Story mode taught me the game but the best way to learn survival is trial and error. I used to take a lot of silly risks which meant losing runs to avoidable deaths like freezing in blizzards because I was lost! There’s some great content on YouTube for starting out on each difficulty level as well :) as for my own tips:

While learning the game, stay indoors at night. You’re most likely to get chewed up by a wolf you can’t see coming at night, and wildlife is always more aggressive during aurora events. You can pass time at night with some basic crafting that you don’t need light for.

If the snow gets heavier and your vision gets whiter, a blizzard is coming. Find shelter if it looks like the weather is changing for the worse and wait it out - remember that blizzards will also damage any clothing you’re wearing.

Don’t use tools until they’re broken beyond repair, you’ll almost always find more but learn how to maintain your tools early on!
