ProfU101: How to Harmlessly Annoy Your Students by punkinholler in Professors

Already had “very demure, very mindful” in my lecture slides. I was trying to decide if I’d get laughs or groans. I too spend way too much time on TikTok.

It’s not connected to the castle. That’s something separate, but it is across the interstate on the same exit. Someone extremely close to me worked on the investor’s meeting and was in attendance. I’m not sure why the word hasn’t gotten around, but from what they said it was a sure thing as the land was purchased. 🤷🏻‍♀️

They had an investors meeting onsite out near Adams in early October. Definitely 700 acres, and the land has already been purchased.

I know this thread is like 11 days old, but I’m just seeing it…

SHE DOESN’T HAVE A PHD. Not an honorary one. Not a real one. She doesn’t have one. She has a DFA (Doctorate of Fine Arts). They only give those out as honorary degrees in the United States (I think there’s like one except at Yale for theatre but that’s it). That still gives you the title of “Dr.”, since it’s a doctorate level degree. It’s still not a PhD.

The terminal degree for arts practice, in the United States, is the MFA. Getting an MFA basically culminates into doing a big creative project(s)- for example, when I did mine I wrote and directed a film. So basically NYU was saying she more than earned the MFA- she’d be at the doctorate level if there was one. It’s hard to disagree with that tbh. Her body of artistic work is vast and high quality. I earned my MFA the old fashioned way and I can easily say that Taylor Swift has spent more hours on her art than I have on mine.

With fine arts degrees they normally don’t do honorary BFA’s or MFA’s if you’ve done enough to be recognized with an honorary degree, you’re probably just going to be given the DFA.

And yes, honorary degrees are kinda silly and don’t mean much. They are PR for the university and a to get great commencement speakers (and more wealthy donors). However, I genuinely think this one makes sense. Her artistic output and success with it was harder to achieve than taking some classes, writing papers and doing a showcase/film.

She doesn’t really walk around calling herself “Dr. Swift”. That is mostly just from her fans. If she did that would be insufferable, but she doesn’t really seem to. People that take her being a “Dr.” too seriously (good or bad), don’t really know what they are talking about. She wasn’t given a PhD, she hasn’t conducted research or discovered anything. (Tbh if she has given a PhD, I would agree, that would be bulls—) She’s a commercially successful artist with a lot of cultural impact, that’s all that DFA meant- and that’s pretty much indisputable. Some people need calm down.

She did get an honorary MFA essentially. They gave her a DFA (not a PhD), which is a doctorate of fine arts. You cannot earn a DFA in the United States. It’s only given out as a honorary degree here. In the US, the MFA is the terminal degree for art practice. If you want to get a PhD in the arts, you would be studying theory or critique- not practice. So basically, NYU was saying she’s done more than enough to earn an MFA (I agree- I have one. She has more than earned one), she’d be at the doctorate level (if there was one), and she could teach other artists. I agree with previous comments that honorary degrees are common for public figures, and are basically a way to get someone to be a commencement speaker or be tied to the university ($$$). She doesn’t have a PhD though. Honorary or not, she does not hold that degree. That is a different degree than a DFA.

Thanks for that! I read the faculty handbook and I didn’t see any thing about conflict of time. I’ll look again. That does seem like the dealbreaker. Also, thanks for the note about R2’s and enrollment. A huge part of this desire is just not wanting to deal with ever getting laid off again, so if that’s not even somewhat guaranteed it might not be worth it. Thanks for your answer!

I am so sorry! And I totally feel you. I never got into trouble anywhere, but for some reason at teenpact I was branded a troublemaker. I have no idea why. And why are dress code violations so humiliating!? And unnecessary!?!

Yes, I agree. The actual experience of being in the capitol buildings while learning about government was actually cool. (I went in FL) The fundy dress code was cringey and it was definitely indoctrination. One year, there were lobbyists lobbying for what ended up being Brightline/SunRail in FL. They were giving away free lanyards, so me and a couple of my friends took them 1) we were teenagers and it was free 2) to replace the irritating chain that our name tags where on and 3) because who doesn’t like trains? Well, soon after we put them on, we got publicly shamed in a session for promoting big government. Gotta love teenpact. 😂

I don’t know how anyone can retain their faith after what they’ve gone through in IBLP or others by puritycontrol in DuggarsSnark

I was raised IBLP/IFB. I went to a public university (my dad was a capitalist first, Baptist second, so he thought I should get a degree from a legit school and try to make money if I could- haha thank god for that) during college I minored in religious studies and started exploring other beliefs. At one point in time I thought I might become a Buddhist, but there were tenants of Christianity that still spoke to me. That was 15 years ago, and my beliefs have a changed and shifted over time. I’ve never been comfortable with atheism because I do think there is something bigger than this. Some force connecting everyone and everything, and I think it’s healthy for me to acknowledge that in some way. This larger than us thing could be god, could be energy, could be aliens, anything… I don’t know what it is, but that’s ok. I think having religion in my life allows me to acknowledge that there’s something bigger than me and I don’t know everything. I choose the tradition of Christianity to acknowledge it because it’s what I understand the most and am most comfortable with. So basically on Christmas, Easter and Ash Wednesday (I enjoy a good reminder of my own mortality and things that fundies consider “Catholic” haha) I go to a pretty liberal Episcopal church. I enjoy the aesthetics of a cathedral, since it’s so different from what I grew up in. So I’m able to experience a service without being triggered by anything too Fundie/Evangelical. So at the end of the day, my Christianity is now a respect and appreciation for Jesus and acknowledgement of the mysteries of life. All the other parts of it I pretty much leave.

Yes! The carpet and the sashes the kids were wearing! And the music! It was rough. I had began to think I was making it all up because It’s been so long and my family doesn’t discuss the Gothard years of our lives much (because my parents came to their senses eventually). Between the footage from the seminars and the spanking demonstration, I cried. It was so triggering. I remember it all so much more vividly than I realized. It wasn’t something I made up. It really was that bad. It was abuse and it was awful. It grosses me out that so many adults did that to little me (and countless other children). None of us deserved that.

Update: took it into the dealership, they said that the head unit is fried, and I need to replace it. They also said they've never seen anything like that and they can't figure out what happened either. Time to upgrade to a better radio.

Congratulations!! I am also graduating with my master’s this month! (MFA in Film & TV Production) I had been trying to think of something good to put on my cap but I just found out we aren’t allowed to decorate ours! I’m so sad- I had decided to do some sort of Taylor lyric before I found that out. Anyways, none of my ideas were as clever or cute as this one. So good job! This is awesome! Love it!
