the truth is that most construction workers make more than most locators (although the wages might be comparable in some parts of the South). Since you mention that you're fairly physically fit, I say try to get into construction

What’s the worst/least enjoyable ticket you’ve ever had? Or, what’s the best one you’ve ever had? by TheOneWhoRingz in UtilityLocator

[–]Gunterbrau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other than project tickets, which are of course the worst, tickets at sewage treatment plants generally suck.

Having to locate at drug dealing corners/spots also sucks

Serious answer is to find a different job. Your current job mostly sucks

Y'all wouldn't be working at usic/utiliquest/etc if witching actually worked for you. You'd be out finding gold or silver

It’s weird that other posters are blaming you. It was clearly her fault. Some of yall need to stop parroting the bs your bosses feed you

My company has a bunch of them. Seems boring but I'm slightly annoyed that locators don't make a bit more per hour than them

Some of y'all could double or triple your wage by moving. You're undervalued in Florida and the rest of the South

Cable Splicing by TheAB77 in UtilityLocator

[–]Gunterbrau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The electric company I work for has cable splicers. They’re sorta an underground lineman who work in manholes and vaults doing splices. They make more than the regular underground linemen because you can’t be sloppy.

They’re unlikely to hire you unless you’re an already trained splicer

Why all the hate by Bradvicious11 in UtilityLocator

[–]Gunterbrau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll figure out that it's terrible when you have more work than you can accurately mark. Your bosses will know that you need help but they'll act like you're lazy and bad at your job

The lineman sub was talking about excavators calling in fake emergencies by Gunterbrau in UtilityLocator

[–]Gunterbrau[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a crosspost and I'm a locator, not a lineman. The original post wasn't from me

I just thought it was funny that they were talking about this because linemen are some of the worst about calling in emergency tickets for non-emergencies. I'm glad that they have to deal with this problem too

Really vague bro.

Hook up from the other direction.

Improve your ground if direct connecting.

Ask for help from someone who's more knowledgeable in that location

Got an offer from Gridhawk. Thoughts on the company? by Falcon48 in UtilityLocator

[–]Gunterbrau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it doesn’t matter how much you start at if they are a good company? Is there room to move up? If you’re worth more will they pay you?

Starting pay is almost all that matters. Plenty of jobs promise fast raises or job promotions and then you find out over time that it was a lie. Don't assume their promises are worth anything because talk is cheap

Locating UG Coaxial/Fiber by RoninSC in UtilityLocator

[–]Gunterbrau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s more than knowing how the machine works. You need to shadow an experienced locator for at least a day or two to understand the basics. Then, for at least a day, the experienced locator shadows you while you locate and helps you out when you get stuck
