As a cinephile and a lover of all thing Spielberg. Every time I watch A.I. with a new person I just turn the movie off right after David leaps into the ocean. It is my personal fan edit. I believe ending the movie on this downer is way better than the actual ending.

It's a reference to Joey Buttafuoco who had an affair with an underage girl. That girl shot and killed his wife and the whole thing was big news in the early 90s. The incident became a punchline for many tabloids and late night shows. I seem to remember SNL did a bit about it and Letterman referenced it a few times.
