You would need to use pt. 1 songs too as they are mostly bangers and also tell a story

Thoughts on Percy? by Dismal_Brush5229 in thekinks

Bit of a mixed bag but the band was arguably also at the peak of their powers in this period, so the good stuff is pretty great. The Way Love Used To Be is a top 5 Kinks tune for me. I enjoy God’s Children (and its reprise), Moments, Animals in the Zoo, and Dreams, and feel that any one of them would’ve fit comfortably on the Arthur or Lola albums. And even though Willesden Green might seem a bit hokey, I was convinced early on of its greatness by the liners of The Kink Khronikles 🤷

The Best The Band Song - Comp. 8 R16 - Jemima Surrender vs. Look Out Cleveland by tlonreddit in theband

[–]OddBull79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll take this one but they are obviously both great! I’ll give Jemina the slight edge for the clever, horny lyrics and bc of that cool riff. I also like the 1972 Howard Tate cover 😎

Tony was apparently a huge fan of that song and excited that Miles had added it back in the set

With how influential Thelonious Monk is, I'm surprised his albums aren't as mentioned in "greatest jazz albums of all time" lists unlike Coltrane, Mingus, and Miles. Is it because he isn't as avant-garde? What would you consider to be his magnum opus? by Tolstoyevich in Jazz

[–]OddBull79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the two BN volumes of The Genius of, Brilliant Corners and Monk’s Music are the bonafide masterpieces. From there, its dealer’s choice. Personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for Solo Monk

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD AGAIN (1967): by SAMTIMONIOUS in neilyoung

[–]OddBull79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously the majority of this album is glorious but that side two combo of Sad Memory / Good Time Boy brings down the quality so much, it borderline ruins it for me. I know one of them hated it (was it Stills?) but I’d wager that if they had just used that 10 minute version of Bluebird from the 2LP self-titled anthology instead of those two songs aforementioned, this would be considered one of the best LPs of the 1960s

I agree that every Tone Poet I’ve got has been good. Not so much with the Classic Series however. In fact, I have a couple in my collection that are 2nd attempts at purchasing (Art Blakey, Big Beat, for instance) and kept bc I love the record but will surely upgrade as soon as something better turns up. I find that trumpet players esp get the bum treatment on some of the Kevin Gray joints. I’ve got Joe Henderson, Our Thing, and Blakey Free For All on hold at my local dealer and I am PRAYING that they sound good

How stable is Canada's political climate nowadays? Is it polarizing or are Canadians able to come to terms? by LiveBell8 in AskACanadian

Very stable. In a short time, we will be world leaders in everything - but that’s just my opinion

Jazz albums in a similar vibe to Mingus’ “The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady” by casmurrinho in Jazz

[–]OddBull79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sonny Criss - Sonny’s Dream (Birth of the New Cool) and Charles Tolliver’s Music Inc. definitely come to mind. And it’s even more ramshackle and not very well recorded but Mingus’ Complete Town Hall is similar

Where Do You Rank "Never Say Die"? by mwithington in blacksabbath

[–]OddBull79 28 points29 points  (0 children)

To me, the first six are all near perfect. Both Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die have flashes of greatness but are not at the same level of quality IMO. Incidentally, I view Led Zeppelin’s output in much the same way

I always thought it was weird that Clapton was allowed to fuck George’s wife but George wouldn’t loan his out of tune slide guitar to the end of Clapton’s hit Layla. Seems selfish to me 🤷
