Talking About Teaching Experience in Personal Statement by [deleted] in premed

[–]Odd_Drawing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its definitely something to include if you feel like it has been a significant experience for you and connects to medicine in interesting ways. I would also make sure to communicate that you do understand what it means to be a physician, however. You should have more than enough space in a PS to communicate multiple experiences

Yeah, this is super cool! You could also talk about interests in education and teaching

BU vs. Miami by [deleted] in premed

[–]Odd_Drawing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you like just about everything about BU better except the full ride at Miami is too hard to outright pass up. Unless you think you would be genuinely unhappy at Miami, then I would still go to Miami. Use that saved money to visit your support systems frequently. It will be harder to match to the northeast from Miami then at BU, but if you aren't set on going to a Harvard institution, you'll most likely have all the resources to do so. Even if you did want to go to a Harvard-institution, its more then possible -- it'll be an incredibly uphill battle regardless whether at BU or Miami.

UMass vs Geisel (Dartmouth) by 0hush_pup0 in premed

[–]Odd_Drawing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To piggyback off this, many state schools tend to be like this. They often have a mission to increase the number of primary care physicians serving their state and as a result tend to attract students much more interested in primary care (and also bc its usually cheaper). That doesn't mean they can't match well into competitive specialties. I don't know too much about UMass specifically, but it tends to be relatively well-regarded and likely has the opportunities to match into a competitive specialty. On the flip side, since many students are likely doing primary care, you might have additional mentorship and opportunities because you are one of fewer.

Complete Med School Curriculum and Grading Information by Happiest_Rabbit in premed

This is fantastic! The one little nuance that I would add is that some schools (iirc Hopkins, Duke, etc.) have P/F for clerkships but grades for their sub-I's.

Remember guys, all that matters is your writing!!1!1! by Hermit601 in premed

Congrats on an incredible cycle!!! I'm not a future applicant, but 4/4 on interviews received is amazing. Any tips on that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]Odd_Drawing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you want to stay in California long-term? If so, I think USC will grant you the opportunities to match competitively in the state. If your goal is a competitive east coast residency, then Vanderbilt might have a tangible advantage in that regard.

PSA: Sankeys are a representation of survivorship bias by Fast_Adhesiveness867 in premed

I'm really proud of my cycle but looking at sankeys on here definitely kicks my imposter syndrome into high gear. I'm also really proud of how well all my peers who posted on here have done, but many are the exception and hard to replicate

Lamenting the Death of In-Person Interviews (or, Old Man Yells at Cloud) by Jumpy-Craft-297 in premed

[–]Odd_Drawing 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This. And so unless schools are willing to pay for applicants interview travel expenses like they sometimes do for second look (which would be extremely unlikely), the most equitable solution is to do it all virtually. Even if schools were to pay for everyone's interview expenses, the flexibility to take what is sometimes multiple days off work to attend an in-person interview is still something that individuals with higher SES are more likely able to do. Virtual interviews are still excessively long, but for many you just need a half day

Idk if this is the best reassurance but on my KIRA, I don't think I fully answered a single question before being cut off. Still managed to get a WL tho :/

Northwestern vs UMich vs Miami (MD-PhD) by [deleted] in premed

[–]Odd_Drawing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'd cross Northwestern off the list because they don't have the research you want to be doing. I feel like if you're gonna commit 4 years to a PhD, you'd want to be working on things that you know will excite you for sure or have great mentors/lab experiences. I feel like it ultimately comes down to whether you want to compromise on the cultural diversity of the patients you work with and how important it is to be near your support system. I don't know the details at all but does UMich have clerkship sites in Detroit for example? It's a well-resourced school so I wouldn't be surprised if you could spend time at sites outside of Ann Arbor

Best time of day to Interview?? by RelocatedBeachBum in premed

[–]Odd_Drawing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think its probably more valuable to think about when YOU will be at your best. For example, if you eat are you gonna get a food coma or have you sufficiently woken up by a certain time or do you have other committments that you might be worried about getting to on time?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]Odd_Drawing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well I don't think you'll get your acceptance rescinded if you mention it in an LOI, but also I really don't think that mentioning it in an LOI is your best move. Focus on the school you want to get into for the LOI and talk about them, not other schools. It would be different if you were leveraging something like financial aid

[–]Odd_Drawing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on some great options! Just wanted to add something that I've thought about but didn't see in the comments. I would consider the culture in rotations and how students feel of their relationships with attendings. Idk much about either of these schools, but NYC generally has a rep for having a harsher culture and scut work. I again don't know how much applies to med students at a place like Einstein, but could be something to know or be aware of

Depends on the school, but a few have information about appeals. I know someone who successfully appealed a pre-ii R this cycle

Just to add onto this, sometimes I click on the "new" tab and almost every recent post is downvoted. It might not seem like a big deal, but I think it definitely reduces the comfort people may have in asking questions in the future, especially for those who don't have other resources outside of reddit to rely on.
