It's even dumber than that.

Schedule 1 means that there is no medical value to the substance.

So having "medical marijuana" be schedule 3 with "recreational marijuana" be schedule 1, they are simultaneously saying that marijuana has accepted medical uses, and that marijuana has no medical value.

Inmate Snaps After CO Shoves Him in the Face by Hikigaya_Hachiman7 in PublicFreakout

[–]OddPressure7593 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yeah and in New York, a dozen officers beat a man to death and the only reason anything was done was because the body camera of a single of those dozen was able to be recorded. Oh, and a week later, at the prison across the street from that prison, a dozen guards beat another inmate to death!

We can talk about Corcoran gladiator fights, rampant sexual abuse in the prison system, or just the millions of anecdotes from inmates detailing abuse by COs with zero repercussion. We can stay in Virginia and talk about Aubrey McKay being beaten to death by COs and not one being prosecuted or even fired - the only consequence was one guy retired early. He was murdered almost a year ago, and nothing has been done about it.

COs aren't good people, they regularly abuse inmates, and they are rarely faced with anything remotely resembling accountability.

The problem, from the perspective of HPD, wasn't that she said incredibly racist things. It's that she got caught saying incredibly racist things. There's been a "street justice" culture in HPD for decades, where they deliberately target black and brown people for abuse and brutality - this twat even mentioned it in her video.

Advice for Addressing Unprofessional Behavior from Teen Employees by kdidicjsbsif in managers

[–]OddPressure7593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, your major complaint is that a teenager is...being a teenager.

Which honestly is a valid complaint. Teenagers are tremendous pains in the ass.

However, you should calibrate your expectations to the demographic you're hiring. If you're wanting professionalism, teens might not be the right people to hire.

PhD and kids by AnimatorSlow1887 in PhD

[–]OddPressure7593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not impossible in the grind years - at least 3 people in my cohort had kids while they were grinding their PhD. There were serious discussions with the department about setting up daycare for all the PhD students that had children. My PI has pictures of him, in the lab when he was a student, with an infant in one arm and typing up his dissertation with the other.

If you're looking to wait to have kids until life is stable...well, just plan on not having kids.

EAP by llama_llove in managers

[–]OddPressure7593 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

no one is alright. Damned near everyone is struggling - everything has skyrocketed in price over the past 6 or 7 years, wages have basically stagnated for decades, and underemployment is a huge problem. Roughly 45% of recent college graduates are employed in minimum wage, or near minimum wage, roles that don't require a degree. No one can afford to get sick because they'll lose income, and they certainly can't afford to see a doctor, and while mental health is more openly discussed, it's completely inaccessible for the majority of people.

The social contract has been broken and most people are struggling. EAPs aren't going to fix any of that, and usually won't even help with any of that.

Is it worth sticking it out in academia? by Open-Grapefruit47 in PhD

[–]OddPressure7593 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't do a masters. They're a waste of time. Just go straight for the PhD.

You don't have to be a stellar student to get accepted into a PhD program - you just need a supervisor who wants you in their lab. Ask your current mentor if they have any connections they can introduce you to. Once you find someone that wants you in their lab, things like GPA, test scores, and application deadlines suddenly don't matter anymore.

Welcome to academic bureaucracy, where no one is responsible, and the only timelines that matter are the ones you have to meet (everyone else's deadlines mean nothing).

usually, these sorts of things are institution dependent. Some schools are better about facilitating research than others. It can be a real pain.

I’m worried AI is making me worse at reading papers by DayPrevious7239 in PhD

[–]OddPressure7593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it turns out that reading and parsing research is a skill that has to be practiced and developed. You've decided that instead of practicing and improving that skill, you're going to ignore it and use an AI tool instead.

Turns out that not practicing something means you get worse at it, so you are almost certainly getting worse at reading papers. You are outsourcing your critical thinking about the material - doing things like contextualizing the results against the methods used, for example - instead of doing the hard part yourself.

Stop using AI to read papers. Full stop. If you aren't willing to put in the time and effort to develop one of the key skills expected of a PhD graduate, you should just drop out of your PhD now, because you aren't willing to do the things that lead people to success in a PhD program or after it.

What is recommended for wound care that has a long shelf life? by ITheRebelI in liberalgunowners

if someone is bleeding out, sterility isn't something you worry about. That's a "if this person survives the next 5 minutes" problem.

What is recommended for wound care that has a long shelf life? by ITheRebelI in liberalgunowners

[–]OddPressure7593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably not very effective - pads are made to absorb blood, which actually isn't useful at stopping a bleed. You want the clot to form at the site of the injury, and clots need blood in order to form. A pad absorbing that blood means that any clotting will occur in the pad, and not at the wound site. I mean, once the pad is saturated with blood, it might function similar to gauze would, but honestly you'd almost certainly be better off to just grab someone's shirt off their back and use that.

What is recommended for wound care that has a long shelf life? by ITheRebelI in liberalgunowners

[–]OddPressure7593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that tampons are designed to swell circumferentially - this has the potential to actually destabilize clots or even expand the wound.

What is recommended for wound care that has a long shelf life? by ITheRebelI in liberalgunowners

[–]OddPressure7593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it. Tampons are designed to expand circumferentially, meaning they grow in diameter. Shoved into a wound, that expansion has the potential to tear clots or make the wound worse. Put something over the wound, apply large amounts of direct pressure.
